James Cameron has taken CGI and 3D to a whole new level with this movie. The whole world was rendered in such painstaking detail, and in such a seamless fashion that it seemed very real and tactile. It is the visual aspects of this movie that catapult it into a must see on the big screen. The story line was just so-so, a tad bit maudlin – and the dialogue skidded towards atrocious at times. But the wonder of the world rendered on screen makes up for the weaknesses in the script and plot.

AWSOME movie a must see. I had heard the plot was non existant, not true, great plot actually very relevant to current situations in the world. Visually stunning, very worth the two plus hours, plan on seeing it a second time.

This was not only the best Sci-Fi / Fantasy movie that I have ever seen, it was the best movie that I have ever seen! I’m more of a Netflix kind of person. I would rather save my money and watch a movie at home.This movie was worth the $10 per ticket. The almost 3 hour movie just flew by. Visually this movie is breath taking. I’ve seen some negative reviews about this movie that claim that there are “hidden” meanings. The meanings are not hidden at all. Why do some have a problem with movies that show how we need to respect life, and the lives of others from other cultures that we do not understand? But as my father always says “that’s why they make vanilla ice cream, not everyone likes chocolate”.

The movie is a completely unique experience. Story is fair. Absolutely worth the trip. AMC Hoffman Theaters in Alexandria, Virginia was a huge disappointment. Understaffed, toilets backed up, 30 minute wait in concession lines. No adult supervision to be found in the place; just kids working with big attitudes. Strongly recommend you spend your money at another theater.

WOW, this is what movie making is about. A truly compelling story outstanding visuals and indelible sound make this movie a must see. The Imax experience was solid but not as great as I expected, dont get me wrong I was tempted more than once to swat something away only to realize it was part of the movie but there were some scenes that just came across as blurry and undefined. The beauty of this movie is that it needed no gimmick at at all and I believe the experience with no 3D would be just as compelling. It is rare that I leave a theater immediately thinking about buying this movie the minute it is released. Just tremdous

Through a special camera made for this movie, journey to a world of color, futuristic technology, animals that can communicate & more. This world reminded me a lot of what the garden of Eden must have been like, a world of balance & communication. Plants light the way at night, trees are able to commune & the inhabitants listen & respect the world that sustains them. When humans come...humans that have destroyed their own world... problems ensue. The story is not a new one but the way it is told in this film is fresh. This film will have different meanings depending on the watcher. Many will appreciate the beauty & the superb acting. Some will walk away & continue to think about the connections on this alien planet & have more to consider.

Dances With Wolves meets Star Wars, with generous dollops of Apocalypse Now, Alien, Terminator, and others thrown in. I went for the visuals, and was thoroughly wowed by the 3-D IMAX experience. What I didn't expect was to be so thoroughly mesmerized by the story, which was great, even though you had to look beyond some ultra-left wing tree-hugger sermonizing (I agree with the ideas in general; this was just a wee bit overboard). James Cameron did a great job not just with the effects (can you say, "Oscar"?), but with tweaking emotions. I was in love.

This movie was exceptional. Many action movies have great action sequences and little else. This whole world was well thought out and implemented. The acting was stunning through the use of performance capture. The story line was not origional but it was played out in a way that was unique and captivating. This movie had my attention from moment one and never let go.

I have seen all three. The regular version of this film is gorgeous, it is stunning and vivid and it is a good movie, but not a great movie, and I gave it only 4.5 stars at first. The 3D (regular) version is different. It's not as vivid or amazing, but it's extremely immersive, although the three layers and sometimes choppy movements leave aught to be desired.
The IMAX version, however, combines these two flawlessly, with a smooth, vivid, amazing and astounding experience.
The movie itself is wonderful, it is Lawrence of Arabia, The Last Samurai, Dances with Wolves, Fern Gully, etc. but retold with style.
Do not miss out on this, and I must must say please see it in 3D at least if not IMAX 3d (which is the best)

Well I would say Avatar grabs a hold of your attention and never lets go. The creation of such an amazing piece of work is beyond me. The best film of the decade I think, and the best film of all time for me.
I am definitely going to pre-order the dvd when it comes. I was dying to watch it again the moment I stepped out of the cinema.

James Cameron sets new heights for high-tech movies to aspire. With superb 3-D among other exciting special effects, gorgeous multi-layer seamless sets, and well developed characters, I find some of the more critical reviewers in need of reviewer critical care. While some viewers who are science fiction naive might have some minor difficulty, I was impressed with suggestions of a Jupiter-like world seen in the sky (as from Europa), the underlying unifying forces of Pandora, and the ability of Cameron to make us root for the aliens. Not to mention the computer graphic emotive eyes and facial expressions.
I actually dreamed about Avatar and flew over waterfalls. Will see it again and maybe again. My first movie review ever!

Great movie, did not disappoint. This was my first movie in 3D, and in IMAX, which is how you have to see this. Like much sci-fi must suspend some beliefs in reality (not to spoil anything but where were the nuclear weapons? the cruise missiles?) but they did a great job creating an alternate reality and a great story to boot.

Many critics have compared Avatar to being like Star wars episode IV, i cannot help but agree. The speechlessness i've been left in is probably on par with what people experienced back in the 70's. James cameron continued his legacy of making masterpieces, and like Star wars was innovative in cinematagrophy this movie has surpassed the reality and expectations of the movie going audience.
See it in 3d Imax to enjoy the full depth and richness of Pandora.

This movie is a must see, it's groundbreaking and amazing in every way. It wasn't just a movie to watch, but an experience of a lifetime. This isn't the 3D that you saw 10 years ago, which was probably the last time I ever watched something in 3D. There are certain scenes where, for example, embers or specks of light are floating down from the sky, and it honestly felt as though they were floating all around me.
I feel so lucky to live in a day and age where for only $13.50, I get to see and experience things that I would never get to in real life. To be put in this epic place, become emotionally invested, and both see and almost feel things that could only be described as fantastical. This movie is like nothing you've ever seen before.

This movie is AWESOME, and it represents the emobodiment of all the reasons I love movies so much!
This movie literally transports you to another world and immerses you in an entertaining and moving alternate realtiy. Although it highights (a bit over the top) the materialistic and greedy side of humanity – it also shows our capacity for love and empathy.
This movie visually demonstrates the potential value in all life, and has had the effect of causing me to question my own value system, and the purpose of life. I hope that many other people take away from this movie as much as I have.
In a rare treat – I can definitevly and enthusiastically write that this is a movie worth seeing more than once!

Do yourself a favor and see this. If you have been very good, reward yourself by seeing it in Imax. The 3-D enhances the realism and emphasizes the visually stunning Pandoran flora and fauna.
James Cameron has done for movies what JRR Tolkien did for books -- he has created a complete world in vivid detail.

Before I say anything let me make one thing clear: I am not a big fan of Titanic. So if you are one of those who thought Titanic was the tops then you will not like this review. I liked this movie for the effects...they are simply awesome, the whole concept of Avatars is fabuolous and thats where the movie earns all its 3 stars in my book. Other than that the story is very very predictable. Since there is nothing new there is no challenge for the actors so no point in talking about the performances. It is a well directed movie, but I was pretty bored after the novelty of the Avatars and the effects wore off. So overall I would definitely recommend you watch it but don't expect it to be an engrossing tale-just a visual treat.

Not to be missed on the big screen in3D & IMAX if possible. Great story. Breathtaking scenes. The beauty and scale of it all were at times joyfully overwhelming. However the intensity of the story keeps you at edge of your seat.

I've been pretty tough on movies lately and had modest expectations when I saw Avatar in IMAX 3-D. I was wrong. The movie is pure genius. The love (and money) put into this entertainment are apparent and obvious from start to finish. Don't be put off by nit-picky reviewers like me who search for flaws. Avatar is the reason to go back to the movies -- at least until they bring out an IMAX 3D home unit with 40,000 watts of surround sound. See it. See it again. I know I will until I find my socks.

OK...so the effects, makeup, and graphical work was incredible, but the story was truly amazing. I had not read the books and was unfamiliar with the storyline. I was surprised at how quickly I was drawn in.
The movie reminded me of what was done to the American Indian tribes. Definately one I would like to see again.
