Excellent acting. Very sympathetic portrayal of Dillinger and Billie Frechette. Appealing, if not perfectly ,historically accurate. Lots of gun fire, car chases and blood. Not a "feel good"(no happy ending) movie but very engrossing. 2+ hours sped by. You'll get more out of the film if you research the people portrayed. Recommended.

Although the plot and story were of course fairly held up and thorough, it was not enough for me. Many of the characters were under developed. Johnny did a great Dillinger. The filming is what killed me on this film. It was as if parts of it had not even been editted, and then other parts were glorious and rich. I didn't understand the contrast between the two. The sound effects were terrible, and even the dialogue was not strong. Some parts were murmured, other parts were loud. Just don't get it. Could have been a glorious reinactment of one of this country's most prized wanted men. But instead, we got B movie level editing wtih secondary cameras and the sick feeling of a homemade handheld camera for the random majority of the movie.

Great sets and costumes. Wide range of charcters. Christian Bale reminded me of Robert Duvall for some reason. Really good movie. WOuld have like more about Dillinger , but i guess he was sort of a singular person in reality--guns, cars, Billie etc. I didnt really buy the relationship with Billie until the end.

Love Johnny Depp in pretty much anything he's in and I was willing to stay in the frozen movie theatre to watch him, but the movie was about a 1/2 hour too long. It's a pretty good period piece with the scenery, costumes and attitude. There wasn't enough character development and I didn't know who people were supposed to be so I had a hard time following the storyline. There were a couple of scenes so unrealistic that I was scoffing during the movie. I like Depp so much that I kept hoping for the happy ending I knew wasn't coming. The movie is missing something, but I'd recommend it. I wouldn't go see it again, though.

Johnny Depp is always great to watch. I loved the camera work, especially of the bank robbery scenes. The theme music for robberies was excellent. I was distracted by the "X" that appears to be a scar in JD's hairline in back. In one bank, an FDIC sign is displayed, which is historically accurate since the FDIC began in 1933. However, I'm not sure the convention of naming a war on things was historically accurate. Hoover states he is declaring the first war on crime. Also, not sure about the references to czars.
Christian Bale occasionally sounds more British than Southern American. He usually does an American accent quite well.
All in all, a fine time will be had by folks who like gangster flicks, Johnny Depp, and period movies.

Perhaps due to the expectations one would have for a movie with Depp, Bale & Mann, it was everything you could ask for in a great movie, but left you wanting more out of it. It never "swept" you away in that epic experience kind of way, where you walk out going, "wow!". Don't get me wrong, it is a very well crafted movie & Depp's performance is amazing. Cotillard is excellent as well & her performance was up to the task opposite Depp. Definitely go see it as it is one of the better movies this year, but it could have been so much bigger.

A 5 star rating if you are a movie aficionado and relative to the typical movie of 2009. Great tension despite knowing the inevitable conclusion. Depp and Bale are magic on the screen. Its not "The Godfather" (a pretty high standard obviously) but a 2009 must see.

Although brilliantly shot by director Michael Mann, "Public Enemies" features one of the weakest scripts in recent memory for such a high-budget film. The performances from the heavy hitters (with the exception of Marion Cotillard) are not up to the standards we've come to expect from these talented actors. Depp's portrayal of Dillinger has little depth and smacks of a vanity show, and the same goes for Bale's portrayal of FBI agent Melvin Purvis. I also found the supporting roles to be subpar, with the exception of Stephen Graham's excellent portrayal of Baby Face Nelson. Just to top it all off, Billy Crudup may be the worst J. Edgar Hoover I've ever seen.

Johnny Depp is always fascinating. He was the hook for sitting through a film in a theatre cold as a meat locker. No storyteller can miss when talking about the gangster era, but I kept waiting for it to be more compelling. Styling, artistry and costumes intrigued and fit the period of history--even the 'jumping' camera shots worked. I'm guessing that Mann wanted you to 'feel it' as if you were running alongside Dillinger. At least I'm hoping that was what he was after otherwise it was less than effective. Marion Cotillard was amazing...even more so than Depp...except for the final scene and his whisper message. Now that was very cool.

I am a fan of both Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard, but I was a bit disappointed in the movie. The chemistry between the two actors was not great, and the pacing of the movie was a bit off.
I agree with one of the other reviewers that the characters were not developed well enough. It would have been nice to get more background on Dillinger and Frechette.
Still, it's worth seeing.

Johnny is brilliant in capturing the intensity, charisma & charm of Dillinger. I enjoyed the film immensely. The way Mann chose to film it made you feel like you were there in the middle of the action while historic locations added another level of awe & excitement. Time went fast & I would have gladly sat there over 3 hours if Mann had chosen to include more details.
For anyone not familiar with Dillinger, I would recommend doing research on his life such as reading Bryan Burroughs "Public Enemies" book before seeing the movie so you can connect with Dillinger & appreciate Mann's choices to film at the actual locations such as Little Bohemia & Crown Point jail.
I will see it again & can't wait for the release of the dvd!

Missing much of the real Dillinger story, “Public Enemies” introduces fictional elements, like the "Bye bye blackbird" schlock at the end, that even Oliver Stone would avoid. Depp moves his lips, period, and Dillinger's famous easy charm becomes clichéd "I'm invincible and I want it all” utterances. The long scenes with "Billie" are boring AND made up. Nothing is said about Melvin Purvis' repeated lapses before he and his men finally cut Dillinger down, essentially murdering him. In any case, this "war on crime" was very small beans blown up for publicity so Hoover could cement his power. What does work here are the shootouts and the recreation of the '30s in Midwest America. The cars are great. Read the book.

certainly not bad, but lacking excitement for a Michael Mann film. A couple of exciting scenes, but it was just one of those movies that is missing that certain something.
We do seem to start the story in the middle, and Dillinger is long enough ago that I think some back story for both him and Melvin Purvis is probably a good idea. The movie starts with Dillinger as Public Enemy Number one and Purvis being assigned to chase him down. Sort of abrupt for me.
Performances were fine, though I seldom have much use for Christian Bale, he does his usual gruff emotionless thing, Depp and Cotillard are good. There are a number of enjoyable supporting roles including Giovanni Ribisi as Creepy Karpis.

I'm a big Johnny Depp fan, but, this performance went above and beyond. I think the whole movie went way above. The time period was portrayed, the way the other gangsters were portrayed. Marion Cotillard was brilliant as well. Personally I liked Christian Bale better as Batman. Melvin Purvis does not suit him. If you're a little shy about violence don't go see it. Some of the comice lines from Depp in the movie are just classic and the one love scene between he and Cotillard ooo la la. Don't miss it.

Overly "melodramatic" treatment of what gangster movies of the Gable and Cagney genre did effortlessly. Cinematic style made all performances "cliched" and endeavored to cover up the lack of any interesting plot, character development or comment about anything. Who cared what happened to any of the characters as a result.

I enjoyed Johnny Depps potrayal of Dillinger and Marion Cotillard was great as Billie. I thought all the characters were well played, but they lacked development. Dillinger was raised by an abusive father, Pervis was in way over his head and, Billie just pops up in the movie and becomes his girlfriend with no back ground at all. Hardly a mention of the hero Dillinger was to the poor people of the era. I loved the way it was shot and Mann did a great job making it fun to watch, but a little more about the characters would have made this movie great.

I thought this movie was really great. It is a gangster movie, so yes - it will be like other gangster movies. That's a big fat DUH. So if you're going to complain, don't go see a gangster movie. And in regards to other's comments on no plot or base story line - this is how Dillinger was. He didn't go telling his life story to everyone he met, and the movie didn't put it in for the viewer's benefit - and I think it's great. And honestly, this movie was only supposed to be about what he did that made him HUGE as well as bring him to his downfall. Not his childhood, etc. If you want his entire life story, go read a biography.

I liked the screenplay and scenery. It all looks very much like the era of the 1930's, from pictures I have seen in my family albums.
All the characters are believable in their actions.
The lighting in the movie was perfect, in my estimation.
I will see this flick again, and have it in my personal library.

Really disappointed in this movie. Love Johnny Depp in just about anything, even Public Enemies, but his talents were wasted here. No real story line, very disjointed movie. About an hour and a half too long....very boring in between the shoot 'em up scenes. Marion Cotillard was charming, but her talents, too, were wasted here.
