I really enjoyed this one. Depp was great as usual. I enjoyed Bales role as Melvin Purvis maybe a little more than Depps Dillinger. The Purvis character was a little more complicated than the Dillinger character. He was chosen by Hoover to bring down Dillinger. Purvis had to do his job, had to make sure Hoover looked good and also had to try to stay true to himself. Very little or no time was spent on these characters backgrounds. This is who they are don't worry how they got there. I enjoyed that angle.

Too long and too repetitive to make their historical point. Johnny Depp is only partially seen for the first half until all his costars are killed off. Then he is the actual star of the second half. Oops... for there to be a spoiler I'd have to reveal something about the plot.... there isn't one. Woof, what a boring movie! Nothing happened! If it was cut to just have the shootouts, it would be a great 23 minute movie! I so never ended up caring for the poor, poor criminals or the people that loved them. I ended up wishing the credits would roll.... but i had to wait for over an hour for that to happen!. Lots of great actors miscast and wasted in a movie that nothing happened in. (Also, Depp and Bale's roles should have been reversed) Should not have even gone straight to video. I'm not joking..... skip Public Enemies.

While Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard, Billy Crudup and Christian Bale came through with rich, engaging performances the script seemed to fall flat. Depp's lines were occasionally powerful but could have gone deeper. He was John Dillinger but i left wondering more about his relationships to his crew, who he watched die one by one. I would watch it again but more for the art direction. 1930s Chicago looks amazing.

This movie had some excellent shoot em' up action scenes, but a story that lacked any real depth/character development. Additionally, it tries to get suddenly melodramatic about halfway through the movie which really just doesn't work. Also some major logistical/common sense errors (traveling long distances in 20 minutes, the FBI being portrayed as 1/100 as smart as Dillinger). Overall, pretty average but entertaining if you're bored.

I really loved the film. what's not to love about the 1930's and a ganster like dillinger? but didn't he live an exceptionally exciting life already? if you're gonna capitalize on someone's REAL LIFE have the decency not to change it for your own agenda. you have an oppertunity to teach us something about this man. if you're too lazy to write your own material don't take a man's life and change it around to suit your own needs. make up a story...be a writer and write...don't steal truths AND make stuff up. but i really loved the film. i heard an electric guitar in the score and thought "no they didn't!" but i researched afterward and discovered that there was a company in 1931 producing electric guitars for public sale. i learned something!

This is an extremely well-made movie. The acting is very good. Same with the dialog, camerawork, costumes. All the details are there. So I think it must have been the intention of the writer/director to make a cold-as-chrome and just as smooth-surfaced movie that is as remarkable as a robot actually dancing "The Robot." There's nothing to hold onto in this movie, you just appreciate everything and leave the theater never having connected.

Violent, creative, deep, thoughtful. Those are the qualities that this movie expressed. This is not your average gangster movie.
Michael Mann tries some nice techniques with filming by interchanging film and digital video.
I liked it. Not the most amazing film, but the acting was good, the cinematography was quite nice, and the story keeps your focus.
However if you liked Speed or most summer blockbusters, (B-) films, you won't like this.

I thought this film was overall good, but it is long and slow in several spots. Johnny Depp is a great actor. I think they could have tighten it up a bit to make it flow faster. It seemed like they were making an Epic movie or a Saga.
I'd recommend it as a rental just to watch Johnny Depp. At least at home you can pause it and get up and move around. You can go back to it when ever you want.

I thought this was a great movie. Johnny Depp as always was superb. The characters were a little difficult to follow, but there's no way they could make a film about John Dillinger and get everything in. I've read some of the other reviews. This was a historial period piece. I suppose because it didn't have lasers, fast cars, robots, and a lot of fancy effects, people got bored. I still wonder where they found al those old cars?

The movie wasn't boring, but lacked direction and focus in a number of scenes. The writing wasn't bad. . . it wasn't the best either. I think people should still go see it although nobody in this picture will be nominated for an Oscar.

For all the gunfights in this movie, it was really pretty boring. Johnny Depp is a good actor, but the script was really quite dull. Also, the scenes between Johnny Depp and Marion Cottillard weren't very good. They lacked chemistry.

Script is flat and unimaginative. The only thing that saved this is Depp's performance, which is terrific, and several other smaller roles are done quite well, Jason Clarke, Stephen Dorff, and Peter Gerety in particular. Marion Cotillard was interesting, as was Lili Taylor in the two woman's roles. Much of the script left too many loose ends and inexplicable escapes, explanations and just plain incongruous situations. As a BioPic, I'd rather have watched Mommie Dearest: at least it had some life in it!

Although the movie is swell overall and Depp's performance is, as usual, stunning, the characters lack depth and the plot detail. The historical aspect could have been played up more while the movie itself concentrated on the action/adventure moments excessively. Well executed yet a better screenplay would have gotten more out of a great story. Worth your time, though, even if it's not perfect.

Johnny Depp does a masterful job depicting John Dillinger. The story is good and the period setting is well done. The perspective is a little unnerving. It seemed as if the entire film was shot from within six feet of the characters so the cuts were jumpy and the actors were right in your face. The suits and unshaven aspect of many of the characters made it dificult to tell one from the other and who were the good guys and who were the bad guys.
