i hadn't read the book prior to the movie. What a good movie, although in the middle I did think it was cheesey. What an ending, I did not expect the twist. I love Leonard DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo and all the actors what a great cast. very intertaining

Scorsese can make a bad movie, in case you were wondering...Leo gives a good performance, but the story is weak, and been done before. Wanted to leave half way thru. Don't bother seeing it in the theatre, at "best" you should wait until it reaches On Demand. C-

The movie was very well done. The acting was great. It was suspenseful to the end. However, I feel like I need to see it again to put all the pieces together for myself. Overall I thought it was great and should've been rated higher by the experts.

Overall, this was agood movie,but this is my style of plot. Ity had me thinking at the end that I wasn't who I thought I was. Go see this if you like psychological thrillers!

From the previews I thought I was going to see a disturbing ,psychological horror story. This movie delivers all of that. See it in the theater to get the full effect. The cinematography had me feeling like I was in a real life scary amusement park ride but the end was quite sobering and terrifying. I was reminded of The Shining.

Settled in to be "scared" and wowed by the pairing of Scorsese and DiCaprio...and was woefully disappointed. Virtually nothing scary - the promos were sooo misleading. And, honestly, kept thinking "THIS is a Scorsese movie?" But what I thought of mostly was - "this movie is awful!" Will say this: the last 15-20 minutes made suffering through the whole boring movie - almost - tolerable.
Don't waste your time.

I enjoyed this movie. I read the book before I saw it, so it was interesting to see the characters develop while knowing the end. The movie stuck very close to the book. DiCaprio put in a very good performance.

Compared to Mullholland Drive, another psychological thriller, this one was a walk in the park and actually provides, most would agree, a manageable number of conclusions. Unfortunately, I like neat little conclusions and this movie did not have that. Overall, it had good performances by the whole cast and an intriguing story. Just don't think about it too much.

This movie is a huge waste of time and your hard earn money. DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE. The acting is mediocre and the plot and story line have been done so many times. When you get the final twist its like realizing you eat something bad. Then you get to wait for another 30 minutes of Martin Scorcese trying to justify the ending. Scrocese shouldnt be allowed to make anymore movies. This goes to show us how brain dead the Hollywood execs are and they are stuck remaking old B movies. There isnt any originality left. With CGI at its current level there are so many wonderful SciFi and Fantasy books that they can finally bring to the screem but they are only interested in huge profits and scare silly to make some thing original.

I'm on the fence with this movie. The movie has a great and genius plot, but I think it could have been developed so that would have caught the attanetion of the viewer (i.e. a more fast paced development of teh story). Ever since I saw the trailers (last year) I figured what the plot was all about, but I expected it to be a more fascinating one, just like previous movies from teh director. Again, great plot just at least 50 minutes too long.

It suspenseful, and definitely good, but the trailer was deceptive. The ending almost ticks you off because your definitely not expecting what happens. You really need to see it a couple of times. I think its one of those you either really like it or really don't like it.

This is a definite rental! I had it figured out within the first 45 minutes! The movie was long. My husband and I did disagree about the ending which we are still talking about, but just because it has a decent end doesn't make up for the marginal acting and sometimes cheesy background and overly loud music; sometimes you can't hear what the actors are saying. Not what it's hyped up to be! Seriously, wait until it comes out as a rental!

Not sure seeing it twice would help me to figure out what was the real truth. I believe that's what the writer wanted, as he couldn't come to a conclusion either. A very exciting film full of suspense, but too long. Kind of the same thing with "The Lovely Bones". Left scratching my head at the end also. I wouldn't buy it. Thank you

To those who did not like this movie...I understand. The ending left me a bit confused...the first time I saw it. This movie transforms and you become an insider the second time you watch it. It all becomes clear as long as you pay attention to the clues given throughout the movie. I hated this movie the first time I saw it. Now it is one of my top ten! Brilliant!!

Great movie! Even for a 2 1/2hr movie it kept me on edge the entire time. Always guessing what would happen next and always surprised. Leo was great as well as Michelle Wilams, whom I think deserves recognition as best supporting actress for this role. My husband dragged me out to see this & now I'm going to get my friends to see it with me a 2nd time.

I did not look forward to seeing this movie after viewing the trailer. I am SO glad I went anyway. I could see again and again. It is packed with drama, provoking questions, twists and turns, lots of mental health issues. Sort of an intense Beautiful Mind plus film.

The trailers pitched a slasher, horror film, but Shutter Island was so much more. Dullards are whining online because they didn't understand the end. Uh, that's the point. Good creative work leaves the perception up to the viewer. How did this film end? It's up to you.
Like fine wine, Martin Scorsese is aging beautifully. The work and his art keeps getting better. Shutter (or should it be 'Shudder') Island is a brilliantly crafted and acted psychological thriller. A whodunit, a riddle wrapped in an enigma, call it what you will, but see it and decide for yourself.

I read Lehane's book before seeing the movie. Most of the time, the movie is a disappointment after the book, but NOT this time! Lahane and Kalogridis did a brilliant job adapting the book to a script. Visually - stunning! DiCaprio - hats off to you. I've never been a huge fan, but wow - what a performance. Scorsese - masterful.
I'm impressed. If you're expecting a slasher/horror flick you'll be VERY disappointed. If you want a mind bending "who done it" by the author of "Gone, Baby Gone", don't miss it.

When will Leonardo DiCaprio be recognized for the talent he is? Shudder Island showcased his range perfectly. The movie is bleak, riveting, and downright creepy. Once again Scorsese and DiCaprio wow the audience with their vision on the delicate topic of mental instability. The twist at the end was done perfectly, with Leo proving once again that he is this generation's leading man. I highly recommend this film to anyone who wants to be absorbed into a movie that makes you think.

I thought the movie was ok. Found it a little hard to follow with the appearances and disappearances of dead or supposedly dead people. The ending left me kind of hanging on what really happened. Had he really been there for 24 months? Or had he been there only 2 days and they jacked with him?? HMMMM

The movie was well produced and had a lot of things to look back at. You'll be thinking about the little details that were well placed throughout the film for days to come. Also, the movie was a little long but was justified because of the plot twists involved. If you're into thrillers then go for it. I was personally a little disappointed with how the movie ended, but my wife loved it so I have to give it a 4 out of 5.
