I was a little worried that the movie was going to feel disjointed with different actors playing Heath's role, but it did't feel that way at all. The continuity was preserved and the story flowed well. A great performance by everyone, though the shining star was Christopher Plummer.

I was impressed... I was really curious to see what the "face" transition was going to be like because of the passing of Heath Ledger in mid-filming. You would never know that that was an "after-thought". I would recommend this movie to anyone/everyone!

I would call this an "absolute movie" (similar to an "absolute music"), talking story by extremely abstract language of a cinema. Great acting, plot, soundtrack - are in a harmony with Gilliam's genius telling us eternally old story of a rivalry between good and the evil.
Brilliant acting turns psycho Lego blocks of the imaginarium into a masterpiece and a significant event in the history of a cinema.
Inner similarities between Joker and Tony Liar scares for a moment to the extent that gives an impression of Ledger playing himself and doctor’s mind is barely mirroring Terry Gilliam’s own!
This “for selected tastes” movie I watched twice and planning to go again despite the fact it does not have 3D effects of Avatar.

Heath Ledger passed on to the ultimate "Imaginarium" two years (and a day) before I saw his final film. And what a film it was!
It was enjoyable seeing Ledger on screen one last time and his three visits to Parnassus' Imaginarium were well done (when a different actor took on the character's role). Tom Waits was great as "Mr Nick" and the other actors did a fine job, too.
Terry Gilliam's unique visual style is all over this movie (in and out of the Imaginarium); the whole thing is kinda like a 21st century "Baron Münchhausen" with a more "straight ahead" plot (of a Gilliam film can be said to poses one of those).
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I have always loved Terry Gilliam's work and this is one of his best! I was impressed with how he was able to turn the tragedy of losing Heath Ledger in mid-shoot into a triumph for the film. Very few directors & writers could have pulled it off. Johnny Depp, Jude Law, & Colin Ferrell were wonderful as the many incarnations of Tony! As with most of Terry Gilliam's films, it will take a few more viewings to catch all that I missed. He always has so much going on in his films that you have to see them a few times to catch it all.

It was visually very lovely - I can easily see stills from the show being sold as pictures for one's wall... but it seemed more like a slow passage from one fantastic (as in "fantasy") tableau to another. I admit, I found myself nodding off one or twice - and since I am a rare movie-goer, that is very abnormal for me.

I was entertained by the beauty, imagination, and message of this movie. Heath Ledger was fantastic and I am sorry he is already lost to us.
My husband said Terry Gilliam keeps the same themes each time and presents it in a new way. I have no interest in Avatar. I think the human connection is much clearer in Dr. Parnassus.

This movie, yes, has the "fascinating" storyline of God vs. The Devil, Right vs. Wrong...CHOICES but is OUT THERE in its presentation. The use of incredible actors like Heath Ledger, Jude Law, and Collin Farrell is wasted in this film. I almost fell asleep 3 or 4 times during the film.

It's not difficult to read the film industry smoke signals when a bad movie opens. Here's a movie with the long awaited final performance of Heath Ledger and a little help from his big star friends yet it's obvious that Sony spent about a $1.95 in marketing costs. After seeing it I understood why. The storyline is a mess. The visuals represent the state of the art of movie-making for 1995, basically a third-world primitive production. You just sit waiting for something better to happen and it never does.

I've seen almost all of Gilliam's films when they first hit the screen and this is right up there with the rest of them. His visuals, strange and wonderful, punctuate solid performances by all of the various performers he works with. That all "The friends of Heath" could step in and save this film made it a must see. Bravo Terry!

I understand the good vs. evil battle and all, and the scenery and effects/CGI were incredible; but, it seemed that the movie was just a bit drawn out. I'm thinking that, in part, it's due to an effort to pay homage to Heath Ledger that they used as much of the footage they had of him as possible.
In the end, it's a good movie; but, I'd wait for it to come out on DVD.

I truly enjoyed this film. I didn't want it to end. Full of fantasy, color, twist and turn - the characters pulled me in, especially Heath Ledger. My true test of a good film: if I want to see it again, so I can just relax and see all the details without getting distracted by following and anticipating - this one is FULL of details. Another reason for this one in particular: to see Heath Ledger one more time on that big screen. I just don't want to let him go.

I can understand some people's frustration about this film and how they "don't get it". You need to be a Terry Gilliam fan, AND you MUST have a VIVID imagination. This is a fantasy film loaded with exceptional actors and very colorful characters. If you saw Time Bandits or Baron Munchausen, you will be more than pleased. If you are new to Terry's work, all I can say is go into this film with no expectations and a very open mind. Terry uses extensive imagery, simple dialogue delivered with full facial expressiveness and emotion!
What a great escape from reality and a very enjoyable film if you still know how to have fun and use your imagination. Leave reality at the door and step through the Dr.'s mirror. :-)

A morality tale about the inescapable role of our personal choices in the kind of life we live, the plot was complex and the story was fun. The special effects were magnificent and central to the story, not just placed there to show the designers' virtuosity. The costumes, the cast of characters were well chosen... the way the untimely death of Heath Ledger was handled was brilliant and well suited to the story line.

This movie was very strange! Not my type of movie at all! I thought it was going to be better since there were a lot of great actors in it but I was completely disappointed! Strange doesn't begin to describe this movie. I did enjoy it, more at the beginning than at the end. Heath Ledger has always been one of my favorite actors and his part in this movie was great. The movie was a little disjointed at times. There were a lot of times you would see something and then wonder if you really saw what you thought you saw and how did that fit in with the movie. I didn't try to get too deep into it, I just enjoyed it as a nice Sunday afternoon break from reality. If you are looking for something deep and meaningful, go see something else. If you just want to enjoy the creativity and relax for a couple of hours, this movie should do it for you.

This is a beautiful example of what modern story telling can be. The visual effects are simultaneously stunning, bizarre and beautiful. The movie does require attention, it is NOT just eye candy. The acting is spot on, with plausible performances from the entire cast. The effects are almost another character, moving the storyline forward, as well as providing insight into the players hopes, dreams, goals and motivations. For those who like movies that encourage them to think, with a healthy dose of strange fantastic environments, this movie is for you. For those who get angry when a movie requires you to think; go see something else, or suck it up. It's good for you.

Terry Gilliam's movie are always, unapologetically, about his subjective and personal vision. The result is something unique .... but certainly not for everybody. Gilliam's films take an investment from the viewer in order to see more of his intention and message. I have always found it helpful to read a synopsis of his movies before I actually see them. This helps me take in more of the movie's textures and visual effects. Loved this movie and it's "deal with the devil" theme. So many levels to explore and Gilliam "sticks his toe" into many of them. Plummer, Ledger & Waits are pitch-perfect and a lot of fun! Only complaint is it's very slow first 30 minutes.

Terry Gilliam's directing style is not for everyone but he did a superb job in rescuing this movie, otherwise doomed to the cutting room floor, after the untimely death of the Late Heath Ledger. It was great to experience Ledger's extraordinary talent once again. The movie is worth seeing on that basis, alone.
Johnny Depp was fabulous, as expected.
Parnassus is a morality play but the sets and costumes are lavish and enjoyable and serve to counter-balance the darkness of the theme.
I would caution that this movie is, in my view, inappropriate for children under the age of 14 years due to the theme.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
