Public Enemies has to be one of Johnny Depp's best movies. It was so enjoyable to watch him play a serious role again sans goofy costumes.
Don't get me wrong, I like Johnny in all of his roles (except SpongeBob), but it was nice to see his face.
The movie had just the right amount of action, a superb love interest and for all his on set short comings, Christian Bale was not bad either.
The only thing I was hoping a bit more of was the historical component of how Hoover and the FBI started - but that is only because I enjoy that kind of stuff.
Well worth the money, especially if you do a matinee.

It was an interesting story but the movie was not as good as the previews. This movie is not memorable. You don't feel like you want to see it again. With such a compelling story, it could have been better. Fine acting though.

The close up nature of the filming being displayed on such a large screen, made it hard to focus. I would have preferred to see it at home on a smaller screen. I enjoyed it. It had some slow minutes, but was well worth seeing and I will recommend it.

So SLOW...no one liners from Depp... I would go far enough to say his value in Hollywood just took a step or ten backwards. I was going to leave early but thought there might be a good ending. I am very shok about Johnny Depp's modeling. It has a big different performance from another role which is in Pirates of the Caribbean. I think his role in Public Enimies is a handsome, smart and clever person. Althought he is a robber, he loves his girfriend very much. Finally, it has a sorrowful ending that I could not forget in my mind! I'm glad to recommend this movie to everyone.

I was impressed by the period set/costumes. Depp was wonderful but there was something missing from the story and strength of the script. The 3 of 5 stars is in no way a reflection on Depp. I would've liked to have known more about Dilinger's back story. There was no real connection with his character, accomplices, and significance of 1933. Cotillard= great but the role didn't do her acting ability justice. Bale could've been replaced & they probably would've given the role more conviction. I left wanting more.

Of course I think Johnny Depp was the perfect pick for John Dillinger. Depp is just so talented, I don't think he even realizes how talented he is, that's why I like him so much. It was a great story, a true story. The action was great. The only downside I thought, was that as action filled as it was, it still at times was a bit slow. However, awesome movie and kudos to Depp once again!

The film is more about the development of the FBI and how it came to be as a result of these "public enemies" during the Great Depression. There is no real background given on any of the characters, other than they are gangsters who are the Bureau's most wanted list. It also starts off a bit slow. However, it's worth seeing, as it has a great cast and is well written.

This movie was well shot with great acting but poor story line. I know its based on a true story but if this doesn't make enough story line in the form or character development/drama/twists etc. it just doesn't work.
It was very cold and hard to connect to the characters, not giving the audience enough to relate to. It's visually cool and had good environment to draw you to the era. Also great acting and maybe that's enough for some.
Very long and drawn out for what was uneventful scenes. I kept expecting 'more'. A little pointless in the end.

As a WI resident I was very anxious to see this movie because of all the local filming. Also I am a big Johnny Depp fan. What a major disappointment. I never felt a real connection to any of the characters and I hated all the (often) unnecessary violence. The movie seemed to be just a series of shootouts...one more bloody than the next. This smart gangster movie creates a modern version of a time in America when society was struggling with how to contain the rampant atrocities of criminals and the growth of crime syndicates. Its gritty, tense, unrelenting picture of the descent of John Dillinger and the creation of the FBI is mostly unromanticized and regards the criminals and lawmen with equal clarity. John and his love story are glamorized though his crimes are not. Depp and Bale depict men in the grips of bigger forces than they can control who play the game to it's inevitable end. I highly recommend this film. It belongs in a category of films saying "crime doesn't pay."

I love movies like The Departed, The Good Shepherd, A Beautiful Mind-- so if this strikes a chord with you...
Public Enemies had very little plot development- a redundant game of cat and mouse. Moreover character development was shallow at best.
The one thing I enjoyed about the movie was its well tailored costuming and setting for the time period; visually aesthetic! :)
I expected a lot better for a movie starring Bale and Depp.

Depp delivers one again. Sad, evil, joyous, cautious, dangerous, and trustworthy. He hits on all eight cylinders in the role of John Dillenger. Best guy to his friends, cocky to his enemies, ladies man one at a time, and bank robber extraordinaire! He wasn't over the top, like Sparrow, but focused and intense. At the very least an Oscar nod should be coming his way.

Depp does his usual fantastic job. Nothing over the top, but he really nails the character. I was surprised to find out that the movie was about his relationships, both with his friends and with his girlfriend, but there was more than enough action to keep any guy in the seat. And your girlfriend won't complain!

Thought the movie was long,. it didn't move fast enough. The movie lighting was dark, guess to try and recreate the time.The camera angles sometimes were weird. Johnny Depp was Great. Lots of shoot em up.

Michael Mann has created yet another classic entry in the crime/action/drama genre. The subject and period might be familiar to some, but Mann manages to make "Public Enemies" fresh and unique. Mostly due to the fact that the majority of the film was shot in HD. This brings such a realistic/documentary vibe to the picture. The performances were top notch as expected. Overall, this is probably one of the best films of the summer if not the year.

Sometimes seemed slow moving, but overall a great movie. For kids some blood and guts, and partial nudity, but Johhn Depp played the part very well.
