The computer animation for the tiger and all the other animals is simply amazing and gives the story a kind of realism that previously was just not possible. At times you are totally captured by the visual intensity of the strange solitude at the films center as the lifeboat drifts aimlessly in the ocean. Yet, this is purported to be a story that will make you believe in the existence of God. On that level, it never really hits its mark. Regardless of how incredible the story may be, it never rises to something spiritual. And then just when you feel that the story is over, out of nowhere, the rug is pulled out from under you and everything you have accepted is rewritten and redefined in a far more grim allegory told to the Japanese investigators who are trying to understand why the ship sank. They are asked to choose which version they want to believe and they defer to the romantic version we just watched. But clearly this is all just a mental bandaid for Pi who can not accept the reality of the unthinkable horror he witnessed at sea. Its a very powerful realization and a very well made film, but its at time slow and surreal and certainly not for your typical movie goer looking for a simple shoot em up. Ang Lee has never been a traditional Hollywood director, but his sensibility for the unique shines here.

The book was excellent and not many times do you read a book and then think they did a great job on the movie. But this one was different. Ang Lee did a superb job bringing this book to life. A must see!

My friend insisted I see this before I'd really gotten into the book. Having seen the film it brought so much color and detail to the story that I can now appreciate the book even more. My eyes couldn't get enough of the beauty and color particularly Richard Parker. All in all a great film.

Life of Pi was visually stunning and very very good. It had a slow start and seemed as if the film makers were trying to prepare American audiences for the Indian religion and culture of the main character. In the novel by Yann Martel, these aspects were less obvious, but still prevalent to the “seeking God” aspects of the plot.
An interesting note: The novel was rejected by at least five London publishing houses before being accepted by Knopf Canada, which published it in September 2001. This just goes to prove again how literary publishers have no idea what is really great.
I found that after the story really starts, when Pi and Richard Parker are on the boat lost at sea, the fantastic takes over and we are taken into a world of incredible scope, where nothing is impossible.
I give Life of Pi 4 stars and highly recommend it. It is visually stunning and has fantastic imagery. — MR

A wonderment of storytelling with visual stimulation to boot... Don't miss this in 3D. Absolutely worth the big screen special effects during this daring adventure. I heard that this was Suraj Sharma's first acting role... For someone who spends 90% of the film alone (with on screen CGI animals), it was an amazing fete and he should be commended on his stellar performance.

Okay, not entirely fair. You will have some uplifting, "feel good", even inspirational moments; but do not expect to walk out of that theater feeling ready to take on the world. Do plan on being given an opportunity for endless discussion and wonder with your kids and/or friends about life, truth, and the universe. wapped in a package of stunning cinematography. Personally, I thought 3D was unnecessary; but I haven't seen the 2D version.
Strong warning, be patient, think, wonder and Skyfall it ain't. It is an incredibly beautiful and captivating experience however.

I had read the book with great interest some time ago and was amazed that anyone would try to film that story. Technically, this film was terrific: the most beautiful images of sun and water that I have ever seen, and very realistic-looking animals, as well as good acting. I spent a lot of time simply wondering at the spectacle offered by the director. Visually this film has no real rival, and it takes 3D to a stage beyond Avatar. However, the script does remove a bit of the subtlety of the book and belabors the final point rather than allowing the viewers to figure it out themselves. A twist that you come to understand without having it spelled out for you is all the more powerful. But even with that caveat it is a remarkable experience.

The movie is magical. Amazing to watch. The 3D didn't add anything. *(unlike HUGO). It didn't harm anything either but was more of a distraction than it was worth. Nonetheless, highly recommended.

This movie looked as if it was going to be really good. The beginning was too long. The ship sinking and the initial time in the raft with the different animals was awesome but to me died after that and became a big bore.
