The Rowley character was really great and showed what it meant to be confident in being your own person. There were some pretty comical scenes with lessons about friendship and making your mark.
I went with my family but given that we're all over the age of 18, the lessons and comedic connection was a bit lost on us. However, I definitely recommend parents and school aged children to see it!

A story of a town full of children who are a gaggle of mean spirited bullies in a middle school so chaotic it resembles a nut house. It was a sad mess and made me depressed thinking my kid, or anyone's kids could get so lost in power struggles, abuse, or exist in a culture full of such pointless shallow values. Not harmless empty calories either... given the disturbing amounts of bullying going on at schools across the country.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I took my daughter and her two BFFs to see it for her 10th birthday. At one time one of the girls just looked up and stared at me because I was laughing so hard. Neither I or my daughter have read the books, but the movie was GREAT.

I personally have not read any of Jeff Kinney's books but my son has, and he is the reason we went to see this movie. He and I both enjoyed this well written comedy. The movie had a great plot with good lessons on interpersonal relationships. Any fans of the book will enjoy the movie and it has enough material to keep the parents intrested in the story line.

This movie was a delightful departure from the many, many "kids" movies that I have seen over the last 10 years. True to the book (according to my 8 & 10 year olds). It brought back many humorous memories from that awkward time of life known as middle school. After the movie we talked about the charecters and discussed the value of being true to yourself instead of trying to please others. I left the theater satisfied and entertained for the 1st time in long while.

Good job in bringing the book to life on film. The casting was spot on. What small changes they made (adding a character that wasn't in the book, for instance) were good calls that enhanced the story instead of detracting from it. Fans of the book should be satisfied.

This movie was a perfectly timed lesson in life for my daughter (5th grade) going into middle school next year. After the movie we talked about the pressures of growing up, multiple teachers, people she has never met, changes in her "circle of friends", and life in general. I can recommend it for that reason.
It was well written an acted, although a little different from the book. The changes were just what Hollywood always does to a written work, amalgamate characters into a single actor. Simplify to fit into 2 hours. Emphasize action over character development. Still the essence of the Wimpy Kid's life was there for myself, and more importantly for my 10 year old daughter.
Go see this with your kid, have a pizza and talk about middle school.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A great way to turn a book into a movie. It's not one of those movies where you watch it again and again, but it was a great movie.
The only problem is that one or two jokes were extremely childish, and causes a slight akward moment between kids and grownups.
Great movie anyway and deserves every star!

My kids ages 10,8, and 7 thought the movie was just okay, nothing to shout about.
For some adults it can be brutal, my daughter had to nudge me a couple of times and I found myself disliking the wimpy kid and rooting for the best friend instead. The father was a total doof ball, the mom clueless and older brother made me sick. DVD rental? uh no

My husband and I took 12 nine year old boys to see this movie for my son's birthday. Most of the boys have read the books several times and were super excited to see the movie. The boys loved the movie! My husband and I thought that the movie was funny, but were disappointed that a magazine with a half-naked woman on the cover stole a few scenes. Why does Hollywood feel the need to ruin an otherwise wholesome movie, with a nod to porn?! The only time the theater was quite of laughter were during these scenes...what a shame.

My son (9.5) loves Diary of a Wimpy kid books and the movie lived up to his expectations. My daughter (7) who has not read the books loved it as well! We all laughed throughout the movie.
I even took my mother and she liked it as well.
But a warning to the parents...if you can not remember how to laugh at gross boy humor then don't try to rate or review this movie...It is about boys and the things they do on a daily basis!
ENJOY!!!!

This movie was unrelentingly depressing with a crazy view of how people are (and middle schoolers really are people--but not like these characters). Mostly the movie is about bullying and being bullied. When it's not, then it's about how superficial and selfish "friends" can be. If I could "un-see" this movie I would.

My 8 y/o son has read all 3 books twice and has the 4th, a do-it-yourself version, nearly completed, and LOVED them all. So to say he was anxiously awaiting this film would be the understatement of the month.
I am not that familiar with them so when I say we both oohed, aahed, laughed and grunted at all the same things, take that as testament to just how good this film really is.
It was well directed, nicely shot, cast perfectly, terrifically acted, and cohesive throughout (a rare thing in "kid flicks"). And it carried a brilliant message in a palatable form!! What more could you ask?
Take your kids and RUN to this movie!!!!
PS for the parents - It's not in 3D, which I honestly find a distraction, so not only did I enjoy it more because of this, but my son is a 3D freak, and even he didn't mind...

My husband and I took our 8y/o son to see this movie. Our son is a huge fan of the books and had an advantage as to the story line over us, but we enjoyed the movie more than he did. It has some very funny parts (lol funny!!) and some very poignant thoughts on how truly awful middles school can be. Smaller children may not get the humor, but it is a good movie for kids 8 and up or those familiar with the books
