A dark tragedy, told in shades of grey, black, white & Gertrude's purple gown. The staging was unique; very little background placing all attention on the actors and their actions and wonderful voices. The dim view was hard on the eyes, but the ears were treated with majestic sounds. Where can I purchase a recording?

Hamlet was the first Met live HD performance that I attended. I expected it to be good, but was not prepared for HOW good, great an experience it was. I think that, whether you are a fan of Shakespeare or not, whether you know the story of Hamlet or not, whether you appreciate opera or not - if you have even one ounce of any type of artistry in your soul, you would hav to love this production. The voices, the acting, the music, the photography, the close-ups of both singers and orchestra members, the backstage interviews - Oh My God! - taking nothing away from actually being at te Met, this is a priceless experience. I plan to go to many more next year, though I can't imagine how another could compare to this Hamlet. Also, Horatio (Liam Bonner) was outstanding! Can't wait to see him in bigger roles.Bravo!!! Please put these in more theatres, and keep the prices affordable.

Singers, orchestra, and opera were excellent. It was my first time at this venue, and the sound wasn't "over-amplified," as it was at another venue, which greatly improved enjoyment of the performance.

A relatively unknown French opera--rarely produced--that deserves a regular place in the repertoire. Gorgeous love duet in the first act. Intense acting required and delivered by the principals, especially for the last-minute substitute Ophelia. There's still a chance to see the reprise performance. I really don't know why this opera isn't performed more. It was fantastic. The orchestral score was fabulous! I was surprised when I heard the Saxophone come in as it usually isn't in the orchestra, but it's use was wonderful where the solo was placed. All singers were wonderful with the exception of Mr. Morris who was having some pitch problems periodically. Maybe he was just tired. Hamlet and Ophelia were outstanding. Amzazing that Marlis could do such a great job with such short notice. I really look forward to May for the last simulcast.

I agree with everyone. The camera moving along the front edge of the stage really gives you, the viewer, the feeling of being an on-stage observer. It really brought the tragic feeling home to me. I needed a drink afterwards and, fortunately, there was a wine tasting at the liquor store where I stopped. Then home for a nap!!

We were totally absorbed in this opera version of Hamlet. The acting and singing were riveting, the interviews with Renee Fleming added so much to our understanding of what the singers and conductor were trying to convey. Everytime we attend an HD Opera it exceeds our expectations.

I was not at all familiar with this Hamlet Opera. The voices of the leads were wonderful. The music was wonderful and gorgeously played - in pariticular, the trombone solos had a magnificent tone. But of greatest note is the acting, led my an amazing Hamlet - a modern day Olivier, last minute Ophelia fill-in and the Queen. Best acting I have seen in an Opera in many years.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was SO pleasantly surprised! This is the BEST WAY to experience an Opera because they take you back stage, put you ON STAGE and even in the pit! For the price, you see SO MANY more features than if you were sitting in The Met in person! It was truly fantastic! I will be registering to see all 11 next season! Only wish I had gone sooner! Not an opera I ever even heard about before, and I wouldn't have seen it but for the HD broadcast. The singing was wonderful, especially Hamlet, Ophelie and the queen. Wonderful voices and impressive acting. The HD series is so great because it brings these world-class operas to everyone.

As I was unfamiliar with Thomas' version of Hamlet, I approached it without knowing what to expect. I found that the opera itself, and the production by the Met, were wonderful! There is an unrelieved darkness about this production which fits the somber theme of Shakespeare's play. Hamlet's anguish is borne out by every scene and every note of the performance. There are not even any curtain calls to relieve the tension until the opera is over. None are done at the end of acts, as is a common practice. The full force of the tragedy came across in a powerful manner.

A magnificent production in every way. It's no wonder this opera has not been staged by the Met for 100 years: there was no baritone around who could match Simon Keenleyside's vocal abilities, physique and, above all, acting . chops. I"d never seen this opera, but know the Shakespeare play very well and was captivated by the operatic performance!! The fact that the plot diverged from Shakespeare's is immaterial. It had to because it had to be adapted to lengthy musical pieces. I was astounded by the beauty of the music and thought the lack of "sets" made us focus on the music and acting rather than a spectacular set (as in Madama Butterfly" and "The Magic Flute" productions (which were wonderful in their own way. Ophelie, flown in from Europe on a moment's notice to play the part, was WONDERFUL. What a voice! What subtle acting skills! The whole performance was a joy to behold.

The Met in Live HD is an awesome experience. The opera Hamlet itself was not as good as the last 2 I had watched in Live HD (The Tales of Hoffmann and Carmen). Here, the decors and costumes were purposely reduced to a minimum to highlight the performances. Hamlet was great, as was the queen mother. Soprano Marlis Petersen who stepped in at the very last minute for a sick superstar Nathalie Dessey was good but not great. However, she did a great job given the 3 days she had to rehearse the opera! The music was excellent and features a lot of French horns, compared to the other operas I had watched. I still highly recommend these theatre performances. It's unlike anything you've seen in a movie theatre. Just missed the beautiful costumes and decor, as well as the incredible lighting in this production of Hamlet.

Absolutely fabulous. I've seen a lot of Hamlets, and this one tops them all from the standpoint of dramatic impact. The story departed from the original Shakespeare at times, but this didn't bother me. Several scenes took my breath away.

This was one of the finest simulcasts I've ever seen. All the performances were topnotch, especially those of the three leads, Simon Keenlyside, Marlis Petersen (who had to fill in for an ailing Natalie Dessaye!) and Jennifer Larmore. I was riveted from the first moment to the last. The orchestra never sounded better.
Renée Fleming does an outstanding job as interviewer between acts--she's an insider who knows what she's talking about and she's funny too. She actually interviewed Keenlyside when he was covered with dripping red wine!
I've seen opera live at the Met, and have to say I like the simulcasts better. The lighting was a little dim in this production and I would have had a hard time seeing the facial expressions if it hadn't been for the fantastic camera work and closeups. You just can't get that live, even with great opera glasses.
I will probably buy the video if and when it comes out.
