I did enjoy some aspects of the movie but overall thought it lacked the punch I was expecting. I thought it was slow on character development and jumped around too much in the beginning. Could have been almost any action film. That being said, I enjoyed the costumes, and enjoyed Depp's character more closer to the end of the movie, where more time was foucsed on him.

How on earth can you make a movie with Johnny Depp and have a two and a half hour movie feel like like four hours? I was very much looking forward to this film and found it to be all technique and no heart. Depp is always good, even here where he had no story to work with. Christian Bale played Christian Bale...again. Marion Cotillard's character felt extraneous, Visually the film is Michael Mann at his best. Perhaps he might consider including a narrative in his next film.

"I was looking foward to this movie and was not disapointed." The costumes was great and the cars. I will always go to see Depps movies and am very happy with his performance. I'd give this version of John Dilinger's life a 6 out of 10. I've seen the original movie, and this one pales in comparison. I would recommend it to friends only if they had not seen the original version. Johnny Depp did a great job, as usual, but I think the part written for him was a bit skewed toward the more violent side. I preferred the original movie's protrayal of Dilinger as more of a legendary figure.

I was so excited to see this movie and I wasn't disappointed. Depp's performance was, as usual, outstanding and moving. The cinematography was beautiful and the shootout scenes were wonderfully shot. Great acting and great entertainment, a must see.

I've been looking forward to this film for a long time. It's beautifully filmed and it's great fun to see the clothing and cars from the 1930's. However, there's very little character development. There isn't one person that I felt any compassion for or liked. I had expected that there would be some suspenseful scenes but I never once was sitting on the edge of my seat. If you like car chases and lots of gunfire, then this is your movie. It seems like such a waste of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.

The camera work was absolutely terrible. Between the horrible digital quality and the over-use of close-ups during crucial shoot out scenes, it took me out of the film from the start. The characters are not very deep either. Depp is always enjoyablel to watch and was so in this, which was probably the only reason I didn't give it one star!

I was worried the movie was going to be long. But, after the first 20 minutes the time went by quickly. Johnny Depp is a very good actor. He really immerses himself into the character. Christian Bale as usual is very intense and believable. Good period piece and worth seeing.

Johnny Depp was fabulous! Christian Bale was very good. Marion Collitard was good. And all of the other actors, good. The directing could have been a little better somewhere in the first 15 minutes. I certainly didn't love it. With a great cast the performances were top notch, as expected, but there was potential for more. There was very little character development to speak of, which denied these great actors of a chance to really shine. I found the soundtrack flat out distracting at times, with odd transitions and moments of silence. The dialog was muddy and the gunshots were exaggerated. Overall I was not impressed and would recommend anyone wait until the DVD release. That way you can turn up the volume (or rewind) to catch what they're saying, turn down the volume when the guns start blasting your eardrums, and pause it so you can use the restroom at some point during the 2.5 hours.

I thought it was excellent. Being born in Tucson and with the whole "Dillinger was captured at Hotel Congress" thing for my whole life, it was great to finally get the rest of the story on Dillinger. I was a little disappointed with the time they spent on the Tucson portion, but I suppose the fact that he was captured here WAS the main part, not what else happened while in Tucson. Otherwise, I thought it was great, GO SEE IT!!!! I do have to say, it was really loud and scared me everytime they shot their Tommy Guns.... but even that was kind of COOL!

Public Enemies is a good, solid period drama, with occasional bursts of action. It's the first 'serious blockbuster' of the summer, offering movie-goers something with a little more substance than giant fighting robots, flashy spaceships, or museum pieces coming to life. Film students studying cinematography or sound design would probably have a field day over this. However, it falls into some pacing and story problems that keep this movie just shy of greatness. Certainly it isn't a bad picture by any means, just one that may get lost in the awards rush by the end of the year.

I really enjoy stories of this era and I love how John Dillenger is poised as a hero. However, the movie was at least 30 minutes too long and moved way too slow. I really enjoyed the bank robbery scenes, escapes from jail, and the gunfight at bohemia but everything in between was too slow for me.
Johnny Depp was amazing as always and I liked Christian Bale as well. I enjoyed the movie, but would probably fast forward through some of the boring parts if watching at home.

Boy was the depression beautiful to look at. Other than that, this was one silly movie. The violence was more than cartoonish. It was like the movie Dick Tracy except it took itself seriously. Even if you believed the characters for a second, you couldn't be interested in them. There was nothing there. Depp was cashing a paycheck. His Franco-Native American moll was ridiculous. The only thing interesting about Crudup as Hoover was trying to guess if he matched De Niro in Raging Bull for the most weight gained for a role award (unless it was pillows and digital jowls but who cares). Christian Bale gave his usual intensity as a substitute for intelligence reading. The only good, believable performance Stephen Lang in a small role.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

There is no story here. If you like one scene after another of shoot-em-up, then this movie is for you. But there was no character development, nothing that told you how John Dillinger came to be Dillinger, and what in Pervis' personality led him to quit the FBI and kill himself years later. And the cinematograhy was too close and in your face making it hard to figure out what was actually happening, going on. Shakey camera work was annoying. BIG disappointment.

There's just something about this movie that didn't quite connect for me, despite good performances and great production design. I think it's because you're not given anyone to root for, even Dillinger (who wasn't exactly a nice guy). Having said that, this film is light years ahead of garbage like "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."

Depp and Cotilliard have excellent chemistry but the script's a bit thin. Director Mann did a tremendous job of pulling together a top notch cast (Crudup, Bale, Giovanni Ribisi and Stephen Lang to name a few) and crew to tell the final year of the Dillinger story. Don't expect a lot of background and too much character development. Do expect great action, gorgeous costumes, authentic sets and a fantastic score. It's a good solid gangster movie with a tragic love story at the core, a pleasant surprise. Not perfect but definitely memorable and enjoyable.
