Incredible acting, wonderful script. The movie depicts the struggle that can come from being true to your convictions in the face of uncertainty. It also show the pain that can result as a consequence for all parties involved. Not a feel good movie but definitely thought provoking.

Anyone with an ounce of comment sense , wouldn't get caught up in such a story. What this movie needed is some sense of reality! I just couldn't get passed the idea that a priest and a women of God wouldn't know scriptural law. Instead run around being guided by a feeling and a sixth sense.

Deep, absorbing, intense. A study of characters that are not what they seem. Meryl Streep joins Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and Barbara Stanwyk showcasing the range and depth of her talent. I thought I had seen her best in " The Devil Wears Prada". She is like a chamelion from role to role. Philip Seymour Hoffman had me right up to the end. I too believed he was the one who would save the parish. How Subtle. He never disappoints in any role he takes on. For a movie with no special effects, no fast cars, loose women or a hip sound track, it was hands down one of the best movies I will see this new year.

An astonishing movie. Father Flynn feels just like abuser priests I've encountered. But wait...
Sister Aloysius is a total hero - not for spotting the "obviously" abusive priest. I could feel her holding together her will as she sees the gaps in her evidence, and the horrible no-win trade-off she faces. She could not risk that child's welfare on the 'presumption of innocence.'
You can feel every thought and doubt in Sister James, but if you watch Sister Aloysius she is just as conflicted, but she holds herself together with will, prayer and resignation.
This script is amazing - often blunt, often with a startlingly revealing nuance of phrasing.
Best Actress for Meryl Streep (finally!).

This was such a powerful movie. There were scenes that I couldn't breath and goosebumps ran up my spine. There were Dejavu moments that resonated with me because I had those same nuns back in the 60's as well. In 1964 I was in 4th grade at a school very much like the one in the movie. The performance by each of the major characters were incredible . Viola Davis, for the smaller part that she had, gave an outstanding, wonderful and heart wrenching performance. I can't say enough god things about this movie. You will relate on all levels.

The acting was outstanding. Viola Davis's acting in her supporting role (Mrs. Miller) was especially noteworthy. Meryl Streep (Sister Aloysius) was first rate, and both Philip Seymour Hoffman (Father Flynn) and Amy Adams (Sister James) were excellent. However, the theme of the movie was a little trite, and the ending was unsatisfying. Also, there was insufficient depth to the two major characters -- Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn.

The showcase of this film was the collection of powerful performances. The pitched battle of wills between this nun and priest were underscored by theme of the continuum between real doubt and certainty, and the appearance of doubt and certainty. The most compelling performance was that of Viola Davis as a mother who loves her son and wishes for acceptance for her son, but in a way that would surprise you. The other characters were woefully underutilized, and there were big empty holes where they were concerned, making it hard to care about them. I can see it being brilliant on the stage, but the lack of peripheral action makes it very thin for the screen, especially after one has witnessed the beautiful, chaotic Slumdog Millionaire.

I liked this movie. In the end it leaves you scratching your head. Because it's the bent of your mind as to what actually happened in the story.
The characters were played superbly. The antagonist, Streep and Hoffman, showed the intensity of their parts.
I have never heard such a clear definition of gossip as given in Hoffman's sermon.
Over all I give it 5 stars for the dramatic acting keeping the audience waiting for the answer to the their questions. What happened?

I thought Meryl Street did an excellent job of acting. However, I did not like the movie because the assumption that someone is guilty just because of a belief is wrong in American Society.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Totally captivating from start to finish. An astonishing performance from Meryl Streep. In a world populated by so much mindless theater - this movie stands proudly in a rare class of thought-provoking films. Take some friends who not superficial and make time for lively discussion afterward. Everyone will take away a different insight.

This is a superb movie. Meryl Streep plays the character of Sister Aloysius to perfection and leaves one with a far greater respect for the old fashioned nuns who ran iron fisted schools with hearts of love (quite a paradox!). Philip Seymour Hoffman plays one of those smooth talking, good preaching, "compassionate" priests who were out to reform the Church while doing great harm to weakest members of their flocks. The conflict and the "doubt" that arises throughout the movie is riveting. This is one of those very rare movies that deserves a "10"
