This movie definitely had its low points, but the high points were very high. Great acting by all, Anne Hathaway gives a stellar performance like nothing she's ever done before. I also thoroughly enjoyed Rosemarie DeWitt.
I do agree that the handheld camera work lent itself to some serious queasiness and a slight headache. It could have definitely been minimized. There were also a few scenes that went on way too long.
This movie is definitely not for everyone, but if you are looking for strong performances and a great character study, please consider Rachel Getting Married.

The is the worst movie I have ever watched, without walking out! I kept waiting for a storyline, but there is none. It was simply a documentary of a interracial wedding. It was not funny, not inventive, not amusing, not interesting, not anything worth 5 bucks, even at a discounted rate.

As a mental health professional and "civilian" interested in human drama, i found the movie quite affecting and painful (NOT comedic). Elements were over the top (WAY too cool with all the musician friends; why the random-seeming (but gorgeous) Indian themed wedding, etc), but the pain of family emotional failures, loss and substance abuse rang true. The role of this mother was well-written and played. I agree with one of the professional reviews about the bathing scene being one of the best. Liking this movies takes a willingness to be open to the psychologocal and emotional subtleties. It is not a wedding comedy. perhaps those who were negative about it here were expecting "my big, fat hip, suburban wedding". This ain't it.

Have you ever been forced to watch someone's wedding video? well if you have and you enjoyed the experience then go see Rachel Getting Married. I felt like i was the date of one of the bridesmaids and i was trapped in the house of this dysfunctional family. There were so many elements in this movie. there were too many cooks in the writing kitchen. I mean they used every idea including the kitchen sink. and the interracial, buddhist wedding attended by vegas show girls is just the tip of the ice berg.

Damn, I've read the bad reviews and just laugh. The movie was absolutely terrific, solid acting by all - you'll be impressed. The genre:Comedy - I have no idea why it is in that genre as there are only a few laughable moments but the movie sure dows have it all. If nothing else, neat pre-wedding party. It really is close to home - for some - subject of the main character could be anything - theme would be the same and I think what bothers the negative reviewers is that this movie hits cloe to 'anyone's home. Just go see it and do NOT plan on seeing a comedy - completely miscategorized.

The user reviews I have read have been overall negative, but I thought the movie was well-done. The intention was to make people a little uncomfortable, for certain things to be a somewhat drawn out, because that is what we feel when we are really with our own families in holiday circumstances. The performances were strong and moving, while remaining subtle and true. It all worked together to provide a relatable, sometimes painful, sometimes beautiful, insight into family dynamics.

This was the best movie I'd seen in a long time. loved the characters, and many of them were "characters". just the right mix of darkness and joy. The wedding party was terrific and wish I had been invited. great ensemble work, loved the toasts at the rehersal dinner. Being from a non-musical family, really enjoyed seeing all those creative types interacting in a "regular" setting. addiction is tough, no matter what social class has extensive effects on all associates.

a couple of scenes were too long and boring. they were like family movies of a whole wedding weekend. fine if you know the players. otherwise, who cares? i actually liked the end better than the beginning. the music was too much, too soon and got on my nerves. This is a weak-kneed, thoroughly self-indulgent movie about a rather well-off white Conn. family whose ungrateful, undisciplined, out-of-control daughter (who killed her brother) apparently thinks she's worthy of some respect and attention no matter her transgressions. The simpering father can't or won't set this gal straight (oh, that would be paternalism, though). And then everyone lolls about in this thoroughly phony, implausible multiculti masquerade. Perhaps the most regrettable part of the movie? That rehab girl wasted a perfectly good Mercedes wagon trying to off herself (her failure is yet another symbol of the impotence of self-disabled youths growing up in a self-hating culture). In short, fantastically off base and worthless.

Painful, over acted, predictible and just bad. The shooting style made Balir Witch look calm. STOP MOVING THE CAMERAS. It's not fun. It's not going to win an Oscar if the camera's make me dizzy. What I look for in a film lately is to be completely pulled in so I forget my own life and this one did it totally. As everyone else said, it bogs down at the end, some of it seemed just a showcase for music that didn't really fit. But I loved it, identified with characters,especially Ann Hathaway, but everyone else too, was totally absorbed and happy while seeing it.

I really enjoyed Anne's portrayal of this troubled young woman. Her mother's detachment, masking a hidden rage and underlying guilt was thought provoking. The reception was very multicultural and interesting but too long.

I really enjoyed this film. Yes, it was disturbing and thought provoking, but it left me examining the themes, music, character backgrounds, and their signficance days after. It was not what you want to see when you think of a wedding, but it was very indicative of real life and how messy and complicated it is....especially around weddings, holidays, etc. Not everything is seen through rose tinted glasses. I applaud the film for showing us that and making viewers think.

If you can get by the somewhat unrealistic family scenario you are treated to a very realistic view of a troubled young woman and her family relationships. A very heavy story told in a way that makes you feel you are there. Even to the point of wanting to get up and leave during the wedding reception. The wedding reception scene seemed to go on for ever without adding to the story line. Overall a very good movie about a heavy subject.

Very disappointing--Hyped as comedy-drama though it is anything but. Ann Hathaway does a very good job of playing against her image. Otherwise I think that Demme loaded the dice in too many ways--the portrayal, the devastating background story, the complete range of nationalities, creeds and religions, the camera view, etc. Having said all that, it is not a bad movie but be ready for "heavy".

I hated the movie. I agree with another reviewer that the hand-held home movie style was nauseating and annoying. It was self-indulgent and Jonathan Demme definitely needed an editor both for story and film. Anne Hathaway's acting was good but Bill Irwin was ridiculous and totally over the top. I thought the acting was great but I hated the "home movie" style of filming. If that is supposed to be artful or progressive, I guess I just don't "get it." At times I felt nauseous, at other times I wanted to leave. The movie was painful to watch and a complete bore. However, it was wonderful seeing Debra Winger again.

This movie is a horrible piece of garbage. It is the only film I have ever walked out of. First, it is a complete rip-off (from the filmation technique to the premise ) of Danish director Thomas Vinterburg's far superior 1998 film "The Celebration". Second, it is filmed with wobbly hand-held cameras to give the effect of "home movies". The problem is it also has the effect of physically nauseating the viewer. When I walked out there was a group of other viewers who had left ill with one woman even vomiting. Lastly, it lurches from one scene of unrealistic melodrama to another. The premises are at times so unrealistic, unnatural and awkward that you would laugh if it wasn't so goddarn awful. Truly represhensible.

Great acting and screenplay overcompensate for unnecessary hand-held camera work in this exceptionally wise film, easily Demme's best since "Silence of the Lambs." Hathaway lives up to the hype with a superb performance, while Rosemary Dewitt is excellent as Rachel, and Debra Winger just about steals the film in the small, riveting characterization as their mother. Highly recommended.

Although there are a few comic moments in this film, this is most definitely NOT a comedy. This is a powerful, emotional, haunting movie that was cast pefectly and shot in a way that brings the viewer right to the party. We are sitting at the table, on the sofa, in the room with these characters. Every emotion is displayed so perfectly that the lift of an eyebrow or the pause between words is meaningful. It is a stunning film so complex that it is worth a second or third viewing just to recognize all the nuances there are to savor. Anne Hathaway: unbelievable. Debra Winger: amazing. Don't miss this film. It will take your breath away. But do NOT go if you are looking for a light comedy some Saturday night. Not even close!

This film is worth seeing, if just for Anne Hathaway's performance. I could have done without the 20 minutes of wedding music, which made the film drag. But otherwise, Demme's directing was smart. The movie makes you think about who's really responsible for life's tragedies and when apologies are meaningful. Worth seeing, just don't expect a light comedy.
