Thumbs up: Costumes, Location shots, Marion Cotillard as Billie, Jason Clarke as Red, and the venerable Thompson machine gun which is loud, incredibly destructive, and will put a hole in you that you can throw a cat through.
Thumbs sideways: Depp and Bale. Both were adequate but seemed so subdued at times that you wonder if they left the theater before you did.
Thumbs down: Not Mann's best effort. Disjointed script. If I didn't already know the story, I'd have a hard time following this movie. Long winded at times: could have done without the J. Edgar scenes.
Synopsis: Eye-catching, but in the end needs better continuity and better editing. Wait for the DVD.

This was one of the most boring movies that could have been made on this subject . None of the characters was developed to the degree that you cared about any of them - Not Depp's Dillinger, nor Bales' hard-nosed G-man. And all of the supporting cast either over- or under-played their parts - all to the detriment of the look and feel of the film. Why do we care about Depp's gf when he keeps fooling around on her? Why is FBI Director, J Edgar Hoover played like a fop? There really wasn't even a good explanation of why the FBI was focusing on Dillinger rather than all the other bad guys. I liked the basic story, but there was no cohesion to the side-stories - and no reason to care.

if you take out the skills of "the big movie" made by Michale Mann and the star studded cast i am not sure why this movie would be made? About two thirds of the way through this movie the thought occurred to me that I was really enjoying the movie. I was caught up in it without initially being aware of it. This movie was well done. I am not one of those people who ever say a movie is too long because I have not gone to the movie for it to be over quickly. I wanted the movie to be longer. I feel that this movie will get Oscar consideration. It had a realism not captured in most movies. I liked it.

This was an average movie. The acting (especially Johnny Depp) was very good, look and feel of the movie was beautifully authentic and it stuck pretty close to what really happened. The problem was that it was hamstrung by what really happened... which apparently didn't translate to screen as well as one might have thought. This seems to be a problem for a lot of biopics. It was too slow and there were periods where I almost lost interest completely. I'd recommend it for someone who is a Johnny Depp or period piece fan. Otherwise, wait for it to show on HBO.

Only fair. Actress who played Billie was fantastic in the Edith Piaf story and not so good in this one. She was trying too hard not to have an accent. It was hard to keep the good guys and the bad guys straight. The script was not very good either. Lots of shoot 'em up scenes, so if you car only about action and don't really care about the depth of the story, you might enjoy this one.

Beautiful actors, clothes, however, the movie was slow after the first 4 minutes. The script was poorly written and did not tie the story together in a manner that kept you awake. I had no belief in the characters as there was no empathy for any of them. You could even notice the imperfections in the editing as the scenes did not fit. All in all I wanted to leave after the first 15 minutes.

The movie was okay. Definitely had much higher expectations and it felt too choppy and incomplete. Johnny Depp's character was not developed enough and it just felt way too long. More attention was given to his realationship with Billie than on John Dillinger the person. I would recommend this movie to my friends but I would suggest to wait until it comes out on DVD, it's not that good to go and pay theatre prices.

I guess I went into the movie expecting more. I am a huge Johnny Depp fan. There was not enough character identification for me. I didn't know who Baby Face Nelson was until the end. I never knew if it was the bad guys getting shot or the cops/FBI. All the characters looked alike. I'd recommend as a rental where you can rewind if necessary.

Mind-numbingly long movie experience that leaves you feeling flat the entire duration. Sure, there are Tommy gun fights every 10 minutes, but that is the most exciting thing you will see in this movie. Christian Bale did not flesh out his character as a conflicted director of the Chicago office well at all - very disappointing one there. The best thing about this Public Enemies is Johnny Depp, who did a masterful job with John Dillinger - even walking into the FBI 'Dillinger squad' office at one point in the movie, and the awesome vintage cars.

I'm a fan of Johnny Depp & Christian Bale but this was an average film about a gangster in the 30's that has been done many times before without anything new. It would be a good video rental and in itself was a good 'movie'. This should not have been the anticipated 4th of July blockbuster we have become used to and maybe it would be received better.

This was by far the darkest portrail of John Dillinger that I have seen. It was probably the closest to the truth that I've seen. I used to live in Crown Point, IN where he escaped from the jail. It was good to see that they used the actual jail in the movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Johnny Depp is terrific and it just made me interested in finding out more about John Dillinger. The only complaint about the movie was that the gun fire was so very loud and realistic it got to be too much after a while. There sure was a lot of it!
It was an interesting story.

Depp and Bale do very well and Michael Mann created a beautiful epic feel but there really isn't a story here. Bank robber has a girlfriend and is always on the run from the law. Typical Hollywood ending where hardened gangster proves he is only driven by love (no, no, no, it couldn't be money that drives him). And why do I care what happens to Dillinger again? In two and a half hours, Michale Mann kind of forgot to show the audience why we should sympathize with a bank robbing killer.
