There's a quiet anger running through this film - sometimes it bursts out into the open, but most often it is simmering just under the surface. The same can be said for s*xual tension in the film. At least two theatre scenes -- The first one (with the blue lights on the ceiling) was filmed in the Paramount in Aurora. All the theatre scenes looked great. In the same way - the costumes, scenery - everything visual in the movie is tremendous. Those Oscar-worthy performances? I'd say Depp as Dillinger, Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis and Marion Cotillard as Billie Frechette
One of the better films I've seen this summer.

This movie was Great. No it did not keep as close to the truth that most would have liked (its an action movie not a documentary get over it). But the sheer Genius of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale was enough to keep you interested for the whole two and a half hours.

Micheal Mann should have been more accurate with his portrayal of the facts considering they are well known. NONE of the men Pervis was after were killed at Little Bohemia, Nitti had no connection to Dillinger. I wonder if he even read the book. Johnny Depp was the movie, and Mike Vieau was convincing as Ed Shouse, but Christian Bale was not a good Pervis and Hoovers' character was woefully miscast. You can only truely enjoy this movie if you know NOTHING about the life and times of John Dillinger.

Johnny Depp is masterful. Is there anything he can't do? Fantastic cinematography, dialogue, editing, pacing....and great acting! Mann does a perfect re-creation of the USA in various atmospheres from the 30's! I have read some harsh criticism of Christian Bale.... but I disagree. Not Bale's best but he is fine as Hoover's first G-man. Open your safe, grab some movie money and zoom down to your neighborhood cineplex. Worth investing the time and money to steal a viewing on the big screen.

I like Johnny Depp....but that move was awfull... I wouldn't spend $.95 to see it, let alone $9.50 each for my wife and I. Rent it on DVD and you will see what I mean. Quite a few people left the theatre before the movie was over.

Johnny Depp played a great Dillinger. The Wisconsin backdrop rocked for a local girl, but I would've like to see Dillinger more disfigured as he gave gimself plastic surgery. I appreciated how Hollywood wrote Dillinger as a loveable human villain. Good shoot em up, not great content.

I was intrigued about this movie. Every knows Johnny Depp was in it. Bale pulled his own as well. The way the actors molded themselves into these characters. Depp, the nice fancy clothes and long coat. Bale, the worn out sherrif clothing sets the theme quit well. The portrayal of onflict was beleivable. Killing anyone innocent from the bad guys as well as the cops. The woman stands her ground and makes Depp keep his promises too her and that was just compelling. The remarks made " he will come to her or she will go too him" How many couples really have a love like that? The other gangsters not caring about what happens next was typical, however Depp took it to the next level. He BECAME Dillinger and you forgot it was Jonny Depp.

"Public Enemies" could have been a classic. Alas, it's just another "gangster run-through," as James Cagney used to say. Sure, the direction is competent, and Johnny Depp is fine as Dillinger. But the story fails to deliver, giving is familiar fiction where the historical narrative is far more complicated and compelling. Dillinger's court appearance in Indiana is remarkably accurate and by far the best scene in the movie. Apparently, the scriptwriters didn't read the rest of the book. "Public Enemies" was so eagerly anticipated because to date no film has ever given "justice" to America's depression desperadoes. Too bad that's still the case.

I truly think Michael Mann took this to the limit making this the best character portrayal of John Dillinger to date. Johnny Depp is the master of acting and his portrayal of the famed gangster should make him the Oscar Winner hands down. But we all know Hollywood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No initial character development at all. You are just thrust into a prision escape scene. None of the characters were introduced to the viewer, at all. Each scene seemed to run into the other. The ending was as predictable as one could imagine. QUESTIONS: 1) Was I disappointed? You read my mind. 2) Is John Dillinger disappointed? You bet, Depp and company should be glad he is gone or he would get them for this embarrasment. Gotta go now...

This movie was on Michael Mann's worst list of films. It lacked the quality of his earlier works. Thief, Heat, Manhunter, To Live and Die in L.A.,.....just to name a few. Everyone will see this for Johnny Depp and not see that this was supposed to be a gangster film comeback. It lacked his touch, the green lighting effect that he does, his musical touch, etc. This would be o.k. for a DVD rental.

I really enjoyed this movie. Johnny Depp was fantastic as John Dillinger. I loved seeing one of the scenes filmed in Columbus, WI since I was able to go there to watch some of the filming in person. I also recognized a scene filmed in Oshkosh, WI and recognized parts of Chicago. Johnny D. made John Dillinger seem extremely sexy, but I still prefer him as a pirate! Marion Cotillard was excellent as Billie Freschette as well. I wasn't too impressed with Christian Bale's performance.

Other than an early sound issue, I have no complaints. PE was beautiful. The period detail is gorgeous. I was thoroughly taken in by Depp's Dillinger, & Bale gave a committed & nuanced performance. Ms Cotillard is wonderful. I felt compelled to root for both sides; both Dillinger & Purvis had flaws. The jittery camera work added to the immediacy of the action sequences & the lingering establishing shots infused details with importance & emotion. Mann has a reverence for the period. Detractors have said that the movie is boring. I don't understand that. Maybe it's viewers expecting Transformers-style mindless action. I'm not disparaging Transformers (I enjoyed it), but PE is not in the same league at all and I'm very grateful for that.

Good Movie! Not for the faint of heart or the sensitive eared! Those guns are LOUD! Get your snacks & drain your veins before the show - there's a lot you don't want to miss. It is a long one though - hang in there! Depp was awesome. He did make one Jack Sparrow face & it was obvious that he is way too tough to cry. He still looked effen hot trying. The girls are all very good looking & the fashion was true to the era & sexy!! Men were men & women were women - at least the ones in this film. (not to say that the way it is today is bad - I like it both ways! lol) Go see it - it is worth it & a great date flick too. Some very romantic scenes and it will have her hanging on to you for dear life. smoochies.!

What a disappointment - the movie was slow and disjointed. Not enough substance - it was like they based the movie on the newsreel clips at the beginning - and you know how boring those were. Do not go see this movie - it is a waste of money.

For a violence-filled rendition of our past, this movie had a lot of soul. The characters were true and emotional and the action was non-stop. Probably a little too violent for the under 12 group--very real--but exceptionally well done.
