The problem with this film is total lack of hope. Though the early scenes ( of fresh faced extraordinarily polite youngsters in tailored gray sweaters & pinafores) were a delight to see, and made me want to rush to the nearest overly -priced Bergdorf -Goodman department store, the story begins its never-ending tumble into total despair. Unlike a novel, in which the author can capture some hopeful passions if he is to redeem his work and acquire readers, a movie should show some future hope for @ least one character in order not to drag the audience into utter despair & really come across as a bad film. If the director must veer from the novel, he should. I understand the premise - this was a film based on the Japanese idea of heroism in the acceptance of one's fate. But, the problem with that premise in this film is that none of the characters are truly heroic. We see no triumph of - or - fight in the human (albeit cloned) spirit. All characters are merely a bunch of lab rats who apathetically accept their fate in despair. I would NOT reccommend this film to anyone, except my in-laws (and the last salesgirl who was very nasty to me - LOL!!)
No, I do not recommend this movie.

There's something amiss from the start in this world where kids are bred to be organ donors. But, love does not conquer all here, and the harsh realities of this world decree that the main characters donate organs until they die, or as they refer to it "complete." This is a lot to swallow. The acting is super and the story is intriguing, so see it if you're in the market for more than the standard, formulaic Hollywood movie. Otherwise, it may be a bit much for your taste..
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I liked the movie and thought that overall it was well acted - Keira Knightly's character seemed to have a big shift that was hard to digest. Those who (whom?) I saw the movie with could not get over the plot points not addressed in either the book or the movie so for them I think it was frustrating. It did not bother me as much as it did them. I think the movie would be more satisfying if it got a bit more into the character's heads and thought processes. Other than the plot issue (or non-issue, depending on personal taste) it was a good film. It is, however, very bleak and depressing so if you don't like that kind of movie, you will not like this one. Carey Mulligan was the best part of the movie. Glad I saw it. Can definately tell it was written by the same guy who wrote "Remains of the Day". Themes of personal resignation without much fight to one's lot in life, sacrifice without reward, etc. The stylized sets and costumes were almost overdone and made it cartoonish rather than surrealistic. Still, again, I liked it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Brilliant, beautiful, and quietly devastating. The acting was across the board great too, even the kids. Totally recommended.

I went to see this film on the first night it showed in NYC. My date was very eager to see the film as she loved the book. I am not a big reader (I usually wait for the movie) but I was interested in the film from the trailors and the film festival buzz. Plus I find Carrey Mulligan a very enticing young actor and was excited to see how she would follow up her stunning perfomrance in The Education.
As we were seated and waiting for the film to commence I overheard someone say that they saw Carey Mulligan in line at the box office buying a ticket to the movie. A few minutes later Carey surpirsingly appeared in the front of the theater and thanked us all for coming. She said she likes to buy a ticket to her movies on the first night in an attempt to bump up the box office sales. She also admitted that she is very proud of this film and that it's not science fiction - it's a love story.
I got the feeling that the last part of her speech was intended to address some of the reviews. In the end I was glad she said what she did because it helped me appreciate the film on several levels. It was astonishing to see her at the theater. She looked adorable and was quite endearing.
The film itself was not as cute as Carey but rather intense and disturbing. I knew very little of what it was about going in and found myself horrifed by the mid-point of the film.
This is not to say that it is not a decent film. Actually I believe it to be elegantly directed and superbly acted. The story is told with gentle simplicity and all of the actors dig deep into the realm of humanity. But the subject matter, cloning people to be organ donors, struck a nerve with me and I almost found had to walk out during the film. Thanks in part to the humanithy the actors brought to their characters and the film's heavy tone of reality, I found it more and more unsettling as the story progressed.
As difficult as it was for me to sit though, I believe that films are meant to unsettle us and to provoke strong reactions as this one did for me. The film is a powerful exploration of the human spirit and manages to achieve a rare cinematic balance between entertainment, inspiration and hope. I highly recommend it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Excellent performances and fidelity to the book make this a standout movie. This is a powerful allegory about what happens when we consider some people less human than others. There is just enough deviation from the book to provide a high impact cinematic experience. The direction is moody with a slight tone of disorientation and discomfort as is fitting the theme.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
