This was a very well put together film with inpeccable acting. I love most English films and this one moved to the top of my list. Had my 15-year-old niece with me and her attention was locked in from the very beginning of this film. If you have a daughter 13-16 years old, definitely take her. I am sure you can have a very interesting discussion with her on the way home or stopping off for a nice lunch or dinner afterward.

I had not seen any advertisements for this movie, but stumbled across it in the line up at the local theatre. When I saw the high ratings by both the audience and the critics, I decided it might be worthy watching. I was NOT disappointed -- it is a charming, entertaining, bittersweet movie. The cast is excellent even if most of them are unknowns. The female lead reminds me of Katie Holmes.

I've been waiting for a while to see this movie since it has very limited release. Whenever I went to the theater right before it was sold out. It was worth waiting though. I regret demand for such movies is not larger in USA and this causes limited release. This is more European movie. Perfect job! No high end actors but mastery acting!

premise: it is 1961 and a 16 year old London schoolgirl, mature for her age, falls for a suave possibly 35 ish older man who doggedly pursues her. her parents are stupidly charmed by the guy and let her date him and be taken on trips. schoolgirl is always in his car opening the glove box for a cigarette until, near the end of the movie, she discovers mucho letters in the glove box from his wife....the typical dumb philanderer pretentious slip up that deflates the movie going experience. this affair is her education and seals the decision to continue onto prestigious Oxford instead of getting married and be taken care of. a big waste of time in my humble opinion.

A coming of age in the '60s tale, interesting for it's perspective. Aside from some excellent performances, not much else to recommend this pic, as it's rather formulaic. Confession: my clearview cinema was running a copy that had a defect - a scratch - manifesting as a yellow/green/black line visible at the quarter left of the screen for a full hour. it was totally distracting, annoying, and irritating. i've reviewed the film as honestly as possible...but, clearview gets an F. "clear view"??? give me a break!!!

She has school to finish and is shooting for acceptance into Oxford University. 24-year old Carey Mulligan plays the 16-year-old and is utterly believable and utterly adorable. All the actors are fine, in this plausible tale of ill-fated attraction. It's such a pleasure to see a fine movie that relies on a good story and good acting. versus special effects eye-candy. This is a small movie, but an excellent one.

The movie is pretty to watch with the period scenes of England and Paris and the acting was pretty good. I was a little disappointed in the lead actress because the reviews of her were so glowing but the character portrayed was kind of inconsistent, seeming to be a child at times and other times much older--one could say that is the point but I wasn't convinced. Also, and this was my main criticism, the motivations of characters seemed overly simple to me and blame was assigned in a casual fashion, complex moral situations were glossed over in favor of a kind of simple melodramatic story line. Still, there are many worse movies and it was pleasant overall.

What a disappointment! I had read wonderful reviews of the movie but I was disappointed at the simplicity of the entire story. We have read and watched movies about the same topic so many times, that there was no need for another one. I have to admit that Carey Mulligan was phenomenal. Perhaps, she is the only reason why this movie is worthy seeing. Otherwise, I do not recommend it. Read the LA Times' Calendar section on Sunday, Nov. 29. It says that this movie is overrated. I really liked this movie, coming close to LOVE. One of those movies that when it comes out on DVD, I will watch over and over. While the performances were very well done by the entire cast, I didn't find the premise very believable. He wasn't really a con man as he was just the "bad boy" archetype, which really didn't seem so sinister. The girl comes off as way too sophisticated by any standards to me. Sorry, just didn't believe it, though the drama was spell binding. Lastly, it did go a little too slow for me, character development takes time but for this film its the premise of the story, and the resolution just concludes too quickly.

Stellar acting performances by everyone, even Dominic Cooper. Great dialogue, and very funny. It's filmed beautifully. The story gets a little weaker as the movie progresses but it's an accurate observation of a British schoolgirl's life in the 60s(I was one) if there was no handsome older man on the scene!

It seems that every year around this time, a little indy movie pops up and just overwhelms the big money films that surround it. "Juno" was one of those. This year it's "An Education." A well-plotted/scripted 1960's period piece with great cinematography and pitch perfect acting. We loved this movie. Lessons here are to be learned by all. I really cannot think of any faults or weaknesses in this film. It was enjoyable from start to finish. New comer, actress Carey Mulligan, was startlingly good. Where did she come from? Sarsgaard, Molina, Thompson all gave the kind of performances we have come to expect from such quality actors! See this move in theater for the full effect. Kudos to director Scherfig and his team.

A series of small devastations on an intelligent yet innocent and sheltered school girl. She is shown the world by an older man, and in the process becomes worldly in other ways. Even the dissappointment in her parents' faces is palpable. Beautifully shot, especially the nightclub scenes, smartly written and well-paced.

Very good romantic connection between the very likeable older man and his innocent prey, the young and lovely high school girl. Her father provides comic relief. The older man's associates, man and woman, add a somewhat sinister touch.
