You can see by Katherine Bigelow's resume that she likes to direct big, concussive , action movies and Hurt Locker is no exception. The story focuses on three men doing a very dangerous job in Iraq. They are part of a unit that disarms road side bombs and vehicles rigged to explode. The film gets into each man's head and their reason for doing this dangerous job. I watched parts of the movie through my fingers, it was so suspenseful. There is no moralizing about the war, it is really about these men. If you get upset easily at blood and gore, this is not the movie for you. Otherwise, I recommend this movie.

As a woman. I am a big fan of the director Katheryn Bigelow because she knows how to spin a movie full of muscle and tension. The relationship is this movie is a triangle of 3 soldiers stationed in Iraq whose job is to diffuse IED bombs. Each man approaches their job differently: one is steadfast & by the book, another wavering between committment and despair, and the last a living representation of the bombs he diffuses...reckless, driven, genius. You spend the entire movie on the edge of your seat waiting for the next explosion. I find myself still thinking about this film days later and would highly recommend it. Take a break from the usual summertime movie drivel and check this one out.

I hesitate to watch violent films because I don't want to be desensitized by the gratuitousness so often found in movies. This movie is a great example of how violence should be portrayed, as it left me with a heightened sensitivity toward what our soldiers are facing that I'm STILL thinking about. I appreciated the emphasis on the waiting--the uncomfortable, dangerous calm that is so painful--instead of jam-packing the film with explosion after explosion.

Intense and realistic. The atmosphere made me feel like I was there in Iraq. My only problem was with the camera movements. The conspicuous jerky movements and unnecessary zooms becomes too obvious and distracting. To me, that entire technique is getting old. Character development was rather slow as well. Still, it was great to see that the subject was treated with such great respect and authenticity and didn't go all "Hollywood" on us.

As a retired Navy EOD Tech with over 32 year's experience as a bomb Tech, I can definitely vouch for the authenticity of this movie. There was a tiny bit of dramatic license taken, but I have to say that it is a very realistic portrait of the world that my EOD Brethren are living in every single day. Creative title but more interested in creating buzz about this movie than the shock and awe of "In Theatre" . Quite frankly, I expected more. More about the subject matter. This is a very powerful war epic and no fan of this genre should miss it. It is also a very realistic portrayal of those serving and the unique dangers and stresses they face every hour of every day. I think that this film should be a must see for every adult voter, before we get involved in any other war. There should be some Academe Awards in line for this film and they will be well deserved.

The friend I watched this with yesterday agreed it was a very intense film, with a great deal of suspense and action. You get a very real feel of what it must be like and for that alone the film ranks with other great similar films. The performances, from the lead to main characters down to all the supporting players and excellent use of locations are all top notch. This is not a film for anyone other than a mature teenager, but otherwise highly recommended for yourself especially if you have a friend or family member who's ever gone to war.

As an EOD for the Marine Corps, I must say that this was a great film and I am very glad that they stuck with the soldiers point of view, and avoided the political BS. However... Marines do it better!!! HOORAH!!!

So much in this movie: The idea of someone moving towards something that all human instincts tell us to avoid. How children grow up in a war zone and don't even consider that they might be in danger because it's just the way life is. Psychologically, what makes a person want to volunteer for such a position. The tension built by the techniques behind the filming. The little bits, such as the flies in the desert, that keep you in suspense. Well acted. Definitely not just another war movie. I just wish David Morse had been in more than one scene.

It was nice to see it from the EOD guy's perspective...I'm glad they didn't turn it into some ARMY movie and instead stuck to the topic... Extremely intense. This has to be about as realistic of a war movie as has ever been made. It hits on the emotional toil, tragedy, and senselessness of the most serious and difficult situations any human can be put through.
If you have a relative in the service right now, be sure you are ready to see this before you go. I agree that it is near-perfect. It will change your view of what is going on over there.

This film takes you inside an explosives ordnance disposal (EDO) team during the first Gulf war.
The title is military slang for "being in a world of s**t" and it fits.
I don't believe in giving away too much plot but I can recommend this as being a spell binding triller that will keep you in you seat, so buy you popcorn in advance. The action is realistic and unrelenting.
See it on the big screen, it's worth the 10 bucks.

This is a wonderful film about soldiers and their bonds, not a war movie with a political view. It shows glimpse into the psyche and relationships of the incredible people who sacrifice for us. And it's amazingly suspenseful!!!

Fairly realistic scenarios which are plentiful in this expose' on bomb removal squads in Iraq. The movie has some very engrossing, dramatic scenes that are certainly entertaining. There are a few periods in the movie that seem to slow down the pace a little too much though. Don't want that to detract from the overall positive review though. Very insightful as to the methods the enemy will use and lengths they will go to in order to cause as much mass destruction and death as possible.

Definitely a movie to catch in theaters: super absorbing, incredibly tense and well-acted. I found it particularly it interesting that the suspense sequences (6 or 7 all told) each play out differently- sometimes cinematically, sometimes deliberately not. Character development's a mixed bag; it relies on standard movie types to pull us in. To the filmmaker's credit, she does turn around and play with audience expectations at times, but better illustrated motives or back stories may have rung truer. I'd give it five stars straight up, but reserve that for films that leave me with an adrenalin rush-- this movie may intend the opposite. For this reason I might revise my score one day, but for now it's a see-for-yourself 4.

This was a powerful and telling movie that shows just how brave our young men are and how difficult the situation has been. This is a real big screen movie! Shot a little like a documentary, it is a great film.

Away from the action of the movie, which completely captures the viewers' attention, the character development of the movie is one of great depth and interest. The movie is completely coherent, unlike 99% of the product put up on the silver screen. If you are looking for a serious movie which is also entertaining, the hurt locker should be at the top of your list.
