Important to separate the performance at the Met from the broadcast technology and the individual theater.
The performance was wonderful- as a diehard Rene Fleming fan, it was great to see her in a vehicle that let her simply sing. The music was lovely. The plot was silly, a minor price to pay to hear her.
I have only seen a few HD broadcasts, but each has had some tech glitches. This time it was the sound going out until the overture began, and the video coming online after the curtain went up. I don't know whether this was nationwide, or a local problem. The sort of chance you take by not being there in person.
The theater otherwise was very good, no noise distraction from other shows, and a better choice of refreshments than usual at a multiplex.
Overall, compared to the cost of going to NYC to see the opera at the Met, a terrific deal.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! A splendid experience. And there was NO bombing, explosions, etc. coming from adjacent theatres! A first, I think.

I really enjoyed the HD performance of Armida in spite of the generally unforgiviing reviews in the major press. Granted it could have been shorter but it was it was good to have the opportunity to see and hear it uncut. I had listened to the premiere performance on XM radio.
I didn't even think that the kitschy touches (e.g., demons in tutus) were too much, particularly when compared with those in Tosca. I certainly wish it were possible to hear Callas' 1952 performance and I look forward to listening to the younger Fleming's CD.
Finally these Live in HD performances are such a treat and such a bargain that I would unreservedly recommend them to anyone

Anyone wishing to read a review of Armida should go to the NY Times website. It is entirely inappropriate to solicit "reviews" from the public for this performance. It is not a "movie"; it is a simulcast of a live opera with a cast of world renowned singers. Anyone who missed it should definitely catch it in the encores. It is a tour de force for Renee Fleming at her coloratura best. The "writer" is Rossini.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

My husband and I love Renee Fleming's work. We were expecting something special with this performance and our expectations were exceeded. The story was very creatively told...and the scenery and costuming were great! We felt this was on par with or even exceeded last season's performance of Thais.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Best Met production I've seen. Totally unfamiliar with the score and was entranced. It was a double treat to have the ballet as the second act. The costumes were outstanding. Everything about this opera was outstanding. Would see it again tomorrow.

This was the best HD simulcast of an opera I have seen from the Metropolitan Opera in NY. Renee Fleming, the tenors, and the chorus and ballet dancers were all fantastic under the fine direction of Mary Zimmerman. The sets, lighting, and orchestra playing were also superb. It was thoroughly professional and enjoyable in all respects. I give this performance my highest 5 star rating!
