I saw this on Saturday in Hamilton NJ, and once again - as has been the case all season - the satellite feed delivered a too-dark picture. Surely, after all the complaints that have been flooding in since the Fall, this problem can be fixed? Let's hope the Met will have sorted it out by the time the Fall season starts. - Despite this, the production was enchanting: Renee Fleming was astonishingly beautiful, both in herself and in her vocal repertoire, and although I agree there was not much chemistry between her and her lover, this would not have been evident in the stage performance and hardly mattered. My one criticism is that, although the ballet interludes were beautifully choreographed, the camera angles tended to break up the visual impact and make the dancing seem a bit chaotic. The costumes were stunning, the character of Love was utterly charmingly conceived and acted out, and the Garden of Earthly Delights as seductive as it should be. The music, with which I was unfamiliar, was utterly ravishing, and I will get the DVD as soon as it comes out!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I have seen close to ten of the Met simulcast operas, and I think this one was my favorite so far! Renee Fleming and Lawrence Brownlee were AMAZING! The music was incredible and the performances was outstanding. The costumes and sets were well done. The love and vengence characters were a nice touch. And the story itself was really great, an interesting take on a love story. And I simply loved the ending (don't want to spoil it for those of you who have yet to see), but it was nice to have an ending where the girl chose a course of action other than being a puddle of tears on the floor.

Before starting my review I have read all the reviews already posted by now. I agree completely with all the positive reviews. The music is beautiful and all the performers did an excellent job. The Met definitely has the best voices and provides them with excellent opportunites to show their talent. I do not agree with some of Ms. Zimmerman approaches, but that is a separate issue.
My main complaint is with the quality of the presentation. I saw this opera in Randolph NJ and could not be more dissapointed. I attended the MetOpera transmissions before and this was definitely the worst of them all. The picture was dark and lacking contrast. It was quite difficult to see details of the stage. I could definitely get a better picture on a 50 year old television set with a worn out CRT. During the intermission I approached the movie house personnel suggesting that they attend to the equipment but there was no improvement during the next act. During the next intermission I spoke to the personnel again and was told the fault was with the transmission. I will try once more to see another opera in another location but if the picture quality will be the same I will rather wait for the rebroadcast on PBS than waste my money.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Fortunately, I enjoyed this opera much more than I expected to after reading the crappy review by jeremy gerard on bloomberg.com on 4/13/10.
My only criticism was with the dim appearance of the picture as compared to two other live transmissions I've seen at the same theater in NJ. I tried to get an Italian/English libretto to read before the show and couldn't find one. I truly hope as Renee Fleming mentioned in a backstage interview that this opera is repeated. I think it should be a standard in the Met repertory. I especially enjoyed the ending as it contrasted with Carmen's ending. The man rejected his seducer! What a refreshing moral to the story in these days. Additionally, the God of Heaven will always have victory over evil!

Have never heard of or seen this opera.
So did not recognize any of the music, but it was outstanding. This was the first time it was staged by the Met, one reason was probably because it required 6 tenors.

My theater was crowded with Renee Fleming fans anxious to see her in this rarely performed Rossini opera. I don’t think anyone was disappointed. Of special note: Mary Cunningham’s staging; Richard Hudson’s sets and costumes, especially those of the Spandexed demons; bass Keith Miller’s athletic demon king; the charming Act II ballet; the winsome girl who mimed Love; the five tenors (with special nods to Lawrence Brownlee, Barry Banks’ double roles and the Act III tenor trio); and Ms. Fleming’s splendid rendering of Rossini’s difficult coloratura as the alluring sorceress in love with a Crusader. And as usual, the camera work and sound mix of this Met Live in HD performance were top-notch. Can’t wait for the 2010-11 season!

"Armida" was my third Met HD live experience. I thought it was terrific. The opera itself was a delight. The intermission features add a welcome introduction to what takes place back stage. I am pleased that there will be 11 opportunities to see the Met next season. The one negative feature was the unusually high volume of the sound. I don't know how it gets set and may be the local theater's decision but it was just too loud for my taste. I was at the La Jolla ATC 12 theaters.

Three of us saw "Armida" at the AMC Theatre on Stapley in Mesa, AZ. The projection was terrible. The whole screen was cloudy and out of focus. I talked to the manager three times. The first two times I was told that they would take care of it. The third time I was told that it was a faulty feed, that they couldn't do anything about the problem. All three of us had headaches by this time, and I was actually nauseous because of the fuzziness. We left
at intermission. I have seen Metropolitan broadcasts at five different theatres. This is the only theatre which was unsatisfactory.

This was my first time at one of the broadcast operas, and it was an excellent experience. I'm a Rossini "nut" and this was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see a good production of "Armida" with a glittering cast. The singing was almost universally outstanding. I'm always blown away by the beauty of Fleming's voice, and she handled the fiendishly difficult fioritura magnificently. There wasn't that much chemistry between her and Brownlee, but he sang beautifully as well. The staging was extremely effective. One of the best opera ballets I've seen in a long time, and the bass role was outstanding as the singer both sang and danced at the same time. The chorus handled the choreography extremely well -- this was much more than the usual "stand there and sing" performance. If you like bel canto and haven't seen this opera before, be sure to catch the encore performance! I'll definitely be back for more of the broadcasts!

The vocal & dramatic performances were superb (6 tenors and Renee Fleming too!) and the sometimes surreal staging was just amazing. I would highly recommend the Met Opera series to everyone. While attending the Met itself would be a treat, it's wonderful to be able to have the best seat in the house (no binoculars needed when viewing in hi-def at the theatre) and to be treated to interviews with the principals and backstage peaks during intermission. I am so looking forward to next season!

The HD Broadcasts from the Met are fantastic. Very informal, inexpensive way to see the best of opera. The intermission interviews are very informative, and you see everything so much better than at the Met. Not the excitement of being there, but the trade-off is well worth it.
Armida was a new one for us and we LOVED it. Besides beautrful music and incredible singing and acting by all, the sets, costumes, and choreography were outstanding.

We saw Amerida at the Revere Showcase Cinema. The seating was among the best but the sound system wasn't up to the task. At times the sound was muddled and too loud (probably over amplified) which was a shame because the voices and music were beautiful. I did ask to have the sound lowered which helped but it was still lacking in quality.
The opera was a wonderful surprise but perhaps Rossini embellished the voices too much with coloratura over, over and over again. The story, like many operas, was a bit over the top, but as a vehicle for voice ad orchestra it was great. The cast handled it well and Renee Fleming managed the difficult role with apparent ease.
The trio at the end of the opera was problematic; Barry Banks' voice just pierced the air leaving Kobie Van Rensburg looking mute. Even Lawrence Brownlee was overwhelmed when Barry was singing.
As picky as all this, the experience was very good and no hesitation in recommending.

This presentation was marvelous. Also, there were no technical "glitches" such as the sound being intermittant as was the case in a few of the earlier operas.
It would be nice if an announcement could be made in each theater before the opera starts about cell phones being turned off and no cell phone conversations such as happened in the theater we were in. I think these people should be escorted from the theater and not allowed to return. Also, people sitting in the "Luxe Level" should be cautioned about making too much noise as they "dine" during the opera.

I couldn't take my eyes off of Renee Fleming. Her comfort and poise in performing this difficult coloratura role mesmerized me. Her voice is one of the best, her beauty shone, especially in the gorgeous gowns she wore, and her subtle acting was perfect. Armida could have been written just for her! Thank you all the rest of her fellow singers. You did a great job of supporting her.
My pet peeve in these recordings is that when there is a lot going on on stage, ie the ballet scene, the cameras tend to focus in too close for too long, and we don't get a chance to see the entire effect. More wide angle cameras are needed so we can watch the ballets, etc as if we are seated in the mid-front orchestra. This has been true of all the other operas I have seen at the cinema since the met began doing this.
But nontheless, thank you, metropolitan opera, for reaching out to the larger public. Now if we could only entice more younger people to attend these performances, I'm sure we could create many more opera lovers. Go Met! Go Renee!

I am really hooked on NY Met Live Broadcasts. I thought the singing and the acting were excellent. My only complaint is that the "movie" was too dark. Yes, I could see the main characters but the stage setting and the "cast of thousands" was obscure and the subtitles were sometimes hard to read. I do hope things brighten up next year because I'll be there.

Renee Fleming was outstanding as always. The bass blew the audience away with his athletic portrayal of a fury from hell, and his voice, wow! As for the tenors, 5 of them play six characters, and there is even a tenor trio. The lead tenor not only sings high D, he is also eye candy. Quite a bit of "anything you can sing I can sing higher". The orchestration has some unusual moments as well, opening with bassoons and French horns featured. There are lovely string solos as well.

I was enthralled from beginning to end by Ms. Fleming and Mr. Brownlee's performance. I think they had wonderful chemistry. The body language from Ms. Fleming was soft, inviting and loving (when wooing Ribaldo). Mary Zimmerman was, as always, creative and magical. The choreography of ballet and demons was superb. And a perfect choice and performance from Cupid. The only thing I could see that might be less than perfect was a few of the animals hanging and perched on the backdrop. They weren't alive and looked very posed--- but sitting in a movie theatre with closeups is different from sitting in the live audience, so perhaps I am harsh.

I thought Renee Fleming was so talented--her singing is magic and her acting is quite good as well. However, I found the "chemistry" between Armida and Rinaldo to be sorely lacking. In many ways, that was a casting flaw--an older man should have been cast in that role in my opinion. I also thought the first act was a bit of a drone, but the ballet in the second act brought the show to life and from then on it was quite engaging.

The performance of Armida had everything. Beautiful sets, costumes, dancing and, of course superb singing. I always have admired Renee Fleming's extraordinary voice but after hearing and seeing her performance in Armida, my opinion of her soared. The role of Armida posed a most demanding test for an artist's vocal skills and stamina and Renee Fleming made it look easy. Armida also was a first for the MET.

While I think Rossini's later operas were more brilliant, Fleming's singing in this conventionally-written but very enjoyable one is reason enough to present it and to attend it, and then there are the rest of the fine cast in addition to her! The musical performance is very fine right through, with good tempos. And we can hear it well; the mix is clear even when soloists, chorus and orchestra all hold forth. But the camera is so often mercilessly close, we can't see what's going on sometimes; when we do see, though, we enjoy some beautiful scenes. Recommended. Catch the encore 5/19/10.

Renn'ee was fantasic but the chemistry was lacking between her and Lawrence. The lack of chemistry took away the credibility of the story line. His Italian was excelent and very clerly understood, he needs to be casted in a roll that his abilities will shine. The temptresses were out of sync poorly cordinated and at times laughable. Part two was when it became truly worth seeing and the ending was excellent. Overall I enjoyed the performance as did my friends.
