I was very disappointed in this movie. I expected a lot more and after nearly 2.5 hours, it failed to deliver. I am curious as to why they made it so long as the overall plot is really quite simple. I have to stay the start of the movie was pretty good. After about 30 minutes I had grasped the overall theme of the movie, and found myself yearning for the end! Not a good movie!

This movie grips you right from the beginning. You know all is not what it seems and the movie keeps you riveted as you try to figure it out. This is an academy award contender.

So much talent to so little avail. Evocative film-making and fine performances are buried under a mountain of too-much care taken with too little material. If somebody had carved out about 30 minutes worth of redundancy, there could have been a good film here. If you can't stand to miss a Scorcese film, go with low expectations and enjoy some cool shots and good moments.

Shutter Island kept my attention all the way through. I liked how it stayed focused on the story without distractions like making his wife look super sexy, everyone blended together. It was the perfect story during my rainy night. If you enjoyed the film The Others, you may enjoy this one too.

Definitely a twist that you weren't expecting; however, movie never really took off. Seemed like there should've been more action and thrills along the way...not as good as I would've expected from Martin Scorsese.

While the acting was excellent,the movie was just ok. The ending was predictable and confusing at the same time. I would recommend this movie to others,but would likely tell them that it was not a horror film but a pyschological thriller.

Do not be fooled by the preview! This is not a horror film - more of a psychological drama. That doesn't mean you shouldn't see it though - I quite enjoyed the film.
Leonardo DiCaprio was excellent as always. The music was VERY dramatic (I almost expected Jaws or Norman Bates' Mom to spring out of one of the cells) - but still fun to listen to. The only drawback is that the twist is easy to guess.
However, I liked the slightly open ending. It leaves the viewer to decide the main character's final fate.

Scorsese rounds up a great troop of character actors, creates an exotic setting, puts a moody plot into action and then...nothing.
Warned by others that "Everything changes in the last five minutes" I was dumbstruck by a story that telegraphed its punches and then failed to deliver a surprise that viewers couldn't have seen coming from an hour or so earlier in the film.
Remarkable actors acting remarkably, I will concede, but ultimately not taking the story anywhere. Occasionally bright (pun intended) cinematography, but nothing that Hitchcock didn't do better 50 years ago.
On balance, a mildly interesting way to waste 138 minutes, but a waste of those minutes nonetheless.

Loved it! Shutter Island was an extreme mind bender. Makes you wonder about the sanity of the writer to have come up with such twists and turns. Very unique. It's one of those movies you need to see twice so you can pay more attention to the clues leading up to the surprise ending.

I guess I was expecting too much excitement but for me it slowly walks through the movie. I was ready for the movie to end. I wanted out of there quick.
Yes the movie has some interesting twist towards the end which made easy conversation of opinions at dinner.
But overall it wasn't great but okay for me.
On the other hand, my fiance thought it was great and he would have given it a 5 star if he was reviewing the movie. He said too bad more movies aren't made like this. I didn't give him time to expand on his thoughts.
Difference of opinion for sure, we both had different views on what really happened but he did say he agreed it could happen the way I saw it but he really enjoyed it.

Nice period piece involving two federal marshals and their search for an alleged missing patient at the fictional "Shutter Island" somewhere near Boston. Scorsese & Co. masterfully provide the audience with a brooding ambiance, via incessant storms; darkened corridors; and the overall brooding notion that things aren't what they seem. Indeed, they are not. Although the twist ending is a surprise, various red herrings allude to the narrative's outcome. My only complaint is the inordinate buildup to the twist ending, which occurs only in the last 30 minutes of the film. Thus, the viewer leaves the two-hour buildup with a rather bland aftertaste for what could have been one of the year's best films.

Not a bad movie, just disappointing because someone told me before that it was like another movie. Made it too easy to figure out what was going on. Otherwise a pretty good movie. Read Lehane's books. He also wrote Mystic River.

I did enjoy this movie - acting / filming / script / sets were all superior.
SPOILER:
The one thing that bugged me in the trailer was when he was asked if he'd "taken any pills" since he'd been on the island. That was just enough for me to suspect the he was a patient shortly into the film... they should be more careful on trailers. Teasers are better.

It startsout as Leonardo DiCaprio as a USMarshall going to the island to investigate a patient.at a mental institution . It has a few flashbacks of events prior to this that are helpful in understanding the movie. The middle was pretty long and was a little boring but the ending was definitely not what you thought it would be. There were some bloody scenes and some death scenes. I would wait until it comes out on video . I did not care for this movie much.

Leo never ceases to amaze! Brilliant performance! I wish I could forget everything that happened so I can go see it all over again! Excellent twists that go in all different directions. And quite possibly the most perfect ending that leaves you questioning everything!
