Yes, the previews were slightly misleading about how funny this would be. This was a true comedy, but the humor was subtle and the actors kept the comedy within the context of the script without letting the comedic acting get too big. This is good acting in the tradition of theatre and classic film. Modern movie goers, however, want to ROTFL at crazy antics and witty oneliners. So, don't go to this movie thinking your sides will be splitting afterward. It was a solid story that kept itself understated and true to a quirky plot, with great actors doing their job well, and nothing extra!

Please, do NOT waste your money on this terrible movie. So many stars, yet such a poor and useless flick. I fell asleep three times during this movie, and wanted to just get up and leave, but I kept hoping against hope that it would improve. Outside of the "Ocean 11" series, I can't recall enjoying a movie that Clooney chose to be involved with. I think I'll pass on his movies in the future, at least until I've read other reviews here that change my mind. This movie wasn't really funny; I think it was trying to be serious and send some kind of message about supernatural powers, so if you are a reality-based guy like me you won't like it at all. I guess if you think what humans experience is an illusion, and the "real" world is out there, but impercetable to most, then maybe you'll enjoy this one.

Based on a true story, sort of, in an art house tongue in cheek, self mocking yet irreverent way requiring you to have a lot of inside knowledge as well as a strong willingness to suspend all disbelief because you love the actors and enjoy eccentric cinema.
There really was a BBC documentary and book that examined the Army's zany attempt to create psychic warriors. This version rests somewhere between mockumentary and the Coen Brothers. Its definitely not Hollywood and many will not get it. But if you are looking for something different, clever, and interesting this is it. If not, say what a goat says...nah.

I enjoyed this odd movie. all i want when i go to the movies is be entertained and that i was for the most part. there was only one time when i thought that i was bored and that has happened in many, many other movies. the cast is wonderful, but the story is quite episodic and rambling. there were a few sort of obvious slapstick jokes and then quite a few subtle moments of intelligent humor. it reminded me of a Don Quixote series of adventures set in Iraq except i'm not sure there was a definite quest. this film is not for your average movie goer. should have been a limited art house release.

Those who have given negative reviews need to lighten up and take the movie for what it is. This is not high drama but a comedy with a meesage - give peace a chance. There are some great lines in the movie, lots of laughs, and 2 great looking guys to watch - George Clooney & Ewan McGregor. 'Men Who Stare at Goats' is very funny if you have a 'big tent' sense of humor. In other words, you have to be able to laugh at the absurd, the farcical, the ludicrous, the political correctness and incorrectness, and yourself. The acting was the kind that makes you wonder if it was trying to be funny or tragic. I think it helps to understand this movie if you have lived through the earlier times that formed these characters, but I think you should worry about yourself if you understand it too well! I would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could, but give it 4 because I think too many people gave it a low rating because they were expecting something different.

How could a story that was based on an actual story have NO story?Longer (seemingly) than "Gone with the Wind," a plot that pales in comparison to Japanese-monster-terror movies, this star-studded cast made a star-stunted bomb. Late in the movie, Kevin Spacey's character has a pistol in his mouth. If I were Spacey (not the character he plays), I would have pulled the trigger..........twice, just to give the audience at least ONE laugh. The lights came on and no one in the audience would look each other in the eye on the way out. We were all ninety-eight minutes closer to the grave with nothing to show for the waste of precious time.

Jeff Bridges can do so much better than this also even though he hasn't done much in recent years. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND SEE ANOTHER MOVIE BESIDES THIS ONE!

Fans of George Clooney should get a good kick out of this absurist comedy. Clooney plays a "psychic warrior" in an arcane branch of the US Army, that purports to combat an enemy by using paranormal means. Look out for the sparkly eyes technique! There is a fine cast, including Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Spacey. Naturally, everything here, script and acting, is over-the-top. Clooney is wonderfully hammy, but not too much so. There is lots of silly fun in this movie. Enjoy!

This was one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. Most movies with a narrator will have some narration, then show a lot of action. This turkey is strict narration throughout. There were some mildly humorous parts, but the scene shown in all the clips--the goat falling over dead--was the only really funny part. It was a true waste of time and money, unfortunately, because we had really looked forward to seeing this.

I really enjoyed this movie, primarily because I really enjoyed Jon Ronson's book of the same name.
But the thing that most of the negative reviewers don't seem to have understood is that the book is non-fiction -- Jon Ronson is a real investigative journalist, and MOST OF THIS FILM IS BASED ON THE TRUTH!
It's also just very, very funny.

I want my money back- this is a huge rip off by Hollywood- I would make someone who lost a bet have to sit thru it! But only once as more than once would be cruel!
