I have lost all respect for Martin & Leo in this movie. It was a hodge-podge of confusing flashback to scenes of war horror followed by a rediculous premise when the truth is revealed. The last 10 minutes of this movie are a disgusting display of human trauma that deeply offends anyone that has children or loves children. It is akin to graphic depictions of rape being viewed by a rape vicitm. A terrible movie. Please dont see this. Why anoyne would make a movie like this is beyond me. Sick Sick Sick!!!

I go to the movies very often and most of the time they disappoint me. "Shutter Island" had my eyes glued to the screen since it started. Also, I was literally at the edge of the seat the whole time. The acting, dialogue, and camera angle were superb. The story really makes you explore another place in your mind. I felt weird for hours after the movie. "Shutter Island" makes you think, it tests your mind and your perceptions. Whoever gives it a bad review is merely too simple-minded to decipher its message. If you are a true movie-goer that enjoys intellectually stimulating movies, "Shutter Island" is for you. If you're a simple-minded fool that only enjoys action, don't waste your time. This movie is too good for most :)

Kept my interest the whole time, but just a bit too long......I felt there was too much deliberation in some scenes. But, otherwise, it was a sensationally well crafted film, with huge kudos for the acting and directing. I will definitely recommend this movie.

As usual, excellent direction/craftmanship by Martin Scorcese. All of the principles, including DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, and Ben Kingsley gave great performances. The plot kept me second-guessing myself all the way through, even though I actually at one point figured out the ending about halfway through, then decided maybe I was wrong. Also had a few good scares and some epic Scorcese-style violence. Overall a great night at the movies.

Some of the the reviews were dead on. Leo's acting was a little too much at times, it was very choppy as far as the directing, however the overall movie as a whole was very good. I like a movie that leaves me with a little wonder at the end and it left me and my group in wonder coming from many different angles. But I think the previews may have been slightly mislieading and is really what led to the disappointment. I have to agree that Leo seeing ghost was not what I expected and the time frame of it taking places in the 50's sort of threw me as well. But its a good film to see if you're into movies that have more than just the obvious to offer.

My title pretty much sums up my feelings about the movie. With the exception of Mark Ruffalo (sp?), the acting was very good and Leo was terrific. However, the directing was slow and the storyline was choppy. Even though the movie was long, it did hold my attention, but that was primarily because of the acting.

A good movie leaves your mind guessing the entire time....this movie does that and it keeps it guessing the WRONG outcome throughout the movie! In my opinion, it would be nearly impossible to sit through this move and have the ending figured out...and that makes a good movie.
It was suspenseful, has Leo so obviously contains great acting, and what they did with the picture at times was really neat.
This is a movie that in order to fully grasp it's meaning, one has to watch it again to pick up on everything you need to. It makes you think...in a good way!

It was not my favorite DiCaprio/Scorcese movie, but it was good. I thought Dicaprio overacted on occasional. Ruffalo's underacting was good and well suited for its purpose to the movie. I enjoyed the movie very much, and the conversation/assessment it created afterwards. I will say the violins were a little much.

It's a movie that makes you think. You probably will want to discuss the movie after you see it, and then you will end up liking it more than your initial reaction. I think it's just a movie that requires you to look back to totally digest and understand everything that happened.
A group of us went, and we all liked it, but it was the discussion afterward that helped seal the deal.
Although DiCaprio isn't as strong in this performance as he was in The Departed, he is still really good.
I definitely recommend this movie.

Wow, let's watch Leo ACT! I like Leo, but similar to his over the top subdued-ness in Revolutionary Road, he was just trying too hard, as was a very one dimensional Mark Ruffalo.
Without the giving the plot away, I really think this was directed horribly. It was choppy and almost laughable at times with the horrible ghostly appearances of Leo's characters wife and the stupid antics he pulls to discover the truth. Like scaling up and down a 200 ft. sheer cliff wall. The pay off is lackluster in the end. Everything that was supposed to be creepy and scary was just dull. People were applauding at the credits... I assume because they liked it, not because it was over with and we could all get on with our loves.

But I loved it, and the twists and turns in the plot kept me guessing. Just when you think you've gotten the big reveal, you haven't at all. And Leo's last lines in the film make everything worth it (not the mention the brilliant use of Ligeti in the score, and the dream sequences that tie together beautifully in the end).

I went to see this with somewhat high expectations, considering this was Scorsese and all. Even though it was a little predictable in some spots, I wasn't let down. I was on the edge of my seat from the start. It was just a total mind game throughout the whole movie. The twist at the end is a doosey. Some aspects of the twist you can kind of figure out early on, but the rest of it came out of nowhere. Leonardo DiCaprio is so good and so believible, its almost terrifying. He makes his fear and his confusion and his grief palpable to the audience, and we feel everything hes going through. Hes an amazing actor who keeps getting better with every movie. Overall, a fantastic movie.

i thought it started off kind of cheesy, on a boat going to this island. then i realized it's just an attempt to authenticate the time the movie is based in. there were no high action scenes and the ending was ambiguous, but overall i think it was good. it met my expectations from the previews, but it could have had more meat to it. i want to read the book now to see if it offers more insight. guys might get bored, but to the thinkers, that enjoy a little psycological drama without lots of blood, yeah those people, they might appreciate it for what it is.

The promos do not sugesst what the movie was really about. It is a psychological thriller. We haven't had those for a long time. This movie was intense and Leo did a fantastic job! Definitely would recommend to a friend. Runs a touch slow but once you really get into it, it plays with your head and has a twist. Go see it!
