As we all go through these tough economic times, sometimes people refer to the Great Depression. People out of work and without even food is extreme no matter when it happens. Anyway, I love, love, love J Depp AND C Bale so I would have gone to this pic just because. But I wanted to see what they did with a true story - the beginning of the FBI and heyday of the Depression-era gangsters/American outlaws. This movie ROCKED!! Even bad boys are not just one-sided. I was happy to see these were not cookie-cutter criminals. I loved the characters, the setting, the way the story was told. AND I was glad that there was no gratuitous violence. It WAS there but always appropriate.

Though I believe johnny depp is a great actor, and so he was in this movie, it wasn't enough to help the movie. It wasn't too horrible. I appreciate the fact that it was based on real events/people. My problem is that the movie was slow, drawn out. I felt some scenes were unnecessary because they didn't have a real significance. I would recommend waiting until it's on DVD.

I was so eager to see this movie I went at midnight to catch the first showing. Boy, was I disappointed. It was just a lot of scenes of people driving around in cars. Johnny Depp didn't get a chance to develop the character. It seemed like the director fell in love with his technical ability and forgot that a good movie is a story that makes you care about the characters. At the end of the movie, I didn't feel like I was even acquainted with any of the characters.

The movie is more of a love story than an action packed gangster film. In the movie Dillinger spends most of his time trying to get his love Billy back and be with her. He also spends more time running from the police than he does committing crimes....which is not unlike his real life but not what I expected from this movie. Its worth seeing but perhaps I should have waited till it came out on DVD.

I was expecting a lot from this movie since Michael Mann directed it and two of our most charismatic actors, Johnny Depp and Christian Bale are in it. Alas, however, this turned out to be a bore. For some reason, Mann has not developed either one of his main characters and the actors' natural charisma is untapped due to the script. Only the lovely Marion Cotillard shines as Dillinger's girl friend and even Mann regular Stephen Lang is impressive as a FBI agent determined to nab Dillinger. Compared to John Milius lower budget production on the same subject, this drama lacks the drive and spark that made the other movie more entertaining.

While the sound, lighting and cinematography was exceptional in "Public Enemy" the character development of Dillinger left much to be desired. Was his motivation to rob banks simply to amass money; to show his cunning; for the sport of it; to become a "celebrity" ? Never had a sense from this production what his real motivation was. Johnny Depp's brooding, soulful look was not a look that I would expect to be portrayed from a machine-gun-toting bank robber.

Public Enemies was, on the whole, a bit of a letdown. The acting was generally good but the pacing was off at times (last half particularly) and the action scenes weren't terribly well staged. It had very good production values and the look of the film was fine but the story was a bit episodic and you never got a good feel for why Dillinger did what he did or the character of the man; it was all surface and no depth. It wasn't a terrible movie but I expected more.

I have waited for the movie for several monthes. I love some of movies which were acted by Jonny Depp because I could see something deep in those characters. With such big stars, it was a great disappointment that they really did not get to act. There really was no climax. It seems as if Michael Mann did not use his artistic license on this one. Johnny and Christian are great actors, but their talents were untapped here. I may be wrong, but I blame this all on Michael Mann. Normally a very entertaining director, he must have worked very hard to control and reign in two of the most charismatic actors working today, Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. Somehow both came across as very bland and boring. The only real emotion seemed to come from some of the supporting cast.
All in all not a bad movie, but certainly not what I was expecting given the combination of Michael Mann, Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.

Depp as Dillinger robbed the audience of the price of a ticket. The movie is an uninteresting portrait of a gangster lacking anything that might make him a sympathetic character. Johnny Depp is strangely sans charm in this role and Christian Bale's G-man is so stoic that there is no "fugitive-type" tension in the pursuit of the gangster. The romance in the film doesn't ever sizzle. Nice period feel and look (expect for the heroine's hair which is modern-messy).

Even though the climax and end were inevitable, Public Enemies was a fantastic movie. Mann is a master Director and Depp is the best there is.

The actors, Bale and Depp, were good enough in their respective roles, which is saying a lot given there was no interaction between their characters. I thought this a great gangster movie, I really enjoyed the period costumes, I just wonder if all gangsters got so dressed up to rob banks during the depression. I liked Johnny Depp, I saw a picture of Dillinger, and they made him look like him. His girlfriend in the movie reminded me of the late Natalie Wood, she was very authenic and real, her acting was excellent. I think everyone should go see this movie, but leave the small children at home, because of the violence.

This movie was very good. I didn't really like the ending, I can't stand when one of the sexiest men of all time is lying dead on the floor. It had some really funny parts, however, the bank robbing felt a little repetitive, but probably necessary. It was definitely easy to connect with the film, and I would like to see it again.

I've seen many of Johnny Depp's movies and how well he transforms himself into the character, but for some reason the entire cast 's and Johnny's performance did not include any passion or emotion. The story was good, but the acting was very bland. I went to see this because it was Johnny's movie and I am a fan of his, but this film was a big disappointment,

I had high hopes for this film, but was bitterly disappointed. A major bore, and the camerawork (michael mann thinks he's being creative by using a shaky camera technique) actually made me ill. Terrible from beginning to end. Save your money and your time on this one.

This movie is well designed and keeps you interested. Johnny Depp is a great performer and really shows off his versatility. Some of the characters could have been a little stronger, but overall a very good show.

Good Movie - took the Grandparents, who grew up in that generation, and they loved it. Great period costumes and sets. Great acting. Thought I was right there. SolarDaddy
