If you want to watch a big, sweeping, 1800’s English romance, perhaps you should curl up with that pint of ice cream and watch “Sense & Sensibility” in bed again because “Bright Star” doesn’t fit the bill. Sure, you have gorgeous countryside and fabulous cinematography, but the romance between poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw) and Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish) is much more muted than what one would expect. In fact, director Jane Campion has made a film that portrays more of their heartache than their amorous time together. But the beauty of the movie comes from just that, the budding passion of their love that cannot bloom fully because of societal constraints and unfortunate illness. And according to Keats, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.”
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Romantic Period in literature is a personal point of fascination for me, but this movie increased my interest.
Sometimes, in the technology-ridden world we live in, it can be difficult for us to experience an all-enveloping passion for life. This movie helps even the most tuned-out person glimpse into the heart of the Romantic sensibility.
The romance between Keats and Brawne sparkles (not flame hot, but smoldering throughout; intense sensuality, not lustful sexuality) and is equally matched by several superb readings of Keats's major poems. Neither overshadows the other, whilst each complementing the other exquisitely.
A must see.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

“Bright Star” is a brilliant drama written and directed by Jane Campion about the life and romantic love affair of 19th Century poet John Keats, played by Ben Whishaw and Fanny Brawne, played by Abbie Cornish. The movie runs just under two hours in length and is thankfully laced with linguistic lines of prose that breathe life into a rather boring recount of Keats tragedy that was his life. Campion, craftily used the magnificent imagery of the European countryside to enhance the visual scenery of such a slow time in history. Without the passionate affair between Keats and Brawne to heat up the screen I would have all but fallen asleep

Brilliantly acted, beautifully photographed and wonderfully written, Jane Campion’s Bright Star sets the stage for 19th century romanticism. Abbie Cornish’s adroit, forceful performance makes the movie, and it should rate a nomination. The pastoral scenes of English woodland and its change of seasons set the tone. The butterfly scene is worth the price of a ticket. But it is only for a few. Without a basic familiarity with Keats and his poetry, the viewer is surely lost. The plot and pacing is from 1818, not 2009. Two hours seemed like four. Three people walked out of the theatre, and my date fell asleep. The movie is only for patient period drama and literature fans. Otherwise, stick with the Major League playoffs.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Director Campion nails the atmosphere and time period perfectly in this nuanced tale of unrealized love and passion. All feels genuine here helped along by an eye for detail and environment. My only complaint is the lack of a thematic score. I just kept thinking there was often a place for a background score that would have added to some of the pathos, helped liven it up a bit and thread the whole tapestry together with a bit more emotion and edge. A treat none-the-less. See it!

Emotionally subdued story, nicely photographed, I would have to say, the story represents men as a woman (Jane Campion) would like men to be. I did stay awake and I did pay attention and I feel like I am a better person for having watched the movie. Meh.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Jane Campion tells a nuanced, complex story of an overwhelming but doomed love by bathing the protagonists in gorgeous light. Sometimes, Vermeer-like, she highlights her subjects by a window's glow; sometimes, in scenes reminiscent of "Elvira Madigan," they gambol in sun-bathed countryside. Abby Cornish & Ben Whishaw are entirely believable as Fanny and Keats. The early-19th century atmosphere, especially as represented by the fabrics and clothing so important to Fanny, feels genuine. Their textures are so richly shown that you want to touch them. Meanwhile, the story will touch you.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
