This is a very eccentric self mocking small art house film with many funny moments but it is not a standard comedy. There are lots of clever inside jokes directed at High School, acting, provincial attitudes, free speech, and especially forgiveness. Director Fleming uses over the top raw emotion both sad and funny to very slowly build his story. It is worth the wait. Like Hamlet, its the play within the play. The student play Hamlet 2 is so over the top that it works. Not only is it funny and well staged, but it actually has a valid message. Coogan, Keener, and Shue give perfect performances. But its the kids who really shine. Think of it as Hamlet in the Hood on acid. If it seems odd and slow, just hang in there and expect the unexpected!

Well I have to admit I went into this movie with very high expectations... probably not the best idea! Hamlet 2 was a good movie, nothing to special, but still a decent piece of work. I wouldn't take someone who couldn't catch the constant pop culture references and I would not recomend walking out of the movie. What I noticed was the movie started out bad, real bad, and worked its way up to a point where I wished it would never end! Its a little bumby at the begining but ends strong. Rock Me Sexy Jesus? I wanted to see Hamlet 2 mainly because it starred Steve Coogan. I was entertained for the entire movie. From the opening with the Herpes commerical, to Steve's dead-on impression of Jeremy Irons, I laugh out loud the entire film. Of course there are parts where liberties were taken concerning education, but it was a very funny and entertaining movie.

Hamlet 2 has a lot to work with: Strong acting, a solid concept, and campy but good music. But the movie never seems sure whether it wants to sting the right or to mock the culture war on all sides or to showcase its play-within-a-movie. The indictment was too weak . The parody of the cultural divide didn't work because it never takes itself seriously enough be satire. And the good time that the musical could have been didn't happen because it was too scattered and the tension we were supposed to be feeling while the "barbarians were at the gates" outside the cinema was nonexistent. Still, it's funny, colorful, there's a hot latino teen in it, and the gay men's chorus singing "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" was so wacky it won me over.

"Hamlet 2" came up just a bit short of fresh. Don't get me wrong... this movie is funny. The story is even well-structured and the idea showed some originality, but the focus gets lost many times during the film. Hence, this 90 minute movie could have used a good 10 to 15 minutes of cutting, and these minutes should have been replaced with scenes that focused the story more and hooked the audience into the goals of the characters. One thing worth mentioning was the brilliant work of Steve Coogan. Coogan showed himself to be a continually emerging star for his humor and timing. Definitely worth a look on DVD.

This movie tries to hard. The best part of this movie are when the credits roll and you are released from this awful awful movie. The jokes were all over the place, no structure to this movie at all. Go see Tropic Thunder or Stepbrothers. Do not bother with this. AWFUL!

This movie isn't sure what it wants to be. It teeters between an obscene dark comedy and a commercially acceptable film. There are consitant laughs and a few laugh out loud moments. The problem is the movie wants to be all things to all people. It never takes a stance and declares what it wants to be. That said, it's light and easy comedy. I would recommend the movie to people who like this type of odd ball comedy.

This is a movie that you enjoy from the 1st fake T.V. commercials to the final scene in _____ (no I won't spoil it for you) Although this is a fairly predictable concept...down and out teacher inspires his students, as well as himself, to band together and create something larger that all their issues combined. However, the honesty in the performances, the surprises along the way and the laughs make this worth the ridiculous theater prices we are forced to pay for a good print, decent sound and floor that doesn't stick to the bottom of your shoes!

I found the movie rather dull until Amy Poehler arrived on screen, but that's not until about 2/3 of the way through. Some of the scenes from the musical are great, but I'm not sure it's worth sitting through the rest of the movie. Maybe on DVD?
