I have seen Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and many others. So I have to say that I did love it. But, it felt too short... YES, I KNOW is an 1hr 40min. But, the adventure between Ponyo and Sasuke could have had more adventure before reaching the end. But, the movie as a hall was GREAT. Fantasy like no other, very diferent from Disney, ofcourse. Very sweet and a beautiful message.

I brought children ranging in age from 5 to almost 11. All 3 girls enjoyed the movie immensely. My 5-year-old sometimes becomes restless during movies, but this one held her attention. It is a very sweet story with a nice message and it is appropriate for children of all ages.

this was a wonderful, cute movie to watch with my 4 year old son. Great for all ages. I really liked the way the mom dealt with being mad at dad. It was more real life and showed that anger is a natural part of being human, but DOESNT mean that they dont love one another. This movie has a lot of lessons in it that even the older kids and grown-ups dcould stand to learn today.

Filled with magic, humor, and that inocent kid's style of love for friends and family, Ponyo is a very warm and fun movie. My whole family really loved it, and we laughed a lot. I recomend it to anyone - especially families with younger children. My kids are ages 5 and 7.

I loved this film, as did my 7 year old and my 52-year-old friend. It was very different from what Americans are used to in animation, and it had a surreal feel. At times I was reminded of Fantasia, but with the exception of that film, it didn't seem Disneyish or cloying.

I'm sure kids will like it: The zany, hand-drawn style of Miyazaki is a refreshing change from all the CGI animation of late. But compared to Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Spirited Away," "Ponyo" can't compete. The plot’s nothing more than a retelling of "The Little Mermaid" with 5-year-olds. There is no sense of any real danger or obstacle that must be overcome. When the great moment of choice comes, it flies by so fast with absolutely no indication of its significance that I was left wondering what just happened. I have the distinct impression that something got left on the cutting-room floor in order to make it palatable to an American audience who saw the Disney label on it and won't accept any real challenge to their children.

I went with my Granddaughter (8) and two neighbor kids (6 and 4). They all seemed entralled and generally understood the story. I was impressed since this was not a "traditional Mickey Mouse graphics" type show. Well done!

The film makes you feel young and innocent without insulting your knowledge of how the world works. Like all other Miyasaki films, the film feels pure and has a child like story telling without the classic bad guys. It's a good movie to watch whether you are a child, a teen, or an adult. I was truly disappointed with this movie.... :( I have watched all of Miyazaki's movies with great joy over and over... Totoro being my favorite.. But Ponyo lacked something.. It just did not draw my attention and maybe because it was the voices in English.... I stayed so my kids could watch it and truthfully they were also disappointed..... We expected better from Hayao Miyazaki.... No real excitement or great adventure... just alot of colors and imagination... But don't get me wrong! I love Hayao Miyazaki..... I will be there for his next adventure!!

I took my four-year-old who is a big fan of the Ice Age series and the pixar films. Ponyo is a wonderfully animated, captivating film but probably better for a slightly-older crowd. At least two times, my son wanted to go home, scared by the expressionless father figure and his use of waves as a his army. A similar aged child in the row in front felt the same way. By the end, my son just asked "is it over now?", clearly ready to hit the road. When we got home, he didn't recap the film to his mother as he does with his favorites.
As an adult, I was fascinated by the animation and the uniqueness of the style (I haven't seen any other Miyazaka films), but I think it may be better for 5 or 6 year olds and up.

The first thing that hits you is the visual beauty of the opening frames, and the lovely soundtrack. Since we are so conditioned to American animation productions, this film really catches one off guard, and then pulls you in with its pure childish simplicity. Yet the story itself is intriguing and suspenseful. My three grandchildren, who have been immersed in Disney and Pixar, were captivated by this movie. I was enchanted and uplifted! Definitely worth seeing for all ages of children and adults, except for the most hardened of gun-blazing thrill-busters.

I saw this with my wife. It is slightly more childish than some other Miyazaki movies, but it the movie was full of moments that made us both smile, filled with the wonderful magic that is a Miyazaki film. The ending was rather abrupt, but nonetheless, we both loved it.

From the start, it is very colorful. The story line is very basic and easy to understand for children of all ages, it's a very innocent, sweet movie. I was a little socked and more than disappointed at the extemely abrupt ending. I guess I just wanted more, although the story ended in the traditional Happy way, I was expecting a Happily ever after/years later...type scene for the end. Or maybe I just liked it so much that I didn't want it to end, but my son was nearly speachless throught the whole thing, very engaged.I thought the end was so cute when they have the different little images that the kids drew and they give them their little spotlight.

Being a very big fan of Studio Ghibli (I own all of their movies) and Miyazaki I was incredibly excited to see that Ponyo was coming out.
The movie itself is breathtakingly beautiful, and the storyline was delightful. However, I felt that the actors they chose to play the characters were pretty awful and ultimately took away a lot of the movie's potential.
I'm looking forward to the DvD release so I can rewatch it with the Japanese voice actors instead, I know in my heart that they will do a better job than the English actors.

Is Ponyo the best animated film of the year? The Academy will have to make that hard choice at Oscar time. But to me, the verdict is in: Ponyo is perfect.
With this film Hayao Miyazaki continues his valiant stand to preserve traditional animation. Ponyo is a love letter to the art form, with some of the most spectacular animation ever drawn. One scene during the typhoon brings tears to my eyes every time thanks to its sheer beauty. It is fantastic artistry of the first order, an incredible 170,000+ drawings by the greatest animators in the world. This is true art, and anyone moved by beauty will certainly be moved by Ponyo.
I've seen it twice already, and will be back for a third time. I can't recommend it enough. Go go Ponyo!

I am a big fan of Studio Ghibli's work, but I have unfortunately found a film that I'm not terribly pleased with. The story premise is great, but the execution lacks, in my opinion. A story is very flat without something to give it an edge of importance, and the complete lack of any real danger or possibility of loss to the characters steals all of the importance of the plot. I also found some of the animation to be a bit too stylistically simple for my tastes. Small children may appreciate the film, but the studio's typical ability to appeal to both children and adults didn't quite make it for me this time. Fear not, I'll be attending their next film without hesitation.

I have no idea where all of the positive reviews are coming from on this one.
The story is simplisitc and disjointed. In order to enjoy this film, you'll need a short-term memory impairment, because there is no way any believable person would have the reactions portrayed. My seven year-old could (and often does) tell a better, more compelling story.
Visually, it's strictly Saturday morning cartoon quality. This movie is just bad on every dimension. Give it a miss.

Now being a fan of his movie's, this one sure falls in line with his others....Animation was cute, and the plot was good....It's a bit hard to follow, however the kiddies loved it...cute song at the end.

My husband and I brought our 4 year old daughter to see this movie and it did not disappoint. From the beginning to end it had wonderful unusual twists unlike most predictable American films. I was surprised to see that Disney played a role in bringing it to the US since it featured two parent families and no untimely deaths. These are rare in most Disney animated films. Even for adults, this film is 5 stars.

For those who have not seen this Japanese-style animation called Anime, a note: It is not just that the figures are drawn differently, Anime is just strange. There was long periods where you had to wonder who the characters were and what on earth they were doing. I still have no idea WHAT or WHO Ponyo's parents were supposed to be. I left the movie feeling like I had just experienced an LSD trip. I would have left the movie, but for the fact that my kids were enjoying it. So it at least gave them a day of entertainment. there wasn't anything patricularly objectionable, unless you don't want to expose your kids to Eastern mysticism themes. But I'd tell parents to wait for DVD so they can go get a root canal while the kids are watching!
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I find out translation of Ponyo is really well-considered. Did you notice Sosuke called his kindergarden teacher "Sensei"? Actually, if he called her "Teacher" or "Ms xxxx", it sounds very strange for me. Sensei is Sensei this time! I think transation team make great efforts to pick up the best word.
Honestly, the movie is perfect except one thing. It is "Miyazaki"'s movie, but it looks "too Disney" movie for me. Needless to say, the movie has made based on "Little mermaid" storty, but my Miyazaki's movie is not Disney. I hope next movie will have more Miyazaki's nature.

My 27 month old Daughter sat through the entire movie including the previews - a whopping 2 whole hours. She couldn't even sit through an hour of "UP". This is an outstanding film, we were all transfixed - every child and adult in the theatre was mesmerized. I recommend seeing it at the Tysons Corner Center Movie theatre if you have small kids. The seats are fixed so little behinds don't fall through, and the cushions are more comfortable. The armrests go up which make it easy for little ones to get comfy and settle in.
