Lots of flashbacks, dreams, etc make this movie confusing at times. You definitely need to pay close attention. The only problem is, even with close attention, the ending leaves you with so many possible scenarios that it really doesn't have an ending. It reminds me of The Shining but isn't as good because there is no real finality to it. The music is a little over the top also; Very Hitchcock like without the Hitchcock suspense.
That being said, it's a must see film..but I'd wait for the less expensive rental version.

This movie keeps you entertained for much of the time, but it falls short just about when it's about to conclude, giving away the mystery in the final 10 minutes, explaining every single detail. I wont give away anything, but i think that the spectator must discover things by himself, not by the help of explanation. I wish the ending would be better. The film is very well shot, and has beautiful HD image. Music is a little bit underwhelming (me being a film composer), and tends to over exaggerate make it overly dramatic.
In the end you can feel the Scorsese sense here and there, but you can't feel his mastery of movie making that can be felt in other pictures.

The scenery and special effects along with strong actinng by Leonardo kept me at the edge of my seat. I felt the movie could have explored Leonardo's character in recovery better. Not crazy about the ending but I woud highly recommend seeing this intriguing puzzle.

Well nothing what I expected but still a decent take. The movie has so many flashbacks and cuts to stuff it gets a bit confusing. The ending is a surprise and well a bit of a let down for me. If you are looking for a horror movie, you won't find it here.

Loved it. Every part of it. The filming. The music. The sound effects. I was looking to go out and relax, watch a movie without dissapointment and I was well served by Dicaprio. He is a phenomenal actor and this movie proves it as it does Martin as a director. If you're looking for good acting/directing, suspense and entertainment, you should definately see this movie.

If you like mystery and suspense, you'll more than likely appreciate this film. It was not what I expected and the end made it worth the parts where you just wanna know what is really going on and leave. Probably better watching it twice....if you can stomach some parts.

There was too much that made no sense. Who was crazy/what was real was so hard to figure out that I was very uncomfortable. I walked out in the middle. The second time in my life that I have done that.

Unfortunately I figured out what was going on pretty early into this film. The cast is very good, especially DiCaprio. There were a few scenes in which I found myself wanting to leave. It's just such a disturbing film that seems to go on forever. Definitely not in my top 10 favorite films. Not sure I could put it in my top 100.

This was not the same caliber of film I have come to expect from DiCaprio & Scorsese. The performances were great. However, I found the story to be somewhat predictable and slow. Definitely NOT on the same level as The Departed or Gangs of New York. :(

Going in I wasn't sure what to expect of Shutter Island. Just watching the movie, you knew something wasn't quite right with the investigation and the lack of cooperation Leo and Ruffalo's characters were getting from the prison staff. It wasn't until the very end, that everything from the very start of the movie made sense. This is one of those movies that are great to see a second time around. Terrific movie from Scorsese and great performances from both Leo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo.

The acting, cinematography and art direction were well done, but some judicious editing was what this movie lacked. There were also a couple of points where the story didn't make sense. It was clear why it was done that way, but certainly not the best storytelling. I'm sure that when a director like Scorsese wants something a certain way, very few people question it. In fact, I believe this movie could be suffering from a case of The-emperor-has-no-clothes disorder.

Scrcese knows how to make a movie. I have to assume that this is how cinema looked like in the 40s and 50s. I was on edge the entire movie. Dicaprio is great as a paranoid. As the wacther it hard not believe what you seeing is not the truth. And the whole dynaic between Ben Kingsley, Leo, and Mark ruffalo is superb. I recommend this film to anyone

Wait for DVD! 1st 2/3 of movie was good (music way overdone!) Last 1/3 was a suckfest. It's like the writer quit and they had to make up a new ending, but didn't want to pay the first writer, so they had to change at least 20% of the story. Overall Grade C-.
