This movie takes you on a ride that doesn't let you off until the last minutes of the film. You feel as if you're actually there, in the sand and heat, dismantling bombs and fearing for your life. The action and the dialogue feel real and you almost forget you're watching a movie. Highly recommend seeing it in a theater so you feel the bombs and guns like you're really there.

An interesting premise which should be riveting becomes downright boring in the second half. and predictable (c'mon, i said "3, 2, 1...and BOOM, the colonel blew up). pros - performances, character development of the squad members. cons - shaking camera, stereotypes of soldiers and citizens, the ending (like i said - predictable). recommend waiting for it on cable.

I agreed to go to this movie with a friend not knowing a thing about it. She said that it had created a lot of buzz and was up for an Academy Award. So, I briefly read a little bit about it before I met her for brunch.
This is NOT my kind of movie. At this age, I tend to avoid movies about the Holocaust and the Mafia. I must add movies about war to my list.
My main pleasures from a movie come from good stories. This movie certainly had good acting, good camera work and decent direction. More of a "slice-of-life" look at soldiers in combat than a traditional story, all it did was to make me think throughout that "War is hell and its best warriors are crazy."

Katheryn Bigelow tells an amazing story of the people who defuse bombs in wartime Iraq. Its not just another war story. For the story is not about the war but about the people. Its complicated and at the same time quite simple. This is a very emotional tale of men who are asked to act without emotion and how it affects them and all those around them. There are several very graphic scenes which make this inappropriate for children. Definitely a strong Oscar contender, which is all the more interesting since Bigelow's ex is up for an Oscar with Avatar. Coincidence? I think not.

Now this is a good movie. The only reason i didn't give it 5 stars was because of the sickening (literally) use of the shaking camera. When is this fad going to end? The performances, the tension, the writing, all add up to a wrenching sad but honest picture of war. I've read that some soldiers feel that the film is not completely accurate but this is a movie not a documentary and at least for me it rings true. The best anti-war film in recent history. Bring our soldiers home!!!

Unlike the psychos in HOSTEL, Bigelow's psychos look as real as they are. For everyone who never understood why foreign "fighters" came to Iraq to join al-Qaeda, their motives are made obvious here.

This engrossing film brings the fundamental challenge of fighting the Iraq war into sharp focus: insurgents look like civilians and IEDs are hidden everywhere. IEDs have replaced conventional combat as the most deadly threat coalition soldiers and the Iraqis on "our side" face. As such, focusing on the special bomb squad serves to illuminate the day to day life in Iraq circa 2004. The character development is rich and complex. The suspense unnerving. I highly recommend this film! I am not a supporter of the Iraq invasion but I have a new appreciation for the troops that are doing their job and risking their lives.

This film was touted as "non-spin". Sort of, although it does avoid the “war is always pointless and stupid” preachyness of films like “Stop-Loss” and “Jarhead”. The film follows three U.S. Army EOD specialists through the last month of their tours in Iraq. The main character is trapped in kind of a nihilistic void, not finding much hope and meaning in life despite the fact of having a wife and son. He’s a danger junky that gets high off pushing the envelope and taking unnecessary risks, ones that put the rest of his team in jeopardy. Hurt Locker is not bad at all, often tense and given the subject matter, pretty grim throughout.
The film is a grim reminder that war isn’t a very nice thing, and that our enemies aren’t very nice either.

This movie perfectly captured the nature of the threat that our soldiers face out in Iraq. I live by Ft. Riley (home of 1st Infantry - Big Red One) and was able to talk to some soldiers about the film. By and large they thought the movie captured the fear that IEDs gave them. In what I would consider to be a very tight movie (one that doesnt have a lot of excess that doesnt deal with the focus of the movie) the range of circumstances that are covered is impressive. This movie will give you a quick introduction to what the Iraq War looks like on the ground.

This was an interesting movie about a group of soldiers with a very dangerous technical duty in Iraq. As a person who has lived in the Middle East, I appreciated the way they filmed it. The Iraqi characters and landscapes were very believable. (It was filmed in Jordan with Iraqi refugees.) The story showed a range of soldiers from macho irresponsible but good-hearted, to responsible but overreactive, to scared shitless. It highlighted how in a war fought among civilians, it is nearly impossible to distinguish innocent behavior from threats. And it showed how danger can be not only dreadful but also addictive.

I was a little deceived from the trailer that this would be a documentary of soldiers in the Iraq war. I was wrong. While it showed the intensity of what some troops on the front line experience, it focused more on the inaccurate myths of American soldiers, e.g., they shoot innocent Iraqis, they get drunk and punch each other for fun, they are reckless with civilian lives and their own lives just to "get an adrenaline fix", they are incapable of maintaining healthy personal relationships back home, Iraqi children throw rocks at their vehicles, etc. Being someone who has friends who have served multiple tours in Iraq and who has even lost a friend in Iraq, I was hoping for a more accurate and respectful film about their experiences.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

There is one segment in particular you will want to close your eyes for as much as 1 minute. Not suitable for children. This is a very realistic film and although it shows a kind of heroic and dedicated leading role, it isn't really a glorification of war itself. Rather, the movie is a tribute to the poor people in adverse circumstances and the self sacrifice that one man offers to humanity. Good film. Should be an Oscar winner.

I thought it was EXCELLENT every part was like I was right there in the movie.This is the best movie I have ever seen since forest gump.

A must see movie for anyone who knows someone who has served in Iraq or Afghanistan. The actors in this movie were fantastic. Some academy awards better be in store for this one!!
