This production did not focus on fancy sets but on comedic timing and musicality. Even the minor roles were strongly played. Who could take their eyes off Mattei's Figaro even when he was not in the spotlight. Beautiful DiDonato, used the full range of facial expression evoking laughter, then tears, then passion and laughter again. Florez, amidst this tough competition, sang his heart like a nightingale in love.

It was an absolutely fabulous idea to show opera from Metropolitan in HD. The cast, the voices, the presentation -- unbelievable. In my area there was just a hand full of elderly viewers, and the lights did not come back after the show (I am afraid, the mechanic has left before the end of the show). It seems that there is not going to be any more events of this kind, as it doesn't look like a profitable venture. What a shame! Maybe, the idea needed to be better advertised and explained to the public. I cannot believe there would be not enough people to fill the theater in Baltimore area, where the opera company just went bankrupt: the HD Live from Met sounds like an inexpensive alternative.

While Met Productions are always wonderful with great singing and production values, this transmission was disappointing. The sound system was set too high making the opening notes of the overture painful. The lighting fluctuated so at times singers were in the dark. There was no standard intermission break between acts so when I came back from the rest room I found I had missed the opening of the 2nd act. There also were no informative between act interviews that I so appreciate in Met broadcasts.

Barber was utterly delightful. All of the singers seemed to be having a wonderful time -- which was transmitted to the audience. The singing was wonderful. All hail Bartlett Sher for a fabulous production and of course Rossini for composing this triumph.
