The movie does a great job at taking you back to 1933. The costuming is right on the money and make one wish that men still dressed like that. Alot of action scenes. Johnny Depp is John Dillinger. Suspects rights have come along way since 1933. If you like history, action, and romance, this is a must see.

As a fan of Micheal Mann's films, I enjoyed it very much, however it doesn't hold the same expectation of his previous crime thriller, Heat. This film could have been made better if Mann had limited the focus only on a couple aspects of Dillenger's character such as his celebrity like status and how stars such as Clark Gable often immulated him on screen. Nevertheless, I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys this genre and era. Depp's depiction of the praised criminal is noteworthy and believable. Although this film is about Dillenger, Bale's portrayal of agent Purvis could have been stronger as he often lacks the enthusiasm of some of his previous performances. Regardless of these minor infractions, I would give it a solid B.

The action scenes are very good, but it was seemed to lack something. Historically it was pretty right on, just a little slow. The bank robbery scenes were fast and seemed fairly minor in the midst of the movie. It was entertaining, but I'm not sure I would recommend it to friends as a must see movie.

Movie did an excellent job recreating the violence, grit and desperation of 1930's depression America. Johhny Depp was fantastic as the infamous bank robber John Dillinger. Viewers really get a sense of Dillinger's ultra-cool, live-for-today only persona, that so facinated the ordinary folk of his time. Movie gets lower marks for historical accuracy-I spotted at least 3 "goofs" as the story unfolded. The biggest was that in the movie the FBI got Pretty Boy Floyd before Dillinger, who commented on this to FBI man Purvis-in reality, this could never have happened as Dillinger was killed at least 3 or 4 months before Floyd.

The gun fight scenes in this movie are amazing and the both the actress from "Le Vie en Rose" and Johnny Depp give marvelous performances.
I only wish I would have read up on Dillinger a bit before seeing the film. There are a lot of characters who pop in and out of the film I wanted to be more familiar with the history. I feel like it would have helped me keep up.

I went into the movie with no expectation and at first I thought it was a little slow. But pretty soon I found my self so interested that I was on the edge of my seat waiting for what happened next, even though I already knew. ( i just watched the history channel show on John Dillenger.
Johnny Depp was wonderful as usual but I do think that Christian Bale should just stick to Batman. But overall I thought the movie was great and I reccomend it.

As a historical film it was interesting, but as a character driven film, there was no one to root for. I keep reading about how Dillinger was this Robin Hood type figure who gave money to the poor and was beloved by many common folk, but I just did not see that in this film. They touched briefly on it a couple times, but not enough for you to develop any kind of sympathy or concern for the character. In some movies that's deliberate, but in this one I think they intended for you to care about him. When the credits rolled at the end, it left me sitting in my seat shrugging and saying "hmm."

The scenes were very choppy, not really a flowing storyline. It was very dark and hard to tell who was who in some of the high action shooting scenes. The guns sounded more like pop guns than machine guns! Come on! Of course Johnny was charming as always with that smile that just makes you melt. For that it was worth it.

This movie had such great potential but fell woefully short. There is no story, no backstory, no how he goes from here to there. One day he is in Chicago, the next he is in Miami. You end up watching a time line and not a story.

A very well done movie. The storyline follows closely to the true-life story. Depp played Dillinger to the point where you believe Depp is Dillinger. I highly recommend Public Enemies for a step back in time to have a feeling of how the 30's influenced Dillinger's conduct. Mann was able to catch the glory days of Hollywood in this movie. Bravo!!

I was excited for this movie to be released. I was skeptical about the leading actress who plays billy, Dillinger's love interest, but she did absolutely amazing. Great movie for any movie goer. It will definitely be seen at the academy awards. Trust me!!!

Public Enemies is a fantastic movie. I thought even though it was quite lengthy, it wasn't unnecessarily so. I was sucked into the story and kept on the edge of my seat. It has a little bit of something for everyone in it, I believe. A true cops and robbers story done the right way and something I was definitely looking for as movie scripts have been seriously lacking the last few years. The cast is absolutely full of familiar faces even for tiny parts and Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard shine. Go see this exciting movie.

Depp looks like Dillinger and if you've ever seen old news clips, he acts like Dillinger. Public Enemies is a good move and well worth the time to see it. It has some slow moments but for the most part moves pretty fast.

The audience never really connects with any of the actors. The movie does a reasonable job at telling the JD story. However, the viewer does not leave the theater feeling anything.
Far better examples from the same time period are "Road to Perdition" where we really care about Sullivan (father and son) and want them to win. Also "The Untouchables" where Malone and Ness bond like father and son. Both of these movies have real stories.
Public Enemies is just a chronicle of JD and in the end good triumphs over evil because a former ally is now in need. Hoover is a politician, Purvis is evil and disconnected and JD runs roughshod over the whole bunch until betrayed. Where is that spark that drove the writer to create the screenplay?

I think for what it is, a "summer movie," 'Public Enemies' is a good movie. As a piece of film art, it leaves something to be desired. Personally, I was distracted by the constant change in camera techniques and even began to feel sick to my stomach during the scene at Little Bohemia. I was also distracted by some of the casting. Billy Crudup as Hoover? Really? And I found myself saying "Is that Claire from Lost?" and "What is LeeLee Sobieski doing here?" The only person missing from usual film cameos was Alec Baldwin, who I fully expected to pop up in the crowd scene at the end. But, for all it's distractions, it was a good summer movie. Not so sure it's going to go down as a "classic" anytime soon, though.

I think all of the actors did a great job in this movie, especially Marion Cotillard. She and Depp seemed to have great chemistry. And who doesn't love Johnny Depp? Would have liked a little more "background information" but all-in-all, it was a terrific movie. Even though you know what the ending is going to be, you are kind of routing for Dillinger to go on.

Great movie! The HD and the handheld cameras really worked for me (many have complained about this). I thought it added a sense of realism. I'm glad it wasn't shot like The Untouchables (which I also love). It's its own movie - unique. Great story and great acting too. Plus my hometown of Columbus, WI plays a role!

Acting is way above average but plot doesn't seem to have a common thread; like watching vignettes. Michael Mann has been better (Heat) but Johnny Depp is magnificent. One of his best.

I'm a huge Johnny Depp fan, which tends to skew my objectivity. That being said, my initial reception of the movie was lukewarm... but then I got dragged into it heart and soul. It's got a bit of the slow burn... after you leave the theatre, you want to go back for another look (I'm seeing it again this weekend). I thought Christian Bale's performance was spot on... better than in Dark Knight... and has piqued my interest in seeing Terminator Salvation. And my next comment likely will shock a few folks, but overall I consider this movie to be quite the romantic tale. The movie was much better than "4 stars - good" but I agree with some critics' reviews that the script didn't do justice do its actors' star power.

Johnny Depp brings Dillinger to life in Michael Mann's latest. He once again shows why he's one of the greatest actors going today. Great acting from all the cast, C Bale's portrayal of a controlled, focused, yet ill equiped FBI agent and Marion Cotillard as Billie was wonderful and she brought the emotional impact the film needs.
I loved this film. Is it perfect? No, it could have gone in a variety of directions in terms of script content, etc. Is it factual? About as factual as Hollywood gets without it being a documentary. It's beautiful in its look, costumes, settings. The shoot outs, bank robberies and prison breaks are exciting. Go and enjoy!
