Lars von Trier is a fascinating director. Antichrist is an unusual exploration of where the ultimate depths of unforgiveness can lead. This film is absolutely not for everybody! Director von Trier does not shrink from what he wants to show us .... but most in the audience will. If you can get past the shock of some of this movie you will find a message of "how not to live ... how not to love ..... and how not to hold on to grief, pain, despair, anger, resentment, hate, jealousy .... and, especially, unforgiveness. There is little middle ground for this one. I thought it was an amazing film, often hard to watch, creatively & visually stunning with an underlying current about love and the abandonment of love.

Starting with the positive, the cinematography is new and interesting, especially the forest scenes. The acting is flat - almost cardboard. Once in the movie Dafoe shows emotion. Gainsbourg bounces between stark raving mad and manic depressive - with hardly a personality between.
The rest of this mess stands on its close-up sexuality and violence. The "study" of misogyny, which it pretends to, ends with a scene of a half-baked excuse for killing. To further confuse that, we have nude people, mostly women, oddly clothed in the final scene, haunting the forest, and guess who lumbering off.
Give von Trier credit for showing us that a forest ("nature") - often Disneyfied as idyllic - can be a sad if not deeply disturbing place.

It is Bruegel and Bosch and Bacon and Memling engulfed in evil and depravity, blood, guts and sin. It is Manichean cosmogony of pain and tortured apocrypha enveloped in surreal photography- pure rhythm of light and dark and despair. A must see!

While the film should probably not be classified as "horror," Antichrist is the most terrifying, well-crafted film to hit theatres in years. Watch it twice. Every shot has been contemplated. Every scene tweaks an emotional chord.
Is it gory? Yes. Is it graphic? Yes. But the film is ultimately about psychology and evil. Von Trier has captured this perfectly; Antichrist falls next to Begotten and Clean Shaven as truly evil cinema.
PS_Not a date movie.

It's hard to believe that with such great acting provided by Willem Defoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg and excellent cinematography that a movie could be so bad. The story left so many unanswered questions and seemingly unrelated events and references. The "shock" scenes seemed to be inserted for the sole purpose of waking up the audience from the dragging story line. It could have been so much better had more focus been placed on the story rather then going for cheap shock value.

Even though the acting was amazing, the cinematography beautiful, and you could see a master director at work, the story line was extremely weak and purposeless. He tried to shock for shock-value and I kept feeling that he really didn't have anything to say and that he was desperately trying to find it through the movie. The movie portrayed women as the antichrist and that they really deserved to die when thousands of them were killed as witches. This woman was portrayed as modern-day witch. You can be a misogynist but you don't have to make movies that show that. I was extremely disappointed by my favorite director.
