Old age, life and death in all its complexity and unknowable aspects is treated beautifully in this darkly humourous film filled with pathos and kindness. Not for the average Disney-fed American market, I fear, but let's hope that outside influences prevail. Terrific acting, beautifully and unsentimentally wrought themes, with the indomitable Michael Caine and "Son of Rambow" star reaching deep within for incredible performances. A must for grown-ups, and those who get that life does not come in neat packages, in spite of the Disneyfication of America....
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Whoever wrote this story used up the entire writing arsenal to try and pull at the old heartstrings. The attempt comes off as pretentious and forced. The premise is about a young boy and old man's friendship and the boy's search for life after death. Throw in a few other plot nuances for good measure and it still is not palatable. Some of the British dialog is so heavy you almost wish for subtitles. Nope, throw this one into the celluloid trash heap of eternity.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I'm in complete agreement with Roger Ebert's review on this; basically I enjoyed this movie only due to Michael Caine's performance. That's deserved, since he's the reason I saw it.
There's nothing really entertaining or uplifting about the plot or story, and there were no characters to admire, save for Mr. Caine's, and that only in part. I suspect that little of that was on the page, and more of it came directly from him.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This was a charming, intelligent, well-acted, and moving movie. Micheal Caine and the young boy have great chemistry and both give great performances. It's about how caring about and helping other people can sometimes really make a big difference both in their lives and yours. Similar in some ways to "Harold and Maude".
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Another small independent movie gem! Too few will see it....but we all should! Jam-packed with great acting all of which is pitch perfect. The story is told on screen without hyperbole & manipulation. We can believe it almost as a documentary. Michael Caine just gets better & better as he ages....like a fine wine....to use an apt but over-used metaphor. A gold star to the cinematographer, director Crowley and his entire team. A really nice contrast film to "clean the palette" after gorging on the typical early summer fare of action movies with their extra helpings of steroidal "sound & visual" gravies oozing from the digital celluloid. Try to catch it at a theater for the full atmospheric pleasure.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Gripping tale about what happens after a person dies. Michael Caine, an aging magician, and Bill Milner, a curious 10 year old boy, engage each other in trying to answer the question. Both Caine and Milner play stellar roles.

Based on the review in the LA times (great performance from Michael Caine), we went to see this movie. It's a little less edgy version of "Harold and Maude" (main character is a young boy who is curious about death, and learns about life from an older character), however it was entertaining to watch and all of the actors did a great job in their roles.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

If I was looking for a movie with a completely new and original story, I would have been dissapointed with this film. However, despite the "been there" feeling the movie exudes, it worked. i do not think the intent of the film was to break new grounds, but to tell a simple story of two people who desperately needed eachother, who impacted eachother, and helped eachother through the particular point of their life's journey.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
