While the actors are brilliantly convincing and the story is a realistic one, I can't say I enjoyed the experience. I'm not one for the "home video" filming technique, whatever that's called. I'll just compare it to the way the Blair Witch Project was filmed. It’s hard to watch, if you’re motion sensitive. For me, the wedding was too long, with too much music and too long of a stretch without dialogue. As expected, the ending lacked closure, but I was just ready for the film to be over.

I was really disappointed by this film. First of all, the way the film was shot made me nauseous. I found it to be very boring and pointless. It felt like an extended music video with a bit of drama throw in that felt forced.

Thought the director's choice to film as if an authentic wedding video was inspired; however, my two companions and I all became nauseous watching the shaky footage. The emotional rawness revealed the truth of interacting with a recovering addict. This truth was, perhaps, a little too close to home as I, too, made the decision to invite a recovering addict friend to stand up to my wedding and he threatened to ruin it on several occasions in ways similar to those depicted in this movie. If for no other reason, I would recommend seeing this movie to witness the scene between the mother and the character, Kym. In addition, the music is exceptional but the wedding entertainment scenes could have used some editing.

I was disappointed. I blame its shortcomings more on the writing than any one actor (or Demme himself). Jenny Lumet's script has a lot going for it, but it can get a little trite. I felt more than once that it was too contrived in the way it introduced revealing moments for certain characters. That being said, there is a tremendous sense of the authentic, this group of family and friends with their music and merriment (and conflict) have many shining moments that do resound. Hathaway sells a complicated part fairly well, shining in the presence of Debra Winger, but other times Hathaway seems to falter navigating through the maze of her character.

Rachel Getting Married is a half brilliant, half baked movie with some great performances (Bill Irwin, Rosemarie Dewitt) and some that are just performances (Anne Hathaway). The movie is quite moving at times, and at other times, seems like a combination of someone's wedding video or personal family diary. The great, great Jonathan Demme's hallmarks of great music, fine performances and an attention to nuance, as well as an egalitarian view of the world are on full display. Take 10 minutes out of the movie, put the camera on a tripod once in a while, and give me more closure at the end, and I would say it was an unqualified success.

Before seeing this film, I considered Anne Hathaway an ingenue---well she has arrived. The complex tapestry of this film not only stimulates the heart, but it enlivens the mind. There is a palpable tenderness and an irrevocable sense of loss. Despite all this----it's beautiful. The denouement startles a bit---and there are haunting moments. Each character including the names and the lesser known actors are perfectly cast. I remember the guy who played Rachel's husband from Jump Tomorrow---what a mensch.

This is NOT a comedy but it's a pretty good drama with complex characters, and dramatic tension. Debra Winger's role is small but she is perfect. What's nifty about the film is the matter of factness with which it deals with the nuptials of a white woman and a black man. This family has issues, but race is not one of them. A bit like a Robert Altman film, and I've read that this was intentional.

Demme and Lumet have created one of the finest films of the 21st century. The script is extraordinary. Every line, rather every word, is intended. The filming and POV is so critical to the depth of each and every character. There wasn't an emotion I didn't experience. Anne Hathaway was incredible; raw and riveting. She has raised the bar for other actors. It's good to see Debra Winger back again. Regardless of how "small" her performance appears her presence couldn't have been larger; especially since I felt this film was essentially about her character. Kudos to a great ensemble cast and to fine and smart film making.

I hated the camera work. It made me crazy. The character's dialogue was well-written but the characters themselves were cliches. The part about Kym having killed her little brother was totally predictable. When the plate suddenly appeared with the little bro.'s name on it while the father was stacking the dishes, I walked out of the movie. I really didn't care if I saw the end. Anne Hathaway and the woman who played her sister were very good, and it was wonderful to see Debra Winger again.

My niece went to a pre-opening screening and loved the film. So, we went and were not disappointed. It is an unusual film in that it almost feels like a documentary, yet is not. I have a problem with Bill Irwin whom I have seen in person as well as on film. He is too *clownish* for my taste.I did my best to tolerate him. There are some enormous intricacies very subtly woven into the plot. It is a quiet movie that carries a big underlying punch and will, no doubt, garner Anne Hathaway an Oscar nomination. She does an outstanding job. Debra Winger, whom I never valued much, brings real intensity to the few scenes in which she appears.

I laughed & I cried during this extremely emotional and touching film. Anne Hathaway was incredible in this movie and I would be shocked if she didn't receive an oscar nomination. This movie touched my core and I would highly recommend it.

Rachel getting married suffers from the title. One would never know what an intimately complex movie this is by the title. Anne Hathaway WAS Kym. She WAS a recovering addict. Anyone familiar with addiction and recovery in the slightest will recognize the complicated relationships and the difficulties on all sides. I haven't seen Debra Winger in years, but her facial expressions captured the mother perfectly. This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I'm not the type of person to say that lightly and I've never written a review before. A word to Jonathan Demme - what's up with the music? Half of that would have been plenty! That was the only downside.
