Incredibly boring. Nothing is happening here. When you are supposed to care about the love relationship, it's like these two people hardly know each other much less are greatly in love. This movie is a waste of time. I hate to say this because there are some great actors involved and I'm a big fan of Michael Mann. This just misses on every level.

Bale's character was dry and boring with no personality, he had no story other than chasing gangsters. Depp was good, so was Cotillard. But I'm sure there was a big meeting of studion bean counters after they saw the final cut: there are lots of talented (and well paid) actors who have non speaking roles! Emile de Ravin, Leelee sobieski, and channing tatum don't even speak! I understand cameos, but casting them and then cutting their parts out seems money wasted.

My wife actually loved this movie and thought it was great. And I think it gave a great feel for the time.
Personally, I felt like it just missed. The story seemed to drag in some places. There were times I didn't care about the characters or what they were doing. There were a bunch of story lines that were hinted at but never developed.
Depp did an amazing job. I didn't particularly care for Bale's attempt at a southern accent; it sounded forced to me but I'm from Texas and Purvis was from South Carolina, iirc, and we have very different accents so I'll give him a pass.

It was actually a little slow for what I was expecting, which was good considering we were sitting in the 3rd row of a packed theater. Johnny Depp was terrific, but I think the script could have used a little more work.

OMG! This HAS to be the MOST BORING MOVIE EVER MADE! The movie spends WAY too much time on background and development than on anything entertaining to keep you interested in remaining in the theatre. along with dillinger, liked that other characters pretty boy floyd and baby face nelson were in the movie, along with their fellow crooks. the lawmen were just as fierce as the bad guys so the story was a good see-saw. stage/movie sets and period clothes were terrific.

It wasn't lack of acting that made me dislike this movie. It was the lack of script and character development. I didn't feel as though I knew the characters, their motives, or their complex relationships. The action scenes were amazing -- I felt as though I was in the middle of the shootouts. However, they were spread between long stretches of move that was just dull.
Johnny Depp played Dillinger with depth and emotion -- awesome, as usual. Christian Bale mumbled his way through his role as Melvin Purvis, and did nothing to make me like or empathize with his character. Billy Crudup, as J. Edgar Hoover, was intense, but underutilized.
Overall, the movie seemed too long and too slow for a gangster flick.

Great movie--stuck to the true story other than they didn't really embellish his actual robberies. He is known for robbing in very creative and outlandish ways, such as pretending to be scoping out the bank for a robbery seen for a movie and everyone in the bank is thrilled to be a part of this, except that really they are being robbed.

Johnny Depp gave a really good performance to the role of John Derringer. I thought he captured the complexity of the man who was one of this county's legendary popular heros and at the same time, a legendary criminal.

Enjoyed the film primarily for the cinemtography. Alot of dark tones and over the top deep shadows. The story was familiar for this genre and there were no surprises. Reminded me of the remake of "The Untouchables" with Kevin Costner. The carnage was extensive and graphic. Not for the light of heart looking for a romance story which is imbedded in the drama.

Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard, Billy Crudup and Christian Bale all do a marvelous job in making this film work. However, Michael Mann's visual experimentation with high definition video cameras is absolutely stunning! Three scenes stand out: (1) Dillinger's breakout from a jail in Ohio, taking a police car with his gang and a hostage, waiting at a traffic light; (2) Purvis and his crew sneaking up on a location in Wisconsin where Dillinger is holed up; (3) Where Dillinger tempts fate by sneaking into the office where the "Dillinger Squad" is working. This is a dazzling film. Go see it!

Great movie, but a bit too long in my opnion. Could have been a bit tighter within the storyline. Depp was amazing and gave the right amount of depth to his character. Marion Cotillard was fantastic and her releationship with Depp was intense. Bale - found his character harder to "get into" early in the film but was better as the film went on.The music was great - love jazz - but Billie Holliday did not record until after the period in which the film was set so a bit of a faux pas there. Still - would highly recommend it to others!

It was a good movie. It was action-packed. It showed how the law enforcement folks handled crimminals in their day. Not questions, just shoot to kill the bad guys. Hoover was hard nosed and did not respect his own people- Ruining peoples lives.

The movie seemed a little shallow and characters weren't well developed. (I love live theater.) Photography was beautiful. I wanted to see the Milwaukee and and Columbus, WI settings. I think they used the same bank setting for multiple bank holdups.

Depp gives his usual transcendant performance and immersion into the character, Crudup as an early FBI days Hoover building up his secret policia is chilling while Bale is sad the Dillinger case was the one brief fleeting point of life in Purvis' career and Hoover more or less abandoned him after that. The movie seemed to be filmed in almost veiled sepia tones with maybe too much focus on Purvis & no emotion on his part. Depp lights up the screen - truly as the character. The ending is the typical one we've all been fed but the title is telling: not only were Dillinger & hus buddies Public Enemies - so were he and Purvis. Yet Dillinger was astute enough to see how eerie similar their mindsets were.

I read some of the other reviews in which people said they were disappointed, & even though I was too in one respect, I was still absolutely AWED by this movie. JOHNNY DEPP WAS THIS MOVIE!! OMG, he was pure eye candy to look at, & was absolutely AMAZING in this role, really amazing, & so perfect in his performance. The way I was disappointed was that the movie didn't show enough of the bank robberies, & actually ended too soon, I thought. I could have sat there for at least another 45 minutes. I feel that there was too much story, & not enough time was given to fully develop it. HOWEVER, still highly recommend it, & will DEFINITELY be going back to see it again!
