You have to go into it knowing it is NOT a biopic about Nelson Mandela, though he plays a major role. It is mostly about his philosophy on life-- forgiveness and peace is the answer to hatred and oppression-- and how he uses it to get the country behind the white-favored but losing rugby team in order to unite the country post-apartheid. Morgan Freeman makes a great Mandela--raises him to Gandhi status-- and Matt Damon is good as the captain of the rugby team. Lots of good messages that we (the USA) need to hear about "make peace not war."

'Invictus' is one of the most inspiring films in years. It is a simple story, and slow at times, but totally engrossing. The acting and directing were great. My wife didn't want to see it because it was about sports (she thought), but she loved it. I didn't know anything about rugby, and I still don't, but that's not what it's about. It's about the amazing difference people can make when they do what is right instead of selling out for power, money, or vengeance.

"Invictus" is a powerful film with a lot of heart! Clint Eastwood did a great job capturing a slice of world history and putting it on the big screen.
As an American, this movie introduced me to a rough and tough sport I was not familiar with...rugby. And it also introduced me to the story of a legendary South African president and the challenges he faced uniting a nation.
Somewhat slow and a little predictable, this film still deserves to be watched for its message, drama, and historical content.

This movie shows that with great actors and directors, you don't need special effects and over the top fantasy story lines to have an excellent movie. What an incredible view of an incredible man trying to lead his country through domestic turmoil. We loved everything about this movie-especially the insights of Mandela's thinking and his brave and consistent approach. Taking a country from minority rule to majority rule is a task - but accomplishing it without massive alientation of the minority is astounding. Go see it - and take your Jr. Hi and older kids. THEY NEED TO SEE IT.

Long and a very flattering review of nelson mandela, who mainly deserves our praise. BUT the movie deifies him. Does anyone else recall the American Jewish Committee invited Pres. Mandela to NY to receive its highest honor. On arrival, he used the AJC for a hugely anti-Israel platform . . . and was sent home. The movie, which is quite long, hints at Mandela's naivete in his presidential role - after serving decades on Robben Island, who wouldn't be? Good performances by morgan freeman and matt damon. I would recommend.

I thought the movie was beautifully acted and found it moving, though not surprising. For Eastwood it was certainly a departure from his 'dark' side. Fantastic movie! Very inspiring. Great demonstration of Mandela's incredible leadership skills and wisdom.
I was also taken by the music during the credits at the end. I believe it was a jazzy arrangement of Gustav Holst's 'Jupiter' which is also used for "I Vow to Thee, My Country", an unofficial national anthem in England. Very cool!

I truly enjoyed the movie! I was a little skeptical at first because I didn't want to see a "heavy" movie -- but I was kept on the edge of my seat with anticipation. It was very moving. I was worried a bit about the length but it really held my attention. Morgan Freeman was excellent and Clint Eastwood directed a masterpiece. The only disappointment was that the theater we were in allowed much outside noise from people outside the theater, the adjoining theater and even the piano playing in the lobby. I would not prefer to be in this particular theater (#6) again.

This is a great feel-good movie of true life. The acting was superb. The movie had enough action to keep it moving. The plot had me on the edge of my seat since I didn't know the actual outcome of the game. I was really into it so that means it was well done.

Best movie since Eastwoods Grand Torino. Marvelous tale of courage, leadership and self sacrifice. Eastwood never let's us forget that his characters are human. To say that this movie is about Rugby is the same as saying that Ben Hur is about Chariot Racing. Morgan Freeman in the performance of a lifetime.
