The cinematography, the acting, and the shots of Chicago were phenomenal. The actual story, however, was lacking. This film seemed to ride the fence and never really made up it's mind about the characters. By trying to cover too much of Dillinger's career, the movie ran out of time for character development. This is extremely disappointing considering Dillinger's larger-than-life reputation. Definitely worth seeing, if not for Johnny Depp's performance alone.

While I can see why some took points off for too much violence, too slow, too .. whatever, my wife and I enjoyed this film from start to finish. We're Chicagoans, of course, so this is like history. It was also fun guessing the locations and how the visual effects removed much of the modernization of the scenes. It's definitely not for kids.

The way the story was written and portrayed fabulously displayed the time period and the lives of John Dillinger and those closely involved with him. The frequent and sometimes brutal violence was not pervasive, and balanced with excellent storytelling and character development, making this film more complex rather than the average blind action "shoot-em-up" movies. Johnny Depp very effectively portrayed Dillenger's character: a sparse, hardened criminal with a touch of dry humour. The film techniques and direction was masterful, with camera techniques used by documentarists, bringing the audience more personally into the story. The sometimes harsh lighting portrayed the desired moods extremely well. Overall, this was a brilliant film.

The acting, costumes, and sets in the movie were excellent. Many individual scenes in the movie were compelling. However, overall the script lost focus because it attempted to cover too much ground. There wasn't enough character development because of the constant shifts in time and place. The movie would have been much better if it had simply covered the life of Dillinger without putting so much time into Hoover, Purvis, and the FBI.

Public Enemies was an excellent film biopic recounting the events of the life of John Dillinger and thosse around him, both friends and enemies. The screenplay was written accurately, and the acting and action shots in the movie were top notch!!!!! Johnny Depp was as usual at his ultimate best as Dillinger and Marion Cotillard brought a feeling of deep admiration as an actress in this role of Billie Frechette. Christian Bale was good too as Melvin Purvis, but the kudos really goes to Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillardd for their excellent performances which really make the movie.

Johnny Depp did a very good job portraying Dillinger and the acting throughout was great but the movie plot was way to vague. Unless you already knew the Dillinger story and events, you would pretty much be in the dark with the timeline. His plastic surgery wasn't a part of the movie as other important aspects of his career. Not enough "focused" scenes and not enough action. I was really looking forward to this movie being that it was filmed in the Wisconsin area, and I walked out, all around, disappointed.

Favorite part of the film were the locations used, especially because a lot of them are familiar to me, since I live in the Chicago area. My pal & I kept elbowing each other when we spotted a location that we recognized (this also includes Crown Point, IN, Lockport, IL, Northwoods of WI). That, in itself, made the movie very real & brought those figures to life. This seemed to be a film that paid a lot of attention to the facts, & didn't glamorize them. I would have given this 5 stars, but I wish they had shown more about his upbringing & how Dillinger came to be the criminal he turned out to be later in life, & how the public came to treating him as sort of a "hero" figure, given the economic situation of the era.

Disjointed. Very hard to follow "any" (?) real plot. First time I've seen nothing interesting or creative from Johnny Depp. His love interest was boring and made no sense. (A pick up – for what reason?) Why all that blood and gore but when they're in bed they have clothes on? And as for the legendary Edgar Hoover - that actor (?) had no character either. And who could keep up with the identities of all the thugs and cops? NO, I would NOT recommend any of my friends to see this movie. It seemed to be just an excuse for shoot 'em up car chases. Seeing the gun men riding the running boards was exciting but how come all those bullets firing and missing the other cars?

Johnny Depp is by far the best actor of his time. The other actors in this movie really kept up as well. This 2 1/2 hour movie did not drag on. I left very satisfied paying $11.00 for my ticket and will buy this movie on blu-ray. The storyline was missing a little something, which is why i gave 4 stars, but overall it was extremely well done. I especially loved the sounds that came out of those older guns. The action scenes were great.

I went and saw this movie last night! It was amazing. I enjoyed that not only it focused on the actual bank robberies, but on his life in general. I will have to warn you it is a LONG movie... so, if you can get there 25 minutes late, you will miss the previews and the Coke 'commercials'! I wish I would have know there would be so many! A+ in terms of cinematography and casting. Mann is effective in capturing the essence of the time period...the costumes and set are authentic and impressive. Through the interesting camera angles, you feel as though you are a witness to events of the 1930's. The gritty lenswork contributes to the darkness of an era when bad guys were heroes, government was the enemy, prohibition was at an end, and the economy was inciting public panic. My only complaint was that this movie was rich on melodrama and heavy on exaggeration. While the interpretation of the period was indeed accurate, much of the story, in terms of chronology and characterization, was very loosely interpreted and glamourized.

The story and the performances drew you into the action as though you were a part of it. This is NOT a mere action flick; it is a story of reallife human beings caught up in a corrupt and lavish lifestyle and how it ultimately comes crashing down on each one of them . The on location scenes, the choreography, costumes, and sets were impeccable and authentic to the times. All the actors gave breathtaking performances particularly Johnny Depp who made you believe he WAS John Dillinger and not the actor playing the gangster. The film has made me anxious to read the book and isn't that a supreme credit to the affect of a motion picture. Please Academy - remember the superb Michael Mann, his exemplary crew, and stellar cast at Oscar time!

This is the first Oscar contender of the year. Depp and Bale both turn in performances worthy of the Best Actor and Supporting Actor statuettes, and the movie itself is raw, violent, gritty, and realistic in ways that modern summer blockbusters fail to capture.
I understand previous criticisms about how this movie doesn't "feel" like a movie should. The ending left me wanting something, to be honest. It wasn't until I left the theatre and had time to reflect that I realized the whole point was to accurately portray the live of a vicious thug who robbed banks. That sums the life of John Dillinger, and that's what this movie did so well. Bravo.

Public Enemies could have been a great summer action movie but there were too many slow scenes and random events that took away from the exciting lives of 1930s criminals. The action scenes were great. But too few and far apart for the movie to have a quick, exciting pace. There was hardly any focus on the bank robberies themselves. The scenes were too short and should have had a more in depth look at Dillinger's techniques. Also, the last half of the movie was very anti-climatic. They should have let the story drive a little away from the exact details of Dillinger's life so that it could be a "movie" and not seem so much like a stylized documentary.

What an amazing movie. Just about the best photography and production I've seen for any movie ever. Don't wait for the DVD, see it on the big screen in a really good theater. Michael Mann recreates 1930's era USA with realism beyond description. Depp nails the role of Dillinger, and the acting is top notch throughout. Few movies make me want to watch them a second time, but this is one of them.

I like the way the film portrayed a very human side to J.D. Historical facts fairly accurate and the film was very well done! Never a dull moment! Bale and Depp were awesome!

I loved the hand held camera aspect of the movie. It made it feel like you were right there! The actors all did an amazing job as well. Would highly recommend!

This was a very good movie. It did get slow in parts, but was very true to the facts about Dillinger.

This movie gave the audience a glimpse back into the time before "criminals and the law enforcement agencies." Not only did the "bad guys" rob, murder and live a frivolous life *(untouchable in their eyes), but the "good guys" also were ruthless. Yet, there were moments of heart-breaking sadness that makes one want to turn away, only to be thrilled by the glamour of this masterpiece. True genius went into this film to work on the depth of bringing this era alive once more for ultimate enjoyment.
