A friend convinced me to see this. I am glad she did -- it was a terrific movie with wonderful cinematology! It was nothing like I expected. Kept us on the edge of our seats. It was a bit long, but the movie did give me reason to stop and think about what it would be like in real life. Would give this 5 stars!

This is every airport, earthquake and inferno flick rolled into one, only not as good. A movie could be made about all of the technical impossibilities and another about the impractabilities contained in the over two hour visual earache that was this saga.
At least it had political correctness, Biblical allusion and black and white moral preachiness going for it.
My kids liked it and I didn't spoil it for them with my opinions. My recommendation is drop your kids off at this one and see something else.

This is a very visual movie with very interesting effects. It rates a "0" for any original content regarding the plot. Other than one twist as to the premise of the plot. If you take a scene from all the natural disaster/invasion films over the past 5 years and combine them, you have pretty much already seen this film with a few technology updates.

Saw it again last night for the THIRD time with a dear friend who hadn't. We both had a BLAST! Best roller coaster ride ever! For a disaster movie it was perfect. It had the perfect number of characters and their stories to keep up with. The perfect number of known stars and the perfect casting every where else. Are you getting the sense that I liked this one? Good.

While I was quite excited bout this movie, I felt it was a disappointment. My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to this excessively long move on Christmas Eve. While the CGI was top notch, the story line lacked finess and plausibility. The movie dragged on as if to convince us it was good. They could have cut 45 min and made it a great flick by explaining more of the "why". I understand it was inferred, global warming, etc. But, I wanted more technical details. Not some spoon fed unlikeliness. And excuse me, why build all the arks in China? I am giving it 3 stars for the special effects, but not for the content.

Wow, we fully enjoyed this movie. The special effects were spectacular. The story line is a bit predictable but still it kept our interest the entire time. No provocative scenes. No bad words. We took a 5 year old and 11 year old and they handled it well but we did prepare them that it was make believe and that the things they would see were computer generated.

Roland, Independence Day, Emmerich has made yet another action packed screen filling wild ride of dynamic special effects laden movie once again. His scripts are far from intellectual, but the action is always over the top as are the special effects. Disaster pron! That's right. Pure and simple and nothing more.
The plot was boilerplate. The acting was effective within its rigid stereotype limits. The "science" of the film was beyond ludicrous. The "amazing sensational hairbreadth escapes" actually got a bit tiresome as they happened so repetitively. But it was the visuals which made up for it all.
The visuals of Los Angeles self destructing alone were worth the price of admission. But then, I caught a mid-day matinee show and thus didn't pay the evening price.

I don't expect a movie to be all about realism but this movie went way off the edge. I mean making statements about the Mayans predicting the end of the world and showing earthquakes as though they have a line of destruction that you can somehow run away from? I won't even go into the poor storyline and weak character development. And when a woman asks me 'where have you been all my life?' 28 days after her previous man gave his life trying to save hers I'm gonna jump off the ship to keep from being next. The effects were ok but nothing as impressive as people have been ranting about. Cut about and hour and 38 minutes off and put tape over a couple of the characters mouths and it would have been much more enjoyable.

It isn't very realistic, sure - but it's kind of fun and really pretty suspenseful.
If you grew up with the old disaster movies like "Earthquake" and the "Towering Inferno" this is a modern twist on those.

There were far too many times when the main and supporting characters should have been dead or at least injured. I went against my better judgment and went to this movie knowing it was going to be unbelieveable and should have listened. waste of time.

the film is fine, silly vapid entertainment but not insulting. However I was exceedingly disappointed after I drove 45 minutes to Tampa to see it on an IMAX and found it was really "IMAX lite" which is essentially a movie screen, only NOT IMAX. what a gyp!
never do that again.

The special effects were amazing. No surprise there. However, I was surprised at how the story moved me. The whole idea of the world ending on a certain date predicted by an extenct race seemed so over the top that I expected to giggle during the "acting" parts of the the movie. That was changed by Danny Glover(President) and two other "Dads" in the film (jazz musicians on a cruise ship). They brought it home for me what the end would mean. How do you look your children in the eye and explain to them the world is ending....right now!! Nothing funny here folks. If you have a heart at all, or children, you'll feel this one.
