To begin, I am a huge fan of Ricky Gervais and his supporting cast in this film. I went in with high expectations and left horribly disappointed. First off, if you have any sort of religious conviction, even the weakest sense, it's one of the most offensive films I've ever seen. Aside from religious issues, I found every actor incredibly stiff and dull. So because they tell the truth they behave incredibly stilted? That was absurd. The entire film was poorly thought out with far too many holes in the plot to make it an interesting and entertaining film.

This movie has some funny moments, lots of great actors, but just did not reach the comedy level that I was expecting. There were some good moments, and some boring times. I would say wait until it comes out on DVD. I would recommend this movie if there is nothing quality showing and you need something to do.

This movie had one or two smile invoking comments; however, the over all theme of this movie was nearly pointless. It told of how lying affects others but would have been better as a blog than a movie. This movie starts out VERY slow....and stays that way. There is NO action or worthwhile parts. The Invention of Lying was on of those movies where the commercials were the best parts. I would NOT recommend this movie to my worst enemy. I wonder why this movie was even allowed in theaters. I bet the actors themselves do not have copies of this movie. Thus, this movie was horrible and should have never been seen by the PAYING public.

With such a great cast and the genius of Ricky Gervais in hand, I was expecting a smash of laughs. What I got was a smattering. Some seriously funny MOMENTS, but not enough to string together a full-length film. I enjoyed the attempts at explaining WHAT lying is when it is incomprehensible, and that could have been supremely interesting. I enjoyed Jennifer Garner's performance more than expected, and Gervais a little less. Great idea - lack of content. I left the theatre thinking "ho hum."

The movie had such potential with several talented actors and cameos, however the occassional one liner was not enough to leave me satisfied that I paid movie theater price for these tickets. There were some funny parts, but overall it was not the movie I was routing for.

One cannot lie and must say what's on his mind. Unsolicited remarks are the human condition. However, giving an uninterrupted speech would be impossible. The mind wanders. Acting would exist only if one acts as himself to now
But if one was allowed to avoid lies with silence, content and humour would be compromised. It's lack of realism and therefore my ability to fantasize weighs more than its humour or thought provoking potential. God is recent and already church weddings exist? I liked the common sense approach to theology but they left out the obvious and accurate historical social answer to the dilemma of blaming God for the evil of man-kind. The devil. Way too many unattended details for my enjoyment.

This movie was (1) a mockery of Christianity (2) boring (3) an insult to one's intelligence (4) a waste of time and money and (5) a mockery of Christianity - I can't stress that enough. For a supposed comedy, the audience was the quietest I've ever witnessed; oh, there was a chuckle here and there but mostly yawns and a lot of squirming. Don't bother seeing it in the theatre; don't rent or buy it when it's out (which probably won't be long).

As many reviewers have implied, there are two separate movies within "The Invention of Lying." I very much enjoyed the first one, the extremely imaginative comedy part. But, although the film buff in me wishes the director had stuck with that, as it would have made for a more consistent and unique movie, I did like the second, more serious, sensitive and honest part as well. And I am very impressed with Ricky Gervais. The movie is worth seeing.

This movie was deeply annoying because it was supposed to be a funny movie and instead the few truly amusing moments were eclipsed by it's preachy plot. I don't mind questioning religion but i don't pay nine dollars to go to a movie where i am told that religion is made up to comfort us. If you like movies that lure you in under the guise of comedy and then deliver a "deep" message you may/may not agree with then this is a movie for you.

This movie was ok. I agree that it is a chick flick disguised as a comedy. I am a person of faith, but no, I was not offended. I laughed with everyone else and as loud. It was predictable because it was the typical romantic comedy plot in a more blunt way of addressing the issues. Funny to see with your friends. Don't waste a date night. (and don't take kids, 13 or otherwise)

Without spoiling the movie, people of faith will most likely be offended the main idea of this movie. If you are a fan of Gervais, whom I think is brilliant, you'll enjoy this very much. It takes a bit of the Jim Carey movie, "Liar, Liar" , and uses it to point the irrationality of religious belief. It is very funny in parts, and not so in others, but on the whole, I had a lot of laughs.

The Invention of Lying can be broken into 3 parts. The first is the weirdest, funniest & best part. This is where we are introduced to a world where no one can tell a lie. What is on our minds we blurt out to others without regard for feelings or repercussion. Very funny stuff. Here the film is a 5 star movie. Part two we find the main protagonist trying to cope with his new-found ability to lie. There are negative consequences to lying and keeping lies in place (duh). This is less funny but there are still a few chuckles. 3 stars. Finally we get to part three. This is the sad end to an original tale where we witness an effort to cram the originality of the idea into a standard romantic-comedy template. 1 star. Average overall - 3 stars.

It was a good movie but I thought it was a total chick flick disguised as a comedy. The first half was super funny but after the "man in the sky" was exposed then it turned into a kind of boring movie. There were a few funny parts in the second half but it was missing something. This is pretty bad considering I am a girl and usually like chick flicks. I would watch it again and tell my friends to watch it, but I wouldn't recommend spending the money to watch it in the theatres.

Having loved Ricky Gervais in Ghostown my husband and i couldn't wait to see this film. With Tina Fey and other wonderful actors it was sure to be funny. We were so disappointed . The writing was dreadful. Although one might expect some cheesy lines in a movie like this.... it was full of stinky cheese. There was a ton of silence in our theater when one would have expected some uproarious laughter. Don't bother seeing this one. Rent Ghostown!

Ricky Gervais was the same character he is in everything - awkward, middle aged, insecure but hilarious. Like he said on Inside the Actors Studio, "Woody Allen, same character. Laurel and Hardy, same character. Nobody better. There's nobody better." David Brandt, the guy from The Extras, his character in this movie - all the same. Laugh out loud funny. I might get it on DVD just to catch all the little nuances.

This movie was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a good while. While most of the lines sound sarcastic in nature, the actors do an amazing job (surprisingly) at convincing me that they have never heard a lie before. I will say that this movie is not necessarily a must see in theaters movie, but it is definitely worth watching at least once, even as a rental.

This movie was awful, insulting, offensive and poorly acted. I cannot believe any of these people voluntarily did this movie!!! To create a "10 commandments" on pizza boxes, to depict the actor as Jesus on the cross in a church...and then as Jesus himself- where he is told that he looks awful- I cannot begin to say how un-funny, un-imaginative and un-entertaining this movie really was! This film has a clever (if somewhat controversial) central theme, and proved to be more entertaining than I first expected. The early scenes playing out the 'brutal honesty' are refreshingly funny, and Gervais's character is well observed.
The cast is impressive, with Jennifer Garner, Tina Fey & Rob Lowe. Fans will also spot the brief appearances by Stephen Merchant & "Barry from Eastenders" (both as seen on "Extras" with Gervais).
For those who take their faith seriously & are easily offended by films which poke fun at it's absurdities, you would be advised to choose something else!

Was jennifer Garner on another planet when she said she would be in this? I kept falling asleep . The people leaving the theater were dumbfounded they sat thru this. I am extremely disapointed in this film!

Although it was nice to see the cast on screen and they certainly did their part to try and pull off this film, it just didn't happen. The film was boring. It completely lacked a good story line and took forever to get to the point. I would not recommend going to this movie. Just wait until it comes out on DVD if you really want to see it.

You're better off not wasting your money on this mediocre 100-minute joke. I was expecting so much more with the long list of hilarious actors who participate in this movie. However, they're just going through the motions and they're not working with a good script. Wait for cable, which is money you're going to spend anyway, rather than spending additional money on this one.

I enjoyed this movie. I truly enjoyed the whole cast. Rick Gervais is a hoot! I liked the concept of the movie. It even made me think that I am so glad that most of us aren't so in your face truthful. I definitely would recommend this movie.

If the goal of any movie is to entertain you, then this one definitely reached it. Ricky Gervais is great. The list of known castmembers extends far beyond the main characters and their well-timed cameo appearances make the scenes that they are in very special. If you are looking for a movie that has the answer for everything, then go see something else. This movie is endearing and worth its 100 minutes that it runs.
