I am a fan of Depp, which is mainly why I went. My grandson wanted to see Dillinger, so we went together. We were not disappointed. Depp was outstanding. The action was enthralling. The love interest was just right. The time just rolled by for the two of us . The ending brought a few tears to my eyes, it was so right. Everyone I have talked to, has really liked the movie. Bring on some more like this. My grandson rated it 5 out of 5. He loved it.

Classic cops & robbers chase/shoot out scenes, fantastic camera work...witty acting..so much attention to detail from the sets and locations to the aesthetic of sound design. Eerie and romanticized all in one. Really quite enjoyable to watch on the big screen as a portrayl of the golden age of Chicago gangsters as well as the time leading up to Dillenger's death.

Johnny Depp is why I went and I was not disappointed. The love story was hot. Depp is Dillinger. Technically, the film is perfectly done, Mann's talent is everywhere. The task to take a true story from an era kids can't relate to and give it enough bite for today's BRB audiences... hard to do even for Mann.

We NEVER go to a movie twice, but my husband enjoyed this movie so much that we went back the next night. I'll admit that on first viewing, I thought the movie dragged a bit and it was hard to figure out the supporting characters. But on the following night, I realized what a superb film this was! Depp was outstanding, and Bale's performance was strong, though not his best work. Even though I knew what was going to happen next, I found myself hooked from the beginning. The cinematography may be distracting to some during the action scenes, but stay focused to follow the characters. I would even see this a third time if only to enjoy Depp's stellar performance.

Depp manages to keep his metrosexual cool, plus his smoldering intensity, while playing an aggressive, commanding gangster. He plays him as intelligent and ruthlessly ambitious, rather than as cold blooded and brutal. Cotiliard is too light-weight and ordinarily pretty, to be interesting opposite him. I didnt believe her as a smoldering dark, Menomenie beauty. The role needed a different actress who could do the WI accent. Bale is a lot like his Batman character. The makeup, costumes, cars, soundtrack, and shots of the L create the mood of the old gangster movies well, and the political-economic context of Hoover, Congress, and the depression have a dejavu quality.

We walked out after about 1 1/2 hours of this bore of a film. Sets were interesting. Shooting style of the film was a little wierd, like hand held movies at home. Story and characters were just wooden. Too much tommy guns and not enough interesting story. Went in with high hopes. This is only the 2nd movie that we've walked out of in five years. Spend you money elsewhere.

Going into the movie my husband and I figured I would have my eyes closed and he would love it. But the opposite happened! I thought it was an excellent philosophical examination of the problem of controlling evil - a transparent overlay on our War on Terror." He thought the characters and visuals were flat. The "bad guys" really were a cancer on society but were still human. The "good guys" become less good in their determination to get rid of the bad guys. The good guys wanted to think of themselves as morally and scientfically superior super-heroes but ended up compromising their own values, ending in shame and suicide. We talked about "how to overcome evil" all the way home.

I wanted to like this movie. I had some background on the gangster period of the 30s-40s. I think Depp and Bale are fine actors. But the story never quite gelled together. It was not quite romantic between Depp and Cottiliard; little sense of connection between Depp and Bale. I think we were supposed to recall Mann's movie "Heat" but I never got the hightened sense of the hunt here.

This keeps your attention span. Has a good pace, doesn't take too long to build up like some movies can. The characters are good, a little confusing on the FBI agents. However a good well produced movie. Can't help but notice how Johnny Depp plays his character perfectly showing a very likable and hot persona to the general public of what John Dillinger portrayed.

A few of us went to this movie simply because they shot a majority of it in Wisconsin so we wanted to see what they used. I'm also a huge Depp fan and he did well with what he was given which wasn't much. For the length of the film, the writers could have developed the characters a bit more, but they were pretty one dimensional. I also felt the cinematographer needed a steady cam as it was difficult to focus through a lot of the film. On the upside, Marion Cotillard did an excellent job, and it's always nice to look at Johnny regardless of what he may be given! I'm kind of bummed for him as I thought this would be the one to get him an Oscar. Overall, I expected more from a historical film with such a notorious figure.

A well-done film, mostly historically accurate (visually and factually) with a great cast of supporting actors. Depp reigned in the character a bit, perhaps too restrained in his performance, but provided an insightful glimpse into the rough world of pre-cosa nostra gangsters. This is at best a mediocre movie. It repeats every cliche in the genre, even down to an exact repetition of the female "moral" from Bush Cassidy & The Sundance Kid: "I don't want to watch you die." After 5 minutes, I knew I did not want to watch this movie, either. Lavish sets, the usual jumpy editing and cinematography, expensive historical recreations of Depression-era Chicago, and two A-list actors telephoning in their parts. Johnny Depp does his usual great job of getting into the character. He doesn't make a hero of Dillinger, but he shows him as a human being. Neither were the government agents made either villains or heroes. The bloody parts, mainly gun battles and their aftermath, weren't overdone, and there were several in the course of the movie. This period of time in the annals of American crime was when personal ownership of automatic weapons was outlawed, because the cops were outgunned, and many bystanders were wounded and killed in the gun battles. My wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed the show.

To be quite honest, this movie lacked a lot in my book. The film quality was that of a home movie. Lots of bumping around, blurred images and background noise. It was a Bourne Series theory that was not replicated well. The story line was fairly interesting, but it dragged on, and on and on...This is not the action packed, edge of your seat movie they claim it is. The costumes are great, the cars are great...the gun scenes sounded like they were using toy guns. I expected more from big names like Depp and Bale.

This movie was so hyped up and got me all excited. Sadly it was a only so-so. I feel that the movie was rushed and made it to hard to make a connection with any of the characters. When the movie started, I had very high expectations. However. The story was boring, the action was boring, the drama was boring, the love was boring. The movie was two and a half hours of build up to nothing. It wasn't a great action movie, wasn't a great gangster movie, wasn't a great love story. It really didn't deliver in any regard. There was nothing wrong with the acting in the film, excluding Bale who was extremely pale and boring throughout. The core problem in the movie was the editing and the directions the director took. Overall I have to give this movie a 2; it misses the 3 stars because it was too long. I just feel bad that the actors' excellent work was so poorly wasted.

I thought Johnny Depp did a great job, and Christian Bales. I thought the symbolism throughout the movie was spectacular. I liked how we kinda saw both their paths. Depp and Bale were phenomenal, great actors.

This movie was awesome! I went in thinking it was going to be all guns and shooting, and came out having seen an incredible movie that included action, adventure and drama.
I thought the symbolism throughout the movie was spectacular. Depp, Cotillard and Bale were phenomenal!

While highlighting John Dillinger's career as a bank robber Public Enemies focuses on the fact that he was a man with a capability to love. His relationship with Billie Frechette provides a warm contrast to the machine gun mayhem his crew created in their exploits and in their battles with the FBI G-men. An exciting picture with a love story. Great movie.

I love Johnny Depp and have been a huge fan but I must say that this won't be in my home inventory of DVD's. The camera work was shakey at times, the story line was uninteresting in places and the shooting scenes were too loud.
Sorry Johnny, like you much better as a Pirate and will look forward to your role as the Mad Hatter!

The movie starts off decent. However, after a few bank robberies and car chases, it slows down to a snails pace. I would give it 2 of 5 stars.
