I saw the play DOUBT on Broadway in '05, just before it won the best play Tony award. The film was, by and large, as thought-provoking and challenging as the stage play. The acting was superlative by all; Streep, Hoffman, and Amy Adams were superb, and Viola Davis as the mother of the altar boy was terrifically good! However, I thought the director (who also wrote it) made some odd directorial choices that pulled my attention away from the action of the film, and made me think about the choice, instead of the film. His writing might be better served by letting someone else direct his work.
Still, it's great stuff for those who don't want just action or pap when they go to see a film.

With all the elements in play, great acting, writing, technical essentials and directing, it's hard to go wrong. As most movies seem a bit or more that bit too long, this one actually felt like it could have easily included a few more scenes to be completely satisfying. The ending is a bit ambiguous but that's ok in this case. Streep and Hoffman shine. The kids are well cast. Gripping and moving.

If you want to decide whether you want to see this film, read the "Critics Review". It is 100% on the money. Can't say much more than that.
All of the actors were superb including the children. Loved the use of the weather to enhance the plot. A very serious film, but not a tear jerker as so many are. A film that makes you think and stays with you long after leaving the theatre.

Highly recommend this movie for people who appreciate good acting and don't expect their movies tied into a neat, little bundle at the end. It had the best acting across the board of any movie I've seen lately; but Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman we brilliant. We had just seen Meryl Streep in "Mama Mia" two days earlier, and I had to keep reminding myself that this was the same woman. When you walk out of the theater, you'll appreciate how it got its title and you'll feel a little "doubt".

Having gone to a Catholic grade school in that era for 8 years, I found much of this to be true: The strictness of some nuns, the reverence to the priest, priests and their cronies smoking and drinking, and most of all - the "cover-up" and hypocrisy. The priest feeling that he was "above the law" and could get away with anything because he was a Man of God and the nuns were subservient to him. No nudity or foul language, however more appealing to adults from this era who can relate to it. Most excellent acting by Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams!

The story line was intriguing and very controversial. The casting was superb as was the acting. The interaction between Streep and Seymour was riveting. Streep nailed this character, at first she seems unlikable and just rigid. As the movie progresses she makes you laugh and see her actions were based on truly good good intentions that were not misdirected. ( or WERE they?)

Doubt was a nice way to spend a holiday evening. Superbly acted. Streep and Hoffman were great. Both will receive Oscar nominations. I saw the play on Broadway -- its more natural home. The story was expanded by Shanley for the big screen. Well worth the price of admission.

Streep's just the best! It takes courage to play a dowdied-down role in a habit without (visible) makeup. And Amy Adams! I didn't recognize her at first until, "Enchanted!" popped in my mind.. The people who nominated this film for so many Golden Globe awards were right. I saw the movie with my daughter, and when we left, I asked, "Did you think he was guilty?" She said yes. I said no. The ambiguity was pefectly rendered by Streep--whose compicated, multi-faceted character defies any stereotype--as well as by Hoffman, who refuses to give anything away...but is it because of his guilt, or because of his superior standing in the chain of command to Streep? Nothing here was predictable (unless you had read it in advance or seen the play). Both of us were on the edges of our chairs the entire time. I have seldom seen a more skillfully crafted piece of cinema. See it.

We loved this movie and would suggest it to our friends and family. In fact we already have. Meryl Streep was just excellent in it. It's not too often that Hollywood produces a movie which has a strong message to it but this one has and shows what accusing someone without facts can do to both that person and yourself in the process. I cannot say enough about the superb acting Streep delivers in this performance. This is not a "did he do it" movie when you strip away the history and stereotypes of the priesthood. Rather it is how one person's perceptions and inability to consider other possibilities consume her. Hoffman delivers as well, exceptional in his role without giving many hints to his innocence or guilt. The tension between both characters is believable and powerful. Oscar is going to love this movie and so should movie goers.

The only reason to see this movie is Meryl Streep. If you want to see one of the best actors of our time in a fantastic role check her out. If you're looking for a really good movie with an intriguing story, skip it. Everything is very forced; from Hoffman's opening "sermon" about doubt to the terrible "storm brewing" during another incredibly contrived scene. I'm not real sure what the rave reviews on here saw but, this movie is terribly overrated....and I love Phillip Seymour Hoffman. The most doubt about this flick is why all the nominations; except Streep's.

On the stage, please...not on the screen. This movie was slower than cold molasses. I can appreciate the performances, they did the very best they could with what they were given. The screenplay was ponderous, and the characters were flat and unnatural. The plot was predictable and poorly developed. I don't see this as "one of the best pictures of the year." But, to be fair, I rarely agree with most movie-goers.

First, the positive notes: the subject matter is thought provoking, and the acting and screenplay are mostly excellent (except Amy Adams). The movie is not so much the "so called" abuse by the priest, but the interpretation of events by individuals that are colored by social and personal filters. The downside: the social constraints expressed are interpreted with a "modern" sensibility-case in point-no nun, no matter how much we would like we to by today's standards, would have been able to influence change in the 1960's Catholic Church. One last bone to pick, I can't stand when the dramatic points are all punctuated by storms and when a gloomy film has nothing but gloomy weather and darkness in it....to obvious.
