I will admit that I am a comic nerd and that this movie was highly anticipated for me and every other comic nerd I know. I took the day off and went to the first showing on opening day. That being said, comic nerds have a tendency to be very particular about how our beloved comics are portrayed in live action. We can see and pick apart every little error of the movie maker, and this one had more than a few errors.
So for me to say that this is one of the best superhero movies that I have ever seen is a big deal. The buildup of the individual characters from their own movies, before trying to have the team dynamic was inspired. The clash of egos in the beginning of the movie was outstanding, the acting, especially Scarlett Johansson’s terror of the Hulk, despite her rough assassin exterior is excellent; combined with Mark Ruffalo as mild mannered Dr. Banner/Hulk are the best representations so far in recent movies history no offense to two previous incarnations of the character.
The casting of Jackson as Fury was a point of comic one liners for a lot of comic nerds, “I’m tired of all these … on my mother effin’… you get the idea. However he is a forceful actor and brings it to life for Fury; who has seen more than his share of hell on earth if you know Nick Fury from the Marvel universe and not just the one shot shorts at the end of the previous movies.
Director Joss Whedon adds a bit of campy, comic book humor to the mix, which absolutely SHOULD be there. It would be in the comic books, so it should be in the movie. Beyond that; however, the movie is intense, and while it could be twice as long and still have a hard time containing the awesome-ness of it, it also needs the comedic aspect to remind you that it is entertainment. Because, if you are anything like me, you’ll get caught up in the telling of the story; because it is that good.
If you want to hear the bad I could go in to the Giant-man/ Wasp arguments, I could mention that Renner’s Hawkeye was way more serious than his comic book counterpart, Chris Evans and the Marvel cross over issues, the lack of other marvel heroes, but I am not going to.
The Avengers movie stands on its own, like a Hulk pounding his chest and daring anyone to put it down. As most of the critics have been all over, from luke warm, to hot, to ice cold over this movie (no twitter fit over this review) Feel sorry for high paid critics who can’t enjoy a movie, and who are more often telling me what I should see when they dislike a move, than when they do.
Remember that your movie going experience should entertain and transport you to another world where your car payment isn’t due or the deck doesn’t need a powerwash. Get lost and enjoy yourself for 2hrs and 22 glorious minutes.

This movie was perfectly balanced, Joss Whedon is a genius. All the heroes got their hero moments and clashed at times. Felt like a true comic book movie. This is probably the hardest of films to get right, and he nailed it. So f*****g amazing: top line actors, story, graphics, director. Plus The Hulk finally got portrayed perfect, Mark Ruffalo is Bruce banner!

With Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America all being 2 hour previews for The Avengers, the movie pays off greatly. Even though it had problems with character motivation, pathos and deep messages (a la its box office competition on July 20th) I wouldn't be lying if I said the second and third act kicked so much ass. It's a great roller coaster ride at the movies and a great way to kick off the summer. Be sure to stay until the very end of the credits.

Will the Avengers garner any Oscar nominations for acting? Well, no....probably not. But if you've seen any or especially all of the previous Marvel films related to the Avengers franchise (the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, or Thor), and enjoyed them, you will absolutely LOVE this movie. Like most of the Marvel movies, there are a few nods to the rabid fans and hints of things to come. However, even for the uninitiated the details of each characters back story becomes apparent - though not entirely divulged - you'll have to watch the previous movies for that. All in all, this is one of those summer movies, where you'll leave the theater smiling and wishing you had more!

4-1/2 our of 5 stars! What a blast! Hysterical at times, lots of exciting action with incredible visuals. The action got a tad monotonous near the end which made me drop the rating to a 4 (wish that 4-1/2 was available!).
The superheroes are uber cool and I LOVE the intelligent, wry humor and presentation by the Hulk actor. Iron Man is obnoxious and hysterical and Hawkeye intriguing. Wish we saw more of him as a good guy! Captain America -- yay! Black Widow was a great female lead and the scene with her talking with Loki --- love, love, love how that worked out.
Pepper Pots was useless and I am not sure why she was part of this movie. She was reduced to a shallow bimbo kind of role - not the intelligent and organized female counterpart from Iron Man movies. Disappointed!
Watch for the Stan Lee cameo, see a hint to a future movie at the end and then stay after the credits for an amusing bit. The Soundgarden track is worth staying for anyway!

First, we didn't see the 3D version, even though the listings for the theater we saw the film in, listed that version for tickets. That said, I recommend this film to anyone who loved superhero comics as a kid. Full of snarky dialogue, awesome special effects, and nicely fleshed out characters, The Avengers is easily one of the top three superhero movies, EVER. I think Jeremy Renner could be my new fave action hero actor (he was in Ghost Protocol this year, too!)
Due to the 'tone' of the film, I don't know that you can ask if it's, "better than The Dark Knight?"--they are very different films, and each one ranks in the top three, for different reasons.
Every character kicks ass! ScarJo has a marvelous turn as Black Widow and --seriously--needs her own movie. Now. Ruffalo as Banner/Hulk also needs his own reboot of the franchise. (Sorry, Ed Norton!)
The movie is almost 2.5 hours long, but be sure to stay after the credits for not one, but two extra scenes! One follows the first set of credits; one follows the longer set of credits that comes after that first scene. I tried to tell the droves of people leaving the theater that there was another scene, but very very few stayed for it LOL

I thought this movie was great, but there were still a few minor things that I thought it lacked. Viewers would probably agree that this film was hyped up to be more of an action flick, yet, with a great story to it. Granted, the movie does have a great balance between the story and its action, it seemed as if there just wasn't enough of both as anticipated. I would give this film 3.5 to 4 stars.

This movie was so good, it's taking every ounce of my willpower not to lapse into an all-out caplocks rant. The dialog is amazing, the action scenes fresh and snappy, the plotline fits together perfectly. It crackles with wit and heart, and for anyone like me who's been waiting for its release since it first became a thing, this movie fails to disappoint in any way. Definitely going to see it again. Literally nothing I'd change about it.

This was a good movie that fortunately lived up to the hype. There's tons of action in this movie but what interests me the most is the dialogue, humor, and interplay between the characters. We understand more about these superheroes through their conflicts and gain an understanding that although they are possess above average talents- they still encounter the same challenges & emotional pain the average human being does. In this sense, the nature of these superheroes are very human. On another note- The Incredible Hulk really showed up for this movie and altogether The Avengers proves to be a comic-book movie adaptation triumph... Good job to the director, Marvel entertainment & plot writers!

Excellent movie. From what I had been reading online, everyone was saying that Iron Man steals the show. I disagree. Hulk stole the show!!!!! I knew Stark/IM was going to be his normal witty/cocky self. They even gave Hawkeye and Black Widow bigger roles than I thought they were. I also though they were going to try and cram a bunch of each superhero's back story into the plot, but they didn't. Great cast, great movie. I will have to go see it one more time this weekend.

Non stop action and humor. First movie I have been to in a long time that didn't have any objectionable language or dialogue. The characters were strong and the action was intense with great nuggets of humor tucked in around every corner. This is a movie that I will definitely pay to see again and maybe again after that. I can't wait for the dvd this is a must have movie for everyone.

Us comicbook geeks couldn't wait to get our hands on this movie, the culmination of all the others and just like meeting your favorite movie star in person, it turns out to be disappointing.
It has long been said that the DC world has more resonance that Marvel, that Batman Superman and the like are deeper than the heroes from Marvel World. this movie proves that. As Batman has gone where no other super hero has gone before, Marvel lives in a cardboard castle where the only king is an very angry green man.
Joss Whedon is no Chris Nolan and Steve Rogers is no Bruce Wayne the failing of this movie is on both sides of the camera. Fun? No Funny at times. Exciting? No just loud and tricky. Even the villains are borrowed from better movies.
Sam Jackson had gone to Twitter to defend his wooden acting and old man movement but he can't. The Avengers is just what AO Scott says it is: No fun.

I'm sure if Walt Disney was alive today, he would be very proud of The Avengers! It's a perfect superhero movie for the kids and it'll probably rake in lots of dough for the studio.
Considering all the hype that surrounded this flic before it opened, I was expecting a little more. And without a central character, it was hard for me to emotionally connect with any one hero. That said, and I'd prefer not to whine, the fight scenes and action sequences were off-the-chain! Not just heroes against villians but heroes versus heroesl
The entire cast was AWESOME! Scarlett Johansson was a total FOX! With all the testosterone flying around, she definately put in the estrogen that balanced out the team! Mark Ruffalo is probably the BEST Dr.Banner/ Hulk to date! His performance was gripping! And Robert Downey Jr. was a real riot! His scenes and lines were simply hilarious! While Samuel L. Jackson took the token part and gave him strength and conviction!
The Avengers is a fun culmination of the solo comic book heroes we've seen to date on the big screen! I can't wait to see Marvel's The Black Panther and Luke Cage make their motion picture debut as well!
Pros well paced, great actors

Honestly, with some direction that Hollywood takes now with films, I was apprehensive about seeing the Avengers, but then also I was intrigued because I have been a comic book geek kid now since I could remember. The story in my opinion for the movie wasn't completely strong, but on the same token, the action in the movie made up for it. It felt like a pride moment honestly as a comic book fan to see all the Avengers standing together in the battle sequences, very very moving. There was frequent use of cheesy one-liners, but to someone like me I think it kind of made the movie just a little bit more. All in all, if you love comics, you love geeky/nerdy things, seriously, go see this flick.

I was riveted from the beginning. All the actors were soooo good that I didn't know which one to drool over. Captain America was so earnest & inspiring, Stark/Iron Man was so witty & arrogant, Thor was just gorgeous, Loki was villianous & cruel, the Black Widow was courageous & cunning, but the Hulk stole the show I think. Love Mark. Saw it at the midnight show & want to see it again asap.
