'The Invention of Lying' goes against the status quo, as I must with my review. This is not a slapstick, rolling in the isles comedy. However, it does have a large cast of familiar comedic actors, fresh humor, pathos, and deep meaning beneath the surface. It questions what is really important in life, in a humorous manner. I found it very good, but if you are looking for mindless fun, this movie is not for you.

I enjoyed this little fairy tale, not least because it was filmed in Lowell, MA, where I live, and I wander across the screen in the fuzzy background of one scene. I enjoyed watching Ricky Gervais' character, a man of limited imagination in a world ditto, grappling with Chaplinesque results with the immense power to change the world he had found.
The other actors had much harder rows to hoe, but they presented their tunnel-vision characters pretty well.

this was such a strange film that for me, couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a comedy or taken seriously. Trouble is, the film was promoted almost entirely on the basis of its humour and most of these bits were shown in the film commercials. As a whole the film felt very emotionless and flat even though quite thought provoking at times. I love Ricky Gervais and he was great in both the "moses" pizza box scene but also, so tender with his dying mother. For me, he is a genius but I would recommend Ghost town everytime over this film - shame, i had such high hopes for this film.

This was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. It had a cute premise and some very likable actors/actresses, but it was not funny. I can't remember the last time I had to force myself to stay awake during a movie, but I nodded several times during this one. I disliked it way before the religion bashing began, which completely ruined any ounce of like I had for the movie. I was tempted to leave 1/2 way through, but I stayed, hoping it would get better......it never did!

I really enjoyed this movie, there were some very funny bits, but it was much more than a comedy. It explores the essential questions of faith and human relations in a new way. For thinking and questioning individuals this film provides great entertainment and much to think about. It is not for anyone who doesn't have a sense of humour about their religious beliefs. I can see why some of the reviewers were offended by the treatment of faith in this film, but for the open-minded it's a great experience. In addtion, it shows the true brilliance of Ricky Gervais who's social commentary is always spot-on without a hint of irony or snark.

We love Ricky Gervais, but this movie never lived up to the hype. Very few laughs and painfully slow moving. It was never able to achieve a rhythm that grabbed the audience's imagination as evidenced by a "quiet" theater when there should have been hysterical laughter. Really disappointing. This had to be the worst movie I have seen in a long time. No real plot. I think they could have done alot with this movie, but just didn't. Seems like the producers really had issues when they wrote this one. the main topic was profane itself( I can't say what because you cant use the word here) and the rest was all about why someone would not want to have relations with someone and that person trying to have a life. Excellent movie that works on a number of levels. Enjoyable just for Gervais' humor and a sweet performance by Garner. Also intriguing for the themes and questions it raises about truth, kindness, love, free will, societal conformance, and religion/faith. After seeing Informant.................well, anything is much better than that. This film won't be up for any awards but it's not all that bad. Jennifer finds out what is really important. Ricky is interestingly different.
