This is one of those films that you wish were on a nationwide scale. 'The Hurt Locker' is a unique work of war and suspense! When I went to see this movie, I had no idea what to expect. This is an intense movie, and it could have been my favorite film of the year, yet, 'The Hurt Locker' ends sadly. It was a well written and well brought out, with not a good, but fair ending.

The director uses much less graphic violence than in most war time movies which leaves the viewer to their own imagination, wondering what can and will happen. This, coupled with superb character development (we really care about the characters) makes for an intense, rewarding and thought provoking movie experience. By the end of the movie, we feel as though we know these characters and feel what they are experiencing.

While all the reviews have mentioned the movie's action, this is a movie in which the action is wrapped around questions: Why do these people do what they do? What does it do to them?
If you're a veteran and a nitpicker, you'll find flaws with some of the military protocol--three-person teams weren't tooling around in Iraq by themselves in 2004, for example--but you'll have to admit you recognize these guys.

The war movie all others, before and after, will be judged. Phenomenal is a tepid adjective to use when describing "Hurt Locker". Tension so thick a chain saw couldn't even put a nick in it. At times I found myself leaning forward, elbows on kness,holding my breath and wanting/not wanting to see what would follow..
Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie won't have much free time after this, especially Renner. His facial expressions spoke volumes...better than any actor working today...even Sean Penn...could only hope to achieve. And the final scene?

I rarely see movies in the theater, but I made an exception after I saw an ad for "The Hurt Locker" on television. About 2h10m long, the film was fast-paced and kept me glued until the end. Themes include bonds forged among men, the line between obligation and volunteering in the military, the isolation of war, and the much-discussed notion that Iraq is a place where everyday hesitation can kill -- and what this means for the soldiers who serve there. "The Hurt Locker" is very story-driven and nicely produced. Highly recommended.

This isn't a political war movie, its not aboutanti or pro feelings. That kind of message is left up to the viewer, but you do see the anguish in some soldiers. this movie is more about the tense and dangerous job some men have in war. The Hurt Locker is to the Iraq war what All Quiet On the Western Front was to WWI, Objective Burma and Saving Private Ryan were to WWII, Fixed Bayonets and Port Chop Hill were to the Korean War, and Platoon and Steel Metal Jacket were to Viet Nam. Visually the film looks like a documentary, but dramatically it probes deep into the psyche of the soldier. It deals with two distinct premises: the daily coping with the fear and anxiety of death and the alternative, the insatiable addiction to the hormonal high. Detailed and well choreographed scenes provide a glimpse into the horrors that few Americans can even imagine. Superb performances, good script, and excellent cinematography overcome some questionable editing. Overall a triupmph.

This is the best war movie in a long, long time. No politics here....just the drama and tension that are at the heart of every battle - in every war. Kudos to female director Bigelow. Granted that some of the scenes were unrealistic but this film is a drama for the screen. Very well done and gripping and I didn't think it was as rah rah as others thought. I thought it was much less about the U.S. than a character study on these guys in this special unit and what they were getting or not getting off on about living this part of their lives in a surreal atmosphere in Iraq. The theme that "War is a Drug" tells the whole story to me and I thought this was a very well done, well acted film. One of the best films this year.

Some very tense action scenes don't necessarily make for an overall great film, although this is one of the best war films I've seen in a long time. It's a character driven piece that focuses on the job. These guy are all about their function in the war. The job. Outside of that there's really no movie in terms of plot, which is fine because Bigelow handles these intense scenes skillfully. These guys are interesting. A favorite scene involves Ralph Fiennes on the outskirts of town, in the desert. That's a great sequence. The acting is brilliant. Nothing clever in terms of plot; it's nearly a documentary. Fine work.

Having worked with returning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan, this movie, though a movie, rings about as true as an unbroken Liberty Bell. If you are into great actors, reality based suspense, and are bright enough to be able to extract larger meaning from concrete scenarios, you will love this movie. And if you truly care about what today's unconventional warfare does to people, watch, learn, and act.

Great concept with some real tension and action followed by boredom. Needs to be edited down to about 90 minutes with less good buddy, sappy hero scenes.
