I think that this is one of Martin Scorsese's best. Never boring, full of great actors (Max von Sydow!!), and I did wonder what his crazy dreams had to do with anything--a lot it turned out. Dennis Lehane knows how to construct a good story and Scorsese knows how to show it. It's typical of Scorsese with his in-your-face style. It seems to go in several different directions but it's going a completely different path than you really think. Story within a story.

Martin Scorcese does a good job of taking what could have been a ho hum movie plot and wringing out the suspense.I will admit that I was expecting more of a horror style plotline, but that was not the case for this film. I was surprised at Leonardo DiCaprio's performance which does draw you in. Ben Kingsley is, as always, a remarkable presence as the sympathetic psychiatrist on Shutter Island. Some may think that perhaps Scorcese did drag things out a bit by making this film 2 hours long, but I did not feel that it was that long.

I really didn't want to see the movie but wife did, we went, I actually liked it much more than I expected, the trailers make it look much different than the actual is, looks like a real terror type, but has a much more interesting story line...enjoyable

It was a good movie, however, as noted above, predictable, both my wife and I figured out what was going on halfway into the movie. It was a good movie, and was glad I saw it but as mentioned very predictable and there was no element of surprise or shock for us.

It's really suspensful from the very beginning, the cast and performances are terrific but sometimes the pacing feels a little "off" - but in general it's a good film.
BUT, what really spoiled it for me is the post-release marketing. The whole thing in the TV ads about how "it's the most shocking ending in years" REALLY spoils the entire movie. Because of that, you sorta guess where this is all going within the first 5 minutes and just sit through the ride (albeit in a stressful and entertaining manner) until it finally unfolds.
It remains a very good film but I would have much preferred figuring out the "shocking ending" on my own.

i am into psychological thrillers. this movie kept me guessing all the way and before it ended i knew that DiCaprio was the "crazy one". over-all, i loved watching it! i want to watch it again. The dialogues preceding the conclusion of the movie was so symbolic. Good job!

The whole part of the movie that dealt with the killing of 3 kids, and the showing of them drowned in a lake by their mother was over the top. Everyone leaving the cinema was just miserable at the end. A definite get me out of here and get me home mood.

not the best movie ever, but definally good. kept you guessing to the end. even though i knew that he'd be crazy in some way, i was still questioning whether or not the staff at the hospital was messing with him or not until the very end.
very sad ending, especially for parents of small children.

I found this movie to be extremely slow and boring. Interesting at times but slow getting there. Way too long but thought the ending was well done. Some interesting twists but things moved so slow it was easy to predict the outcome. Acting was good.

Unfortunately, I had the end figured out before the lead characters got off the ferry at the start of the movie. I think I would have enjoyed it more if the mystery had been a little less obvious. It was still a good movie and worth the money. My wife enjoyed it very much (she wasn't as quick to catch on).

My wife and I went to see this movie the other night and were quite surprised at the quality. We are not great Leonardo fans, but his acting in this one was very good. The movie as a whole had lots of action and exceptional special effects, but not too much. And the others stars helped pull off a very good flow till the end. Great twist for an outcome. Had a feeling it was that way, but as the movie moves along, I wasn't quite sure. A must see

It's a great 2nd time movie (can't tell you more). You will see Mr. DiCaprio and Mr. Ruffalo in an extraordinary performance, as well the entire Staring!
Music is gorgeous, but you will understand it the 2nd time, no way the first.

It was amazing! Leonardo did very very well with his role. Specifics and details from the book were portrayed very well which is hard to do. I loved the twist in the end (even though i knew it) caught me by suprise anyway^^ Its an amazing film and not a boring moment in it.

Great representation of the book. If you read the book prior to seeing the movie, it flows well and follows fairly closely for the better part of the movie. If you haven't read the book first there may be some gaps for you. Definitely disturbing, a bit scary at times, and GREAT acting by Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley. Only downside I saw was that where there was no closure in the book, the movie gives closure- not a big fan, that was one of the best parts of the book. Without the fantastic work of Scorsese and great acting from the cast, the movie would have been a total flop.

Well put together and just when you think you have it figured out, you realize how far off you were. Kept me involved the whole time and didn't really have any slow parts. Music seemed forced, but otherwise, solid movie and was glad I went.

The story line was pretty good. I thought it was a little slow at first. I was very surprised at the ending. Was really not what I expected and was very good. Took me a minute to REALLY realize what happened at the every end, but I gave it a "WOW". I will rent it when it comes out to pay more attention.

DiCaprio was tremendous. It all comes together in the end and makes you feel it was well worth the time invested.
A second viewing would probably enable you to pay more attention to the flash backs and better understand all that happens...just like Alfred used to do.

'Shutter Island' is a great study of mind over matter. What is real, and what is imaginary? The movie is so well done that it may leave you questioning your own view of reality. The casting is perfect, and the acting superb. The elements of federal officers, mid-twentieth century psychology, WWII aftereffects, a former prison island, and a huge storm, were woven together beautifully into a wonderful atmosphere of mystery, danger, and suspense. If you are not easily confused, I think you will love this movie. I think that most of the people who didn't like it couldn't figure out what had happened, or couldn't reconcile the ending with the rest of the movie. I did, and I loved it!

I really enjoyed the picture, and the film was well presented and the cast was on target. DiCaprio gives one of his best performances since The Aviator. I will admit it's one of those pictures well you really only need to see it once. If you see it more than that, its really looses its power.
