Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are as great if not a better movie match as, Newman and Redford. Their characters and personalites compliment each other to create a complicated dependent relationship that works.
This interpretation of Doyles' characters gave me further insight and understanding. Dr. Watson is given depth and human flaws that allows one to understand that not only did Holmes need Watson but, the good doctor also needed Holmes.
I hope there is more to come!

A real treat to watch and gives a great homage to Sir Doyle. Robert Downey looks great shirtless, too. Too bad that the sexy Jude Law was full clothed the entire time.

A lot of fun, and mostly very well done. The movie manages to remain reasonably true to Conan Doyle's tales, borrowing from several of his best stories, while adding enough action and CGI for the younger set to stay interested. Wonderful banter and wit between Law and Downey.
Sperficial representation of Holmes' drug useage and seclusion when inactive, perhap because it parallels Downey's real life dramas, Holmes opiated seclusions are portrayed in an easily exited manner, with Downey emerging bright eyed and bushy tailed. CGI is awesome in the earlier parts of movie, but falls short at the climax, which in itself is unoriginal, and the set looks like a cheaply produced version of the rest of the movie. Budget Overuns???

From the opening seen to the last, Guy Ritchie, has built this adventure as one of the best movies of the year.
It hits you, the movie goer, at several levels! The base plot feed by well working intertwined sub plots and amazing visuals build a story that even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud to see.
Tie all this to the superb acting of this wonderful cast, Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Eddie Marsaanand you have a modern classic.
I will warn you that seeing this film only once is not enough!
I see OSCAR in this films future

the movie was amazing! i didnt get to see the beginning though, because movie tickets was horrible and the movie started at 1:45 and not 2:45. i wasn't sent an email or anything about the movie being changed. they need to cooperate better with rave if they are going to sell their tickets, but beside that. i got there just as the movie title showed and the rest of the movie from there was amazing. if your interested in detective like movies and Holmes then you'll be interested in this. i cant find the words to describe it because it was that cool and it was just so interesting

My son and I went to this movie and both of us enjoyed it thoroughly. There was a lot of action, and the storyline moved along nicely. Even the slow parts had their place. The British accents were a bit tough to understand at some points, so I'm sure we missed some things. Overall, I'd go see it again, and I'll get it when it comes out on DVD

I really enjoyed Sherlock Holmes. The dialogue was smart and laced with sarcastic humor, which is something I always appreciate in a film or book; but I will say that the actors mastered the British accents perhaps a little too well--I had a hard time understanding them sometimes and would laugh late or miss the joke entirely! The action and story line were good and an interesting affect employed well by Director Guy Ritchie that let you leap into the characters head and view his thought processes made solving the crime fun.

This was a really good movie!! A little strange to begin with.....but after about 5 minutes, I realized where the movie was going. Costumes were great! Holmes did more of the 'scientifc' things that I remembered Watson doing in the books, but it was overall a really well made movie! Looking forward to the sequel soon........

I enjoyed this movie—I did not however, love this movie. The pacing is slow at the beginning and when it picks up the pace is overwhelming to the story line. This makes the movie seem unbalanced at times and awkward. I felt the story line was sacrificed in the pursuit of creating action. The action sequences are classic Guy Ritchie—intricate, heart pounding, and explosive. But when you lose the thread of the story the action is just there; not adding to the complete telling of the story. SO, this is a good movie…just not a great one.

This was exactly what I expected from the previews. It was pure fun. This isn't Basil Rathbone's Holmes. Downey made the character his own and the interplay between Downey and Jude Law was perfect. We had a great time and if they do a sequel we will see it too. The criticism I've heard from my friends was mostly because they went with their minds already made up about what it "should be"

This was a good movie but left a little too much to be desired at the end. It was a dark movie but the plot was a dark one so I am not sure it could have been changed much. It didn't follow in the path of traditional Holmes movies but it was filled with action and was funny at times. The biggest disappointment was the ending which clearly left the impression that a sequel is coming. The ending was anti climatic and I would rather this movie have a satisfactory ending before they start setting up the sequel.

A very good action flick....Iron Man does Sherlock. Basil Rathbone this isn't, as Downey & Law played Sherlock & Watson as master fighters. Brawn as opposed to Brain.

Having grown up on the more cerebral Sherlock portrayed by Basil Rathbone, I found the emphasis on action in Guy Ritchie's film overbearing. Also, I found the movie a bit too long and believe that about 30 - 40 minutes could have been shaved from the script. Not enough time was devoted to how "elementary" everything was to Holmes. Overall, I was a bit disappointed.

I never got bored watching this movie; every part was entertaining. The portrayal of the time period was excellent. The characters had great senses of humor which created good comic relief to the tense atmosphere. Although complicated, the plot was well thought out wasy to follow.

Nicely done story filled with adventure and mystery to solve. Holmes is a little more modern and probably out of the "norm" for the Holmes in our history books -- but RDJ did a good job with the character and I certainly would be interested in a sequal. I give this one TWO thumbs up!

TV's House and Wilson. That's the chemistry set-up for Robert Downey, Jr., and Jude Law. Just like Wilson is to House, this Dr. Watson is driven to distraction worrying about his eccentric friend, who abuses substances, struggles with obscure psychological demons, and generally gives the finger to every representative of order and seemliness in society and government. But, like House, Holmes is some sort of savant who can solve riddles that baffle ordinary mortals. And however derivative the concept might be, it works brilliantly. Both anti-heroes strain credulity, but both actors dare us not to fall for them, outraged yet captivated, just like Wilson and Watson.

This movie was enlightening and was directed extremely well. The plot kept your attention and the movie moved along from scene to scene in a logical progressive state. In order to grasp the concepts the movie goer needed to pay attention due to many different plots happening at the same time. Overall a B+ movie rating.

Although nontraditional, the portrayal of Holmes and Watson in this movie is largely consistent with the original novels and stories, and sheds a really interesting and entertaining light on the men and their relationship. The character of the relationship between Holmes and Irene Adler ("The Woman," as he called her) is a contemporary twist, but not uninteresting. The introduction of a mystic society in the latter half of the film seems a little goofy, but is made somewhat more plausible in the denoument. Generally excellent performances, and good atmospherics, particularly the rather seedy feel of Victorian London.
