This is a very beautiful movie if you are willing to succumb to its charms. Fans of Jane Campion should enjoy this film very much, though it certainly wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.

Beautifully filmed but a really boring story that didn't get you into Keat's brilliance. I looked around, 80% chicks at the flick and 20% bored guys

Campion does a terrific job with the bucolic atmosphere and hints of repressed sexuality. The performances are, across the board, exceptional, with even the heroine's mother and younger siblings portraying their characters with remarkable subtlety and nuance. But too languorous for too long, and could have done with less poetry recitation and more social context. (the relationship appears to develop in an odd vacuum)
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Moments in this movie were exceptional. Depicting people of intelligence utilizing creative energies before the electronic age was captivating as was the watchful & loving presence of Fanny's siblings. I am a period piece enthusiast yet within this genre I still wish to be entertained & find a little escapism. I have no desire to cry myself silly the last moments of a movie to then see a few words on the screen in wrap up. Nor did I enjoy Keats' in & out of Fanny's life with little transition or illustrative rationale. All in all the movie felt a little too full of itself with the arguably beautiful set & scenic shots. It should have focused more fully on a robust story narrative which would make me want to think about it later.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This film should get a wide release. There are lots of women who would love to see it, but will not get a chance to because it will not reach their cities.
I have a penchant for period films and classic literature, so it was perfect for me. The photography was absolutely beautiful too.

Oh indeed, the filming was gorgeous. The pretty fields, flowers, pretty costumes, beautiful interiors - 5 stars. The movie? not so much. If you love poetry and specifically this guys poetry then you might like it a lot. I love movies that take place during other periods and never miss the ones that come on pbs. I just could not like this movie.
I formed no attachments or connections with the characters so when they were hurting or crying I was sitting in the theater rolling my eyes. I did not cry, I did not laugh, I did not get angry, I did not get any type of emotional stimulation from this movie. Actually, I got a tinkling from the character in the movie who was supposed to be the least liked but that's it.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

"Bright Star" is a beautiful and well acted film, with wonderful scenery and interior lighting reminiscent at times of a Vermeer painting. The details of Keats' life and the use of his poetry will appeal to literary types. The plot is simple: his impoverished circumstances, tragic illness, and untimely death preclude marriage to his great love, Fanny Braune, and lead to prolonged 19th century romantic moping about. It is a movie to be avoided at all costs by those who require complex plot, action, or laughs for their movie enjoyment.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Bright Star is the story of Fanny Brawne and her passionate but doomed love for poet John Keats. The story reveals how the attachment effected Fanny and her family in a beautifully realized and evocative recreation of time, place and manners. Keats himself becomes almost an abstract ideal to the devoted girl as he removes himself from her for long periods out of a sense of conscience, due to his impoverished circumstances and an inability to provide for her, and a fear of being consumed by her. See it.

I appreciated the exquisite pacing of the drama and admired the director's refusal to sensationalize. The occasional readings of Keats's poems, and the contexts given to these readings, are exceedingly fine.

Thank God for the Australian Film Board and BBC - no major American studio is capable of such intensely understated portrayal of the depth of emotion in John & Fanny's love and restraint.

you're transported to a time when the only background noise is that of the things happening around you - not tv or radio - your own thoughts have importance & your individuality can be expressed - the beautifully sensual connection between keats & fanny shows a dept of emotion that is so unexpressed in the fast-paced, instant gratification, sound byte world in which we live today -
Yes, I recommend this movie.
