This Mann (Michael) knows how to make a movie! ‘Public Enemies’ is based on actual events, so the plot is as interesting as a 1930’s real life crime story can be, and is very well told. The acting and directing were outstanding, and while the depiction of the time period wasn’t one hundred percent correct (nearly technically impossible), it was amazingly well done. Visually, it could not have been much better. This movie was thoroughly enjoyable. I don’t usually care to see a movie more than once, but I really hope to see this one again.

I watched this movie with the best sound I could ever imagine at the movie grill.If you like the ordinary gangster movie this is not it . This is very true to the day that dillinger lived.VERY WELL DONE as far as the acting. Depp is the all around bad guy, pulls no punches. What would have been better is the people thet surrounded him. The story was lacking in knowing who they were, As in the people that took him down.I think for the era that were in, the show was powerful and very fun to watch.

Both Michael Mann and Johnny Depp have made better films. The best moments are the action scenes, but even there the use of HD video gives you the feeling that you are not watching film, and are watching tv. Its weird.
The characters are never developed and fleshed out with their back stories. The cowboy lawman who shoots Depp could have been far more interesting and important if you had just a hint of who he was.
That said, I still would recommend the film. Depp makes Dillinger a dapper Dan who delights in chivalry and kills without remorse. Its hard to tell who Mann feels the hero of the film is. But it is compelling.

Johnny Depp was awesome...he's an incredible actor, no doubt and without him, the film would have been even more boring. With that said, there were times the film seemed to drag and it was quite long. Interesting story line, especially because the basic premise was true, and overall pretty good.

I absolutely loved the story, and the acting was great! Johny Depp was the reason I went to watch it in the first place. I knew he would make the movie worth watching. And I wasn't disappointed! I don't think anyone could have done a better job playing Dillinger. The only thing I didn't like was the camera shaking the whole time, but for a movie like that, it can be overlooked. Everyone should see it!

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. The story line was good and the acting was fantastic. I liked that the actors portrayed the characters well. I thought the filming left some to be desired. The camera shots and the filming of this movie appeared to be that of a poorly made home movie. A lot of the scenes appeared to be filmed with the cameras being held and shot freehand. (and the cameramen were tired). In some of the shots you could see the camera tilt or shift angles were the cameramen dropped the camera or shifted its angle accidentally. Over all the movie is good and the story appears to be accurate . I would recommend this film to friends and family.

Public Enemies was very good because the cast is well chosen. Johnny Depp makes John Dillinger "human" while at the same time a ruthless criminal. The paradox is a good one. Christian Bale is also excellent as the G-man who ultimately catches Dillinger. I would also cite the sets and costumes ('30's era clothing, cars, etc.) as a key element of the movie. Thoughtful, at times chillingly violent and all together well done.

A very good movie. I thought Johnny Depp was able to make you not hate John Dillinger but not like him either. I would have like to get more depth about Christian Bale's character, Agent Purvis. But it was very well written, the acting was great, good insight to 1930's law enforcement.

4 stars because I appriciate all the good qualities of the movie, despite the fact it's not the kind of movie I enjoy watching. This movie is not for everyone!
It was a modern version of an old time (50's-60's) gangster movie. Lots of action and graffic sceens. Johnny nailed the part like always. True story, very accurate. I loved the accurate depection of the 30's: cars, guns, suits, stores, etc...
Very little dialogue. This is a very good old time type of movie. It's nothing like Donnie Brasco or Goodfellas. Think more black and white.
I unfortunatly wasnt satisified walking away from the theater. If you like movies on TMC you would probally enjoy this movie. If you don't, it's not even worth renting the DVD.

After watching a documentary on Dillinger, I went in with a knowledge of the actual historical events surrounding the times and people this movie is based on. I believe they did an excellent job staying true to history while adding tasteful and enjoyable theatrics. Johnny Depp does a great job portraying John Dillinger and this is one of his best roles yet. The audience becomes so empathetic to Depp's character that he becomes a hero and protagonist when he is in fact a criminal and a killer. Being that it was a theatrical representation of history, I felt they could have pushed the love story more, even though it was already a strong core plot of the movie. Also, Christian Bale's supporting role performance was well done.

The movie was nearly 2 1/2 hours long. Near the beginning, we are introduced to a woman who shelters the Dillinger gang. We see her for 30 seconds. 2 very long hours later, she plays a pivotal role. I would like it better on DVD because I could have skipped back to discover who she was. There is a lot of repetition in the movie - gunfight after gunfight - most of them in the dark and with the camera swinging around - I had trouble telling the good guys from the bad guys. I would recommend the movie because it was good overall, but it would have been better if I could have controlled the rate at which it played - skipped over some parts, revisited others, and maybe paused during some of the fight scenes so I could see who was who.

Good movie, Depp does an amazing job with his character, and the entire movie did a great job of depicting the "gangster" era. I really liked the way it was filmed, at times it switched over to that "home video" look, which i think made you feel like you were right there in the action with them. It felt a little long at one part - but then picked up and held my attention throughout the rest of the movie. I would actually give it 3.5 stars but was unable to with this rating system.

This movie has been done and oftentimes better and with much more drama and action than Public Enemies. While the movie was certainly not boring or bad, by any means, it just lacked anything to make me want to see it again...other than Depp, who I am always amazed by the reach of characters he has up his sleeve. If you have a chance to catch this one do, but don't go out of your way for it.

I'm a big JD fan and looked forward to this movie. I found it very boring. If not for JD, we would have walked half way through. Too long, too slow, no plot and a very weird "home movie video" look used in some scenes that made the whole movie feel cheap.

I thought it moved along pretty well for as long as it was.
It was enjoyable to recognize the background in scenes- i.e. the Capitol in Madison, downtown Baraboo,etc.

I read reviews before I went and about half were negative, saying it was boring, characters weren't developed, etc. What are these people talking about? The movie was great! Plenty of shoot'em up scenes.

looking very forward to this movie. we settled down with our treats and sat through all the reviews and commercials. little did i know that these would be the most exciting part of the movie experience. this movie was like any other gangster movie i've seen. johnny depp bought nothing special to the movie.
