Great piece of animation from Japan which is delightful to both young and old. I viewed the movie with a seven year old and she was entranced the entire time. I was equally amazed by the reactions of several other children in the theater reacting to the epressions of emotions conveyed through the eyes of the characters.Anime at its best.

If you have not seen a Miyazaki movie, or only like computer animation you need to see this. Miyazaki's color palette fills the screen with all the great characters and creatures he creates. The underwater creatures are amazing! This story is a different take on the little mermaid fable. Children will love it and adults will wish they were children again, if only to life in the realm of Miyazaki. You also get little touch of environmentalism, which is always part of Miyazaki's love for the earth. If you don't want to go to theater, I would recommend Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Monoke, Castle in the Sky, and/or Spirited Away, until this dvd comes out. These will prepare you for the greatness that is Miyazaki.

During the first underwater scene I heard my 10 year old son whisper, "Beautiful!" with wonder in his voice. An interesting film that led to a lot of discussion with my 7 year old about how Ponyo's father wasn't evil, he was a caring parent. It was easy for him to see the wizard as "mean" or "bad guy" and I had to keep giving examples of things like how when we don't allow the kids to go play outside in a thunderstorm, it isn't because we are mean or bad. It's because we care and have to teach limits and judgment.

I was skeptical of this movie at first because of the screen shots I had seen on the internet. Since Miyazaki created so many great movies, I went ahead and bought tickets and drove 4 hours to the nearest theater playing it anyway. I am so glad I did, and I can't wait for the DVD release. The pics I saw did not do the art in this movie justice. The artistic style of this movie is different from his other movies, but still wonderful. It was creative, beautiful, and original. Plus, the story and characters are amazing as usual. Go see this movie.

I am a huge miyazaki fan, and ponyo was just as excellent as I thought it would be. The characters, the plot, and art was beautifully done, and it is such a cute movie. It is a heartwarming movie that sends a message about pollution and how we need to take care of our world. I would reccomend this movie to anyone who wants to laugh, cry, and watch a a great masterpiece unfold.

Miyazaki really outdid himself this time. I loved Ponyo, her charcter really grew on me and sosuke too. Although her dad tried to prevent them being together i love him for his seriousness and unitnetional hilariousness. I would defiantly recommend this movie to anyone. Even my anticartoon/anime friend could find no fault in this movie ! 5/5 star rating from me^_^

You can never go wrong with a Miyazaki movie, and Ponyo is no exception. Ponyo's character is just so energetic and fun loving that she will always put a smile on your face with everything she does. My 6 year old daughter is a big fan of Studio Ghibli's films for younger kids, and recognized the art from the commercials. I'd say this film leans more towards "Panda! Go Panda!" than "Kiki's Delivery Service". There's tension, but not enough to make little ones uncomfortable. The plot isn't heavy, and the only issue I saw was the ambiguity of Ponyo's father. He still seemed scary to a few of the kids I was in the theater with. We'll probably go again; my daughter has been begging all week.

It's a lovely film that takes the bones of Andersen's "Little Mermaid" plot and gives them very familiar Miyazaki flesh. It's not his best movie, but it's probably his sweetest and sunniest story -- a throwback to Kiki and Totoro and Porco Rosso. It will make a great first Miyazaki film for youngsters for decades to come, and it's touching and funny (if a bit lightweight) for adults. My entire family enjoyed it a lot, and we all laughed out loud several times.

I took my 4 and 6 year old children to see this and we are still singing the theme song the morning after. It was a sweet story and there were many times where my kids laughed out loud during the film. The look of the film is beautiful and the plot took many unexpected turns that kept the adults entertained as well. While my children did not find anything scary, there was a younger child near us who got upset a few times (goldfish appearing dead, etc.) so I wouldn't bring a child younger than 4.

My children and I are long-time fans of Hayazaki's films, and Ponyo did not disappoint.
For those not familiar with these types of films, this movie probably seems like a cross between The Little Mermaid and Finding Nemo. Though some of the themes may be similar, there is much more to Ponyo.
Since my children are about the same age as the children in the movie, I was probably affected as a father while I watched. It pulled at me the same as My Neighbor Totoro.
For American audiences wanting something different but wonderful, especially if you have children, I highly suggest you check out Ponyo.

Another masterpiece from Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki. Simple story about a magical goldfish that wants to be a real girl. This movie is a real treat, and watching made me want to live in this world, where magic exists, where there is true love, the elderly are respected, people respect nature. Adults will love it and so will kids. The theater I saw it in was full and everyone loved it, ages 2 to 80 in the crowd. GIve this one a shot and seek it out. For two hours you will be in a world that is truly amazing.

The East really have a different perspective on LIFE, which can totally be seen in this delightful film. They really know how to creatively capture the fundemental nature of people and their dreams.
The visuals are quite cinematic and extraordinarily colorful. While the story is rich and heart warming.
The English voice cast give life and spirit to these cartoon characters. And Liem Nesson's voice acting is very impressive.
Ponyo braught out the kid in me. Take the little ones and let it bring out the kid in YOU!

As a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki I was not surprised by the excellent colors and visual effects of the Japanese animation that is legendary. It was also a fantastic adaption of the Hans Christian Anderson tale of "The Little Mermaid" but now told of a fish. It was endearing and funny. The mother's driving was hilarious. The father of Ponyo or Hildagarde was wonderful, her mother was beautiful, huge and awesome. The movie was spectacular and great for the whole family. Ignore the comments of the unenlightened--this is a beautiful and even soulful tale that will get under your skin and stay with you--not a common thing these days.
There is a gentleness and subtlety to this film that makes it a genuine relief from the overwrought, overstimulating movies we've been stuck with.
It is also refreshing that Disney (or more likely, Lasseter) is presenting us with something that has a different style and a different manner of storytelling than the Disney style that has also become the style for every other studio in town.
In the past, I never quite cottoned on to the Miyazaki genre, but this one really got to me. And my kids. And from what I could tell, the rest of the theatre.

I don't know why there are these complaints about the movie. Only ignorant people with ignorant minds would underappreciate the works of someone different. Ponyo is truly a great film, aside to Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle. Someone stated that Ponyo was evil. Nothing was evil. I only saw a father protecting his daughter. Don't we all over react sometimes when it comes to the safety of our children.
My three year old son and seven year old nephew love/d this film. From the reviews, you have to have an open mind away from the typical cartoons/animations we have here in the United States. I'm actually glad to see something for a change. DON'T WATCH THIS FILM IF YOU ARE NARROWED MINDED AND NOT WILLING TO ACCEPT VARIETY !!

If you are already fans of Miyazaki you won't be disappointed. This film is enchantingly cute! The animation is bright and traditional. An overall wonderful and adorable film for all.
The story is of a little goldfish who sneaks away from home and tries to become human after meeting a young boy. Her father tries everything he can to keep her as a goldfish, as her willful nature rises so does her powers. In order to keep the balance of nature she and the young boy face a life long choice.
Note: For those who are expecting the inspirations of The Little Mermaid, do not think Disney, the connections are based from the original tale written by Hans Christian Anderson.

I took my 6 and 8 year old kids to see this last night and we all LOVED it. It's a refreshing change of pace from American films that predictably shy away from the "real people" we parents are. This is a magical, fun, adorable movie with lots of heart.

Another great film from Hayao Miyazaki. Not his best, but it's hard to live up to his other films.The right wing political garbage found in other reviews here is REALLY pathetic. Miyazaki is above IGNORANT people. Ponyo is a delight and comments about it being "scary" are really unfounded - Lion King would be considered far scarier - there is no "true" antagonist in the film (Ponyo's dad is still her dad!). This might be above the heads of anyone under 5. Young Adult/Teen fans of Miyazaki (he has universal appeal) should be warned this is very much 'kiddier' than previous outputs, so be prepared for a very young audience. If you haven't seen a Miyazaki movie or your child hasn't, you really don't know what you're missing.
