What a disappointment--- great premise, great cast, - and all that potential adds up to a basically flat movie.
Like Bruce Almighty, we watch the main character be given god-like powers, only to squander them away in an unappealing display of self-indulgent self-pity.
There is a bizarre sub-plot in the movie about genetics, where you are considered a "loser" if you don't have the perfect genetic code. This "master race" subplot isn't handled with a comic touch, and it weighs the movie down.
So what is this movie... A comment on society? An anti-religious screed? A warning about genetic planning? What it's NOT is consistently funny. The Invention of Lying is a disappointment, and that's the truth.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

If you've seen the trailer for this movie, then you have seen the best and only funny scene in the movie. It was as if someone had a funny idea for a movie, and then said "that will be funny for 1 minute, but what do for the other 143?" I found it to be very slow and predictable. I can not recommend this movie to anyone with a brain.

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Since the reviews are so mixed, I'll reveal that we are middle aged women in case it's a gender, generational thing... We found it hilarious from beginning to end. It raised some very interesting questions related to the ability to imagine "what isn't". Compassion, empathy, even self-awareness seem to be predicated on being able to trust something other than what other people say and to sense what is beyond it. Ricky Gervais is wonderful. Jennifer Garner's character, while superficial in so many ways, is interesting as she tries to figure out why she loves being with a man that doesn't have the right genetic material for her future kids.

First you've got Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner & a first rate supporting cast aided & abetted by a few classic cameo roles. Then you've got a concept which, judging from the PREVIEWS, makes this look like it's going to be a non-stop laugh fest. The exchanges between Ricky & Tina Fey and the restaurant scene toward the beginning of the movie are classic. Then things start to go haywire; the novelty of this fantasy world wears out quickly, and to save it from self-implosion, it seems the directors decide to get maudlin and go for the sentimentality ploy, which, IMHO, fails spectacularly. How sad. In the hands of more talented, conscientious-minded people, this could have been one consistently, screamingly-funny movie.

This concept could have been interesting in different hands. Instead, it's a very shallow movie about a very shallow society that doesn't have any sense of courtesy. The idea of not being able to lie is secondary to the shallowness and lack of courtesy. In addition, the movie is highly insulting to Judaism and Christianity. Though I am a Christian, I would be just as insulted if they treated Mohammed this way. Don't waste your money, people, and don't encourage the making of this type of movie.

I feel this movie was a complete waste of money. First of all it reminded me of a 1970's low budget film with bad actors. Then they start out with inappropriate s.exual comments for the audience it draws, mostly teens. It has a total athiestic base and strives to make people who believe in heaven, God and Jesus out to be stupid for their belief, what's with that? Why is that so important? Would I recommend this movie to others, absolutely not, it's totally stupid from start to finish.

This movie is being advertised as a comedy. It's not. It's sad, it's depressing, it's a miserable example of wasted effort by a group of actors that have a lot more talent than the writers.
This movie was a mistake! It shouldn't have ever been made. I feel like I'm damaged from going to a movie, and that shouldn't happen to anyone! :-(

Okay, this isn't the best movie ever, not even close. The concept was good, and I agree that Jennifer Garner's character was shallow. What I didn't care for was her facel expressions, that really bothered me. My teenagers wanted to see it, and I told them that they wouldn't get much of the humor, and as for the rest of the humor it wasn't too good. Can't see very many teenagers enjoying this movie.

The concept behind this movie was great. A world where no one lies and one guy figures out how which gives him many choices for the future. The movie's heart was in the right place, but the writing--and comedy--just was not strong enough to carry the premise through. That was disappointing because it seemed like it could've been a classic like "Groundhog's Day" if only it had been executed better.

I can't believe this movie is getting some bad reviews on here! I thought it was perfect -- great premise, witty & cheeky in that British way at times, sweet & heartfelt at others. I love Ricky Gervais & Jennifer Garner, plus all the other actors that cameo throughout the movie (there's a lot more stars in this than you think!) The pizza box scene is HILARIOUS! I'm def. glad I saw this :)

cute premise, everyone has to tell the truth, lying hasn't been invented. one guy figures out how to lie. which is sort of interesting but the movie tries to take on waaaaay too much, getting into religion, bringing back a very tired Jesus stereotype, etc. and it didn't end well. i love jennifer garner but her character was totally shallow and spineless. for the main character mark (gervais) to be in love with her and supposedly have this ability to see through to the heart of her is just silly, she gives no indication that she is a sweet caring person like he insists. so that part was really unrealistic too. to summarize... cute concept, poor execution, weak and trite ending. not worth it. rent it on netflix if anything.

I would be lying if I say that "The Invention of Lying" was any good. This was one of the strangest movies I have ever seen. I am extremely disappointed with how this movie was made. It appeared to be really low budget. It wasn't obvious what state, city or even country the movie was based in.
"The Invention of Lying" is about a man named Mark (Ricky Gervais) who lives in a world where everyone tells the whole truth at all times and in most cases is extremely blunt, telling a lie is totally out of the question. After losing his job, Mark stumbles upon the concept of lying.

The movie has an interesting premise, some mixed theological signals (yeah, I wasn't expecting that out of a comedy) and the actors themselves executed their roles well. But the whole didn't seem to measure up to the sum of its parts (lots of grins but very few belly laughs)

The first few minutes were clever as people expressed their true thoughts about their lives and situations, but it became stale very quickly. The snoring from the fellow behind me was more comical than the film. Very disappointed that someone with Gervais'' talent couldn't do better. Someone like Adam Sandler would have knocked the lights out with this plot line.

The movie was funny, a little low brow at times but thats not a bad thing either. And yes, if some one is looking to have a controversy over beliefs they could make one out of a particular scene. However maybe the makers of this movie were poking fun of how we as humans act on our beliefs more than actually just having faith in a greater being.
The movie also has it's sweet momments and it was enjoyable, with a great cast. Academy award no, nice entertaining movie, definately.

Sadly disappointing. It started out....stupid. Very little laughter throughout the whole movie. It was insulting that they (Hollywood) once again, intentionally mocked people who believe in God and 'know' that there is a Heaven. Yet, setting the insult aside, it was still a poorly made movie & poor script. At times it seemed as if it were a low budget movie from the 70's. I would NOT recommend it, (I'd be embarrassed to admit it) & would NOT EVER desire to see it again. Just as you can't judge a book by it's cover...You can't believe a movie will be good just because of the Trailer. I've learned my lesson - I promise to read reviews and/or listen to recommendations from friends.
