This movie had a very slow start. I enjoyed the surprise ending but it took too long to get there. If I waited to see it on cable, I probably would have stopped watching; but since I spent the money on tickets, I am a little glad that I watched it all the way through to get to the end.

The previews do not do this picture justice...it looks like a horrow/hatchet type but is truely a "Hitchcock" ending. Great acting by L.C.

Before going to see this movie I was a bit concerned about it being over 2 hours. Usually when a movie is that long I start to get bored and you can "tell" it's a long movie, but not this one.
Shutter Island keeps your attention and has you hooked from the start. The cinematography is amazing, the feel of the movie was very dark and disturbing but it all fit.
Very entertaining!

While I was entertained the whole time, this movie was not at all what I had anticipated. The plot twist was supposed to be so unexpected, but I had it figured in the first half hour of the movie. I will always love Leonardo DiCaprio, and his performance was stellar, but the movie left something to be desired.

I felt the film was an excellently done psychological thriller/drama.
DiCaprio's performance was of Oscar caliber
Thought all the supporting cast did an excellent job as well.
The storyline delivered an excellent depiction of one man's journey through the universal themes of sin, guilt, penance, and redemption in one man's life.

What makes this movie great is the way it makes you think. Not just about the ending or how it will end but what leads to the end. I saw this movie two days ago and I am still thinking about some of the twists that lead up to the end. Bravo!!!!!

Having not read the book and not knowing anything about the story, I was completely immersed in the ambience of this film. It was immediately reminiscent of the work of the late, great Stanley Kubrick. Even some of the cinematography reminded me of 'The Shining.' But it wasn't derivative. The acting was first rate and subtle. Tensions moved just below the surface with all of the supporting cast. Mr. DiCaprio performance gave us an excellent look into the paranoia that comes from living with the past and what could have been. I did not see the ending coming, but suspected something was amiss very early on. I love Martin Scorsese and would love to see him venture into this genre again. This movie is a definite 'must see.'

Shutter Island was one of my all time favorite books. I was hesitant to see how it would translate to the big screen. The magic of Scorsese and DiCaprio worked. And even though I knew the ending, I was on the edge of my seat the whole show. Loved it!

Leonardo DiCaprio is an amazing actor! This was one of those movies with a suspensful twist yet you don't get lost in it. It really puts a perspective on the mentally ill. We look at them and think they're just crazy yet in their minds they're perfectly normal. An amazing job by Scorsese and his cast.

An interesting vehicle for DiCaprio to exhibit his range and intensity. The other actors in the movie are good actors in their own right but have little to do but give LDi his space; which he uses quite effectively. Not too surprising but very engaging. Adults will enjoy the inter-play and the 1950's atmosphere.

Leo deCaprio is one of the finest actors of his generation. His performance-as well as the rest of the cast-is outstanding. The story is engaging, Scorsese's direction is excellent and it is beautifully filmed. My criticisms have to do with the expectations set by the ad campaign which imply it is about the supernatural. Sorry Ghostbuster, it ain’t. What it IS about is much more complex and interesting. Because of the hype it seemed way too long. I figured it out an hour in and spent the next hour anticipating the twist. There was none. That would have been okay if they had injected a little ambiguity, but, alas, they did not. So, abandon thoughts of the surprise ending, sit back and lose yourself in the film and enjoy.

This isn't a terrible movie but it's not amazing either. From the overbearing score at the beginning to the over-explanation at the end this movie is a cinematic bludgeoning. Scorsese ditches subtlety and instead makes sure the audience "gets it" by explaining to the point of absurdity and boredom.
This isn't to say the movie doesn't have merit. The acting is superb and much of the movie is beautifully shot with an artistic eye and palette.
In summary this is an enjoyable movie if you want some cheap thrills but overall not one of Scorsese's best.
